MAGA in the States: Chaos, Infighting, and Extremism

It’s no surprise that the party led by the same guy who said there would be a “bloodbath” if he loses the election again is embroiled in chaos, extremism, disarray, and internal chaos. Totally out of touch with the American people, Trump and MAGA Republicans across the country continue to show voters that they’re utterly unfit to lead.

Take a look at the latest:

Just like the Trump operation itself, Republican state parties in critical states are sputtering and struggling for cash.

NOTUS: Republicans Can’t Afford to Help Trump Out With His Huge Bond

“Don’t expect the Republican Party to step in just yet to help former President Donald Trump out with his financial woes: They’ve got too many problems of their own.”

“But the party can only afford to spare so much. Michigan’s GOP, which is dealing with tough fundraising, a high burn rate and internal leadership squabbles, is emblematic of a difficult, cash-strapped GOP landscape.

“The Arizona, Minnesota, Colorado, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Florida state parties have all reportedly been struggling financially. Georgia’s state party is so busy paying off its own legal bills that it’s left Gov. Brian Kemp to pick up the slack. The state Republican parties did not return NOTUS’ request for comment.”

“And that’s just the state parties. Last year was the RNC’s worst fundraising year since a decade prior, bringing in about $87 million in 2023. They started 2024 with just over $8 million cash on hand. Trump’s campaign has seen both small-donor fatigue, a critical base for him financially, and major donor hesitation.

Meanwhile, Democrats have been raking in cash. The Democratic National Committee started the year with $21 million cash on hand and brought in just under $120 million in 2023.”

MAGA Republicans know their agenda is too extreme to have anything to show for it – so they’re jumping through hoops to take credit for the accomplishments that President Biden and Democrats are delivering for the American people.

Business InsiderLauren Boebert brags about securing $20 million in funding that she voted against: ‘Can’t wait for the ribbon cuttings’

“Earlier this month, Rep. Lauren Boebert voted against a must-pass government funding bill that contained more than $20 million for the Colorado district she’s now abandoning.”

“On Monday night, she celebrated the impending arrival of that funding anyway.”

“‘Can’t wait for the ribbon cuttings and to see these priorities come to fruition,’ the congresswoman said in a release, listing 10 different projects across the state’s 3rd congressional district that are set to benefit from an influx of federal dollars.”

“Boebert was among 40 House Republicans who voted on March 6 against the so-called “minibus” — which funds vast swaths of the federal government — despite having secured federal funding for their districts.”

New Republic: MTG Dragged for Bragging About Bill She Actually Voted Against

“Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is celebrating the fact that her district received federal funds for infrastructure improvements—and conveniently ignoring the fact that she voted against the budget bill that made it all possible.”

MAGA Republicans continue to push archaic, sexist, and racist platforms as Trump leads the charge to drag our country backward.

HuffPost: Mark Robinson’s Bizarre Ramble: ‘I Absolutely Want To Go Back To The America Where Women Couldn’t Vote’

“On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson won the GOP primary to become his party’s nominee for North Carolina governor, presumably with the help of female voters.”

“But just four years ago, Robinson invoked a bizarre hypothetical in which he said he’d ‘absolutely’ like to return to the days when the 19th Amendment didn’t exist ― when women didn’t have the right to vote.

“‘I absolutely want to go back to the America where women couldn’t vote,’ Robinson said in a newly resurfaced video of his remarks at a March 2020 event hosted by the Republican Women of Pitt County.”

“During this event, Robinson, who was running for lieutenant governor at the time, recalled someone recently asking conservative activist Candace Owens to pick which version of America would make America ‘great again,’ one where ‘Black people were swinging from cheap trees’ or one where women weren’t allowed to vote.”

“Robinson said he would definitely return to the days in America when women were denied the right to vote ‘because in those days we had people who fought for real social change, and they were called Republicans.’”

