DNC Statement Commemorating “Cinco de Mayo”

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Latino Caucus Chair Iris Martinez released the following statement to commemorate Cinco de Mayo:

“During the Battle of Puebla, a small group of soldiers, outnumbered 3 to 1, defeated Napoleon’s French Foreign Legion and successfully defended Puebla, a small town in Central Mexico. Today, we celebrate this victory every year on Cinco de Mayo. Over the years, Cinco de Mayo has expanded throughout the United States, where approximately 37.2 million Hispanics are of Mexican origin and where generations of Mexican-Americans have created vibrant communities, started businesses, and grown their families. Most importantly, they have built a home.

“Cinco de Mayo’s recognition and celebration in the United States symbolizes the deep ties between our two nations and the importance of Mexican-American people throughout U.S. history and culture. Mexican-Americans have been present since the founding of our nation and enrich our country every day.

“As we celebrate this day, we also reflect on what is at stake in this year’s election. While Donald Trump spews dangerous and hateful rhetoric against the Latino community, President Biden and Vice President Harris continue to fight for Mexican-American families and the broader Latino community, from a nearly 40 percent cut in the Latino child poverty rate to kickstarting a small business boom that has led to Latino entrepreneurs starting new businesses at the fastest rate in over a decade.

“This year, we are honoring Cinco de Mayo as a critical reminder that our nation’s strength lies in our diversity, not in spite of it.”

DNC Statement on Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day

In observance of Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Native Caucus Chair Clara Pratte released the following joint statement:

“On Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day, we mourn and reflect on the countless untold stories of violence that Native communities face.

For far too long, this nation has deprived Native communities and Tribal Nations of dignity and justice, undermining the humanity of their loved ones who have gone missing or been the victims of violent crime.

“The Biden-Harris administration recognizes that Indigenous communities have been forced to investigate these horrific disappearances or murders without adequate support and resources for far too long. Under President Biden and Secretary Deb Haaland’s leadership, we have made progress to ensure that every case is met with urgency and effective action. The administration established the Missing and Murdered Unit within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which uses shared resources and databases from the DOJ while meeting frequently with Tribal, state, and county law enforcement programs to help bring Native families justice.

“Today and every day, we mourn and honor the lives of those who are missing and lost, and will continue to fight and raise awareness to ensure that Indigenous communities are safe and protected.”

Arizona Republicans Double Down on Trump’s Extreme Abortion Ban

Displaying

Following MAGA Arizona Republicans blocking a repeal of Donald Trump’s extreme 1864 abortion ban, DNC spokesperson Cameron Niven released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is the reason the lives of over a million women in Arizona are in turmoil, and MAGA Republicans in Arizona are making sure that Trump’s 160-year-old abortion ban stays in place. Again and again, Trump and the GOP are proving that the only candidates who will actually fight to safeguard women’s right to make their own health care decisions are President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.”

Arizona MAGA Republicans again blocked a repeal of Trump’s cruel 160-year-old abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or health.

NBC News: “For the second time in two weeks, Arizona Republican lawmakers rejected an attempt to repeal a near-total ban on abortion from 1864 that was upheld by the battleground state’s Supreme Court.”

Axios: “Arizona House Republicans again on Wednesday blocked an attempt to repeal the 1864 ban on nearly all abortions that was reinstated last week by the state Supreme Court.”

Trump and MAGA Republicans have already endorsed Arizona’s cruel 160-year-old abortion ban, and they have records to prove it.

Axios: “GOP suffers desert meltdown on abortion”

“A day after former President Trump thought he’d tamped down the GOP’s exposure on abortion, it popped back up in the key 2024 battleground of Arizona.

“Why it matters: Trump ushered in the end of Roe vs. Wade and its national protection of abortion rights, and now his party is suffering a massive voter backlash.

“Abortion rights have yet to lose since the end of Roe when the decision has been up to voters instead of legislators or courts. The big picture: Despite the backlash, state-level Republicans have responded to the end of Roe by pushing extremely strict restrictions on abortion, including many that effectively outlaw the practice.

“The Arizona Supreme Court, controlled by GOP-appointed justices, upheld today a 1864 law that allowed abortion only to save the life of the mother.

“Between the lines: The state court ruling creates a stark contrast in November.

“Republicans have ushered in a near-total ban.

“Democrats are pushing a state constitutional amendment for the ballot to protect abortion rights up to 24 weeks.”

Trump is still demanding credit for overturning Roe v. Wade and paving the way for extreme abortion bans across the country.

Trump: “We broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly … But they’re working, and it’s working the way it’s supposed to.”

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade. … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Claims Credit for All Abortion Bans”

Business Insider: “Trump boasts he’s ‘proud’ about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, the issue that has become ballot-box poison for Republicans”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”

Trump campaign radio ad: “And Trump nominated conservative judges, leading to Roe v. Wade being overturned.”

FWIW: “This week, we found more evidence that the Trump campaign has no interest in ‘moderating’ on the issue of abortion. On Monday, his team began running new Facebook video ads targeting voters in Iowa, referring to Trump as ‘THE MOST Pro-Life President in history.’”

Trump has said loud and clear that he’d try to ban abortion nationwide if elected to a second term, while he and his MAGA allies plan to rip away reproductive freedoms with or without Congress’ support.

Associated Press: “Trump says he will support national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide: Report”

New York Times: “Trump Privately Expresses Support for a 16-Week Abortion Ban”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Floats National Abortion Ban After Claiming He’s ‘On the Side of Women’”

Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”

Trump also backed a national abortion ban during his first term and said that women should be punished for receiving abortion care.

The Hill: “The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks … It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.”

Trump: “There has to be some form of punishment [for women who have an abortion].”

FACT: We Don’t Need To Wait Until Next Week To Know Where Donald Trump Stands on a National Abortion Ban

In response to Trump claiming that he will make a major announcement on abortion next week, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“We don’t need to wait until next week to know where Donald Trump stands on abortion – he has been peddling the same anti-choice extremism for years. In his first term, Trump backed a national abortion ban and handpicked the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade — and he’s campaigning on that now in his sad bid for a second term. If Trump gets the chance, he’s made it crystal clear that he’ll take his losing agenda of ripping away reproductive freedom even further, and that’s why voters will soundly reject him this November.”

We expect more of the same from Trump next week: anti-choice extremism and plans to ban abortion nationwide that he’s been peddling for years.

Rolling Stone“Trump Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide: Report”

New York Times: “Trump Privately Expresses Support for a 16-Week Abortion Ban”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Floats National Abortion Ban After Claiming He’s ‘On the Side of Women’”

Trump“There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”

Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all options.”

Trump: “We’ll pick something that’s going to be very, very good for pro-life … I’m going to be in there pushing.”

In case you forgot: Trump already backed a national abortion ban in his first term.

The Hill“The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. … It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.”

Trump’s MAGA allies are fully on board, pushing for a deeply unpopular plan that would allow him to ban abortion without Congress.

NOTUS“The Conservative Plan to Ban Abortion Without Congress”

“Anti-abortion advocates hope a Republican president will enforce a series of laws from the 1800s that will ‘result in the end of abortion in every single state in America.’”

“Anti-abortion activists have their eyes on a bigger prize: If former President Donald Trump wins a second term in the White House, they hope and expect that he’ll effectively ban abortions throughout the United States by prohibiting the shipment not just of abortion drugs, but any tools doctors could use to induce an abortion.

“Republican presidential candidates have been under pressure from prominent anti-abortion organizations to back a federal ban. … Enforcing the Comstock Act could make it much easier for a future GOP administration — likely Trump’s — to severely restrict abortion without lawmakers.”

“The Washington Post reported that the former president was interested in ‘Washington’s role’ in limiting abortion — meaning that anti-abortion groups’ cries may not be falling on deaf ears. … A former Trump administration official told NOTUS that when it comes to Comstock, it’s possible Trump would pledge to enforce it if it meant he’d get endorsements.”

“Project 2025, the presidential transition plan backed by many of Trump’s conservative allies and embraced by other Republicans, calls for Comstock’s enforcement. … Among the actions that the project considers a priority during this period, Chretien said, is enforcing Comstock.”

USA Today“Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.”

Axios: “Most Americans support abortion access one year after Roe v. Wade: poll”

CNN: “A 64% majority of US adults say they disapprove of last year’s Supreme Court ruling that women do not have a constitutional right to an abortion, with half strongly disapproving – an assessment that’s almost entirely unchanged from CNN’s poll last July in the immediate wake of the decision.”

Your Guide to an RNC Job Interview

Donald Trump’s handpicked RNC leadership team has made election denial a litmus test for getting hired – so if you are one of the lucky losers interviewing for a job at the RNC, (a) why are you doing this to yourself and (b) here are some questions to be ready to answer:

1. Was the 2020 election stolen, or will you admit that Donald Trump lost to President Biden by over 7 million votes in 2020?

2. Are violent January 6 rioters “hostages” and “patriots?”

3. Do you think January 6 was “a beautiful day,” and should those who committed violence should be pardoned?

4. Do you support Trump’s threat of a “bloodbath” if he loses this November?

5.  Do you believe in democracy or do you want Trump to be a dictator on “day one” as he calls for terminating the Constitution?