The Washington Post: N.C. GOP nominee compared Planned Parenthood, men with saggy pants to KKK

“Planned Parenthood. Men with saggy pants. People who tore down Confederate flags and monuments. The Rev. Al Sharpton.”

Mark Robinson, the GOP nominee in one of this year’s most competitive governor’s races, has declared them all comparable to or worse than the Ku Klux Klan in social media posts that have drawn little attention. The posts are part of a long record of comments ranging from provocative to bigoted that are getting more scrutiny as the campaign heats up in North Carolina — and that some Republicans worry will be a liability in a battleground state.”

Robinson’s references to the KKK, a white-supremacist group that has terrorized Black Americans, underscore the risks Republicans have taken in nominating him — a longtime factory worker who posted a wide range of insults on Facebook before he became a viral hit on the right with a speech about gun laws in 2018. He was elected lieutenant governor of North Carolina in 2020 and won the gubernatorial primary by landslide this month with former president Donald Trump’s endorsement. At a rally, Trump praised Robinson as ‘Martin Luther King on steroids.’”

MAGA in the States: Chaos, Infighting, and Extremism

There are so many MAGA Republicans across the country stumbling over their own extremism, disorganization, and internal chaos under Donald Trump’s thumb that it might be hard to keep track. So we’ll do it for you. We want to make sure you’re up to date so we’re launching this new series for updates spotlighting the latest GOP disarray from coast to coast.

Take a look:

The moment Trump took over the RNC, they killed their shallow attempt to reach communities of color in key battleground states. Still bleeding financially, the RNC has finally come to terms with the fact that no amount of “community centers” will make up for how disrespectful and disastrous Trump is for Black and Brown Americans.

Daily Beast: “In January, The Messenger reported that the RNC had already shuttered most of the nearly two dozen Hispanic Community Centers that served as the base for the program, leaving just five open.”

“But two people with knowledge of the plans told The Daily Beast that the RNC has decided to scrap that effort. Instead, the people said, the community center program now appears to be another casualty of the RNC’s recent restructuring—a bloodbath that has already claimed several dozen jobs, including senior leadership posts, along with the apparent decimation of field operations and other strategic realignments that could come at the cost of Republican candidates across the country not fortunate enough to be named Trump.

“Instead of going after minority voters, the RNC apparently plans to remake itself even more in Trump’s image.”

Infighting has gotten so bad in Arizona that Republicans are actually fighting. A “key Trump ally” and former chair of the Arizona Republican Party who tried to help the failed former president undermine the will of the people by attempting to overturn the election has been accused of physically assaulting a fellow Republican during their own party meeting.

Arizona Mirror: “A fellow Republican accused former Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman Kelli Ward of assault during the state party’s January meeting at a Phoenix church. … Ward is also facing possible prosecution for her role as a fake elector in the 2020 election.”

Rolling Stone: “Arizona’s criminal probe into the 2020 fake electors plot is heating up and investigators are now asking plenty of questions about a key Donald Trump ally involved in it: former state GOP chair Kelli Ward.”

“The sources add that Ward — once one of the state’s most prominent Republicans — and her potential contacts and private activities following Election Day 2020 have been of particular interest to investigators as of late. One of these sources describes Arizona investigators as ‘moving aggressively’ on this stage of the inquiry into the state’s pro-Trump fake electors, which included Ward, a Trump hardliner and then-chair of the Arizona Republican Party.”

Like President Biden emphasized during his State of the Union address: Political violence has no place in America. But Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans, including members of the Kansas GOP this week, continue to actively encourage physical assault instead of discourse.

Kansas City Star: “When the fundraiser took place Friday night, the headline turned out to be a mannequin of President Joe Biden that attendees could punch, kick and otherwise beat up on.”

“But the Biden effigy – and the event itself – underscores how the Johnson County Republican Party has been reshaped over the past eight years under former President Donald Trump and his brand of insult politicking.”