6.  Do you agree with Donald Trump that Nikki Haley supporters are “RINOs,” “never Trumpers,” and “communists” who should be “permanently barred” from the Republican Party?

7. Do you like raising money, or do you want to help keep up the RNC’s disastrous fundraising streak?

If your answers can satisfy MAGA extremist election deniers Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, welcome! You can be part of Trump’s team that gets smoked once again this November.

Trump’s Crooks, Cranks, and Convicts: Trump Wants Convicted Fraudster Paul Manafort Running GOP Convention

This week, we’re highlighting some of the crooks, cranks, and convicts that make up Donald Trump’s MAGA GOP. As Trump reportedly considers bringing Paul Manafort back to help his campaign, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump can’t find anyone better to help run a multimillion dollar convention than convicted felon and fraudster Paul Manafort. His qualifications to join Trump’s supporting cast include bipartisan condemnation as a ‘grave counterintelligence threat’ and a rap sheet filled with bank and tax fraud. But given the track record of the rest of Trump’s inner circle of election deniers, conspiracy theorists, and absolute weirdos, we can’t think of anyone better to help run Trump’s clown show of a convention than Manafort.”

Despite Paul Manafort’s multiple convictions for fraud, Donald Trump is “determined” to bring him back to help his campaign.

New York Times: “Paul Manafort, a top adviser to Donald J. Trump’s 2016 campaign who was pardoned by the former president at the end of his White House term, is in discussions to return to help with the Republican National Convention.”

“Mr. Manafort was found guilty in late August 2018 of a range of financial crimes, including tax and bank fraud.

“In September 2018, Mr. Manafort pleaded guilty to additional charges brought by Mr. Mueller and agreed to cooperate. But as the case proceeded, Mr. Mueller said that Mr. Manafort had not been truthful in his cooperation, breaching that plea deal.”

Washington Post: “Former president Donald Trump is expected to enlist Paul Manafort, the former campaign manager he pardoned, as a campaign adviser later this year, according to four people familiar with the talks.

“The job discussions have largely centered around the 2024 Republican convention in Milwaukee in July and could include Manafort playing a role in fundraising for the presumptive GOP nominee’s campaign, according to these people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private deliberations. While no formal decision has been made, the four people described the hiring as expected and said Trump was determined to bring Manafort back into the fold.”

Washington Post: “Former president Donald Trump is preparing to bring back into his campaign fold a man convicted of multiple crimes and whom a bipartisan Senate report labeled a ‘grave counterintelligence threat’ because of his ties to a Russian spy.”

The Independent: “Trump ‘may recruit Paul Manafort to 2024 campaign’ – despite jail time and alleged ties to Russian spies”

Trump can’t stop surrounding himself with election deniers, conspiracy theorists, and convicted felons.

Axios: “Trump eyes convicts and conspiracists for 2024 reunion”

“Sidelined characters from former President Trump’s past campaigns — ‘crazies,’ some of his top advisers call them — are reattaching themselves to his inner circle now that he’s locked up the Republican nomination. … ex-advisers, conspiracy theorists and convicted felons are now knocking on the campaign’s door — and some are getting in.”

The Guardian: “Headache for campaign team as Trump gets the band back together”

New York Times: “Former President Donald J. Trump recently told aides to hire Laura Loomer, a far-right and anti-Muslim activist with a history of expressing bigoted views, for a campaign role, according to four people familiar with the plans. Mr. Trump met with Ms. Loomer recently and directed advisers to give her a role in support of his candidacy.”

Rolling Stone: “They Helped Trump Plan a Coup. He Wants Them Back for a Second Term”

The Hill: “Trump says he’ll bring back Michael Flynn if he wins in 2024: ‘He’s some man’”

CNN: “Trump hosted Holocaust denier at Mar-a-Lago estate during visit with Kanye West, a week after announcing 2024 run”

DNC Statement on Ronna McDaniel’s New Position at NBC After Years of Attacking the Free Press and Our Democracy

In response to former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel’s new role at NBC, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:

“The free and independent press is fundamental to our democracy, and has and continues to face unprecedented attacks by Donald Trump and his lackeys – including Ronna McDaniel – to chip away at its credibility and allow space for MAGA lies and deceit.

“All of us – the independent press included – have a duty to stop them.

“Lying about the 2020 election results culminated in Donald Trump encouraging his supporters to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Allowing one of the key architects of that shameful period in our country the platform to whitewash her role in what happened, and then provide ongoing ‘commentary’ about American politics, does a disservice to the journalists who put themselves in harm’s way to cover the violence and brutality at the Capitol so the American people knew the facts.

“There should be no debate about the truth in our political discourse. Ronna McDaniel is a proven liar, and has no place in an honest and objective conversation about the future of this country.”

Trump’s VP Litmus Test: Election Denialism

In response to Donald Trump’s vice presidential contenders trying to out-MAGA each other with election denialism, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has a clear litmus test for any potential running mates: total loyalty to Trump above democracy and the Constitution. To win Trump’s veepstakes, candidates have to embrace his denial of the 2020 election results, cast doubt on this November’s results, and refuse to certify future elections – and his VP contenders have been more than happy to do so. Trump tried to reject the will of the voters in 2020 after he got crushed and lost to President Biden by more than 7 million votes. Now, it’s clear that both Trump and whatever MAGA extremist he picks for VP will only double down on his baseless claims and continue to put our democracy on the line in this election.”

NEW: Byron Donalds became the latest VP contender to refuse to commit to certifying election results.

Axios: “Byron Donalds wouldn’t commit to certifying election results as Trump’s VP”

“Trump and his allies will want a VP pick that is more willing to comply with the former president’s wishes, which former Vice President Pence rejected by certifying the 2020 results. ‘If you have state officials who are violating the election law in their states … then no, I would not,’ Donalds said when asked if he would certify the 2028 results as vice president.”

Trump’s veepstakes competition is a race to the bottom to see who can embrace his extreme and dangerous election denialism.

CNN: “Sen. Tim Scott declines to say whether he would’ve certified 2020 election results if he were vice president”

Associated Press: “Trump VP contender Tim Scott doesn’t want to talk about vice president’s role in certifying election”

Associated Press: “Noem refuses to say whether Biden victory was free and fair”

Politico: “Stefanik pre-emptively declines to commit to accepting 2024 election results”

Rolling Stone: “Elise Stefanik Auditions for VP: ‘I Would Not Have Done What Mike Pence Did’”

Kaitlan Collins, CNN: “North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, who Trump said yesterday would do ‘a great job’ as VP, does not answer when I asked if he thought Mike Pence did the right thing on Jan. 6.”

Neil Cavuto, Fox News: “Would you have done what Mike Pence did [to certify the 2020 election results on January 6]?”

Ben Carson: “Mike Pence spent a lot of time laboring over that. … I think it would’ve been appropriate perhaps to look at all of the alternatives very seriously because there was significant controversy about what had happened in the election.”

Cavuto: “You believe what Mike Pence did, ultimately the decision he made ultimately, was right or not?”

Carson: “Well, I believe he tried to do what was right. … I think the right thing would have been to try to focus on having a process that is legitimate.”

ABC News: “JD Vance says he’s wouldn’t have certified 2020 race until states submitted pro-Trump electors”

Scarborough: This Guy is a Trumper Who Knew Trump Would Love It

The special counsel’s “extremely gratuitous, unnecessary … political pot-shot” against the president is being widely condemned. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Congressman Dan Goldman blasted the “bad faith” political cheap shots in the special counsel’s report that concluded that President Biden and his team did the right thing – something that can’t be said about Donald Trump.

Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”

Scarborough: “It certainly seemed like a politically charged document. … He didn’t have any evidence. … The one thing that he did right, he talked about the distinctions between Donald Trump.”

Scarborough: “Do you think  … [the special counsel] didn’t know, by putting words in, that Donald Trump would love for him to put in there? … He’s a Trumper who knew.”

Scarborough: “A neurologist from Trump university … so bizarre. … People immediately heard these random conclusions, irrelevant conclusions, politically charged, Trump-like ramblings. [They wondered] why in the world would he put that in the report?”

Mediaite: “Morning Joe Crew LIVID With ‘Garbage’ Special Counsel Report from ‘Trumper’ Robert Hur”

Representative Dan Goldman on CNN’s “CNN This Morning”

Rep. Goldman: “This was extremely gratuitous, unnecessary, and it was just a political pot-shot in the middle of an election year. … This [Special Counsel] who was appointed by Donald Trump wanted to make sure that he got his licks in.”

Rep. Goldman: “[Hur] wanted to deflect from his ultimate decision and I think that’s why this report is misguided both in its conclusion and its excessive editorializing.”

Rep. Goldman: “I spoke to him on October 7 when I was in Israel a couple hours after the Hamas attack and that was the day before this interview began and he demonstrated an unbelievable mastery of this entire region. He had already reached out to a number of different leaders. He understood all of the vortexes and all of the issues and tension points. This is someone whose age has a tremendous benefit and his experience and his understanding and his knowledge of foreign policy going back many many years and that has been to our benefit in Ukraine.”