“The behavior on display at the Johnson County Republican Party fundraiser has its roots in Trump, Kessinger argued, saying the former president has made ‘that sort of behavior acceptable and desired.’”

In Nevada, Trump has continued to embrace people who supported overturning the 2020 election and advocated for political violence. This week, he endorsed a fake elector who has been indicted for trying to steal the 2020 election for Trump, as well as an RNC candidate who called for the current attorney general’s “hanging.”

Raw Story: “Former President Donald Trump endorsed an explosive figure in Nevada politics for re-appointment to her position representing the state GOP in the Republican National Committee on Tuesday.”

“Her [2022 state attorney general] campaign was derailed by scandal after leaked messages of her appearing to endorse the hanging of [incumbent Attorney General Aaron] Ford, who is Black. ‘This guy should be hanging from a [expletive] crane,’ she wrote to a friend, who later leaked the message to sabotage her campaign.”

Jon Ralston, Nevada Independent: “Alternate hed: Indicted guy endorses indicted guy (DeGraffenreid was a fake elector) and unhinged conspiracy theorist endorses unhinged conspiracy theorist (Chattah puts out crazy stuff here and once said a Black AG should be ‘hanging from a f’ing crane.’)
Not sending their best.”

IN THE STATES: President Biden’s Unifying Vision Drives Stark Contrast Against Trump’s Vision of Revenge and Retribution

During his State of the Union address, President Biden spoke directly to the American people about his work driving the greatest comeback in the world and the inflection point we’re now at. Millions of people across our country saw that the choice they have this November is between an America where everyone gets a fair shot and our freedoms and democracy are protected or Donald Trump’s self-serving, hate-fueled America with less freedoms and more division.

DNC Files FEC Complaint Against Super PAC American Values 2024 for Unprecedented Loan Agreement

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) today filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that a pro-Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Super PAC, American Values 2024 (AV24), has failed to properly disclose $10 million in loans from, and $9.65 million in loan repayments to, Gavin de Becker in violation of federal law. Additionally, AV24 hasn’t disclosed whether it has other “off the books” loan agreements with donors.

“This is yet another example of AV24 playing fast and loose with election law,” DNC senior adviser Mary Beth Cahill said. “It’s clear that they, along with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his campaign, don’t believe that the rules apply to them.”

“This unprecedented loan arrangement has allowed them to not only inflate their fundraising numbers, but also to conceal the extent to which AV24 is almost single-handedly funded by Tim Mellon, Donald Trump’s largest donor this cycle.”

To read the complaint, click here.

Summary of the violation:

  • Gavin de Becker has given $10 million to AV24 to date- $9.65 million of which has been refunded. This amounted to one-third of AV24’s receipts and more than two-thirds of its disbursements in 2023.
  • This funding allowed AV24 to mislead the public about its finances, falsely suggesting that it has more support than it really does.
  • AV24 published at least two press releases about its fundraising totals in 2023 — one of which included a quote from de Becker – neither of which revealed that his funding was a loan and that it would be returned to him later in the year.
  • These contributions not only inflated AV24’s fundraising totals, but they also obfuscated how much AV24 is funded by Timothy Mellon- Donald Trump’s largest financial backer this cycle.
  • Mellon has given AV24 a total of $20 million- funding that will go to the Super PAC’s efforts to get RFK Jr. on the ballot. When combined, Mellon’s contributions and de Becker’s loans constituted nearly 80% of AV24’s fundraising receipts.
  • AV24 and de Becker have publicly characterized these transactions as “bridge funding,” but semantic creativity does not change the substance of these transactions. Mr. de Becker extended funds to AV24 with an agreement that they could be repaid later under terms that AV24 has yet to disclose. Over the following months, the PAC has apparently repaid him consistent with that agreement.
  • The law allows Super PACs to accept loans but requires that they be disclosed as such, including the identity of the lender and terms of the loan, including the origination date; the date the loan is due or the amortization schedule; and the rate of interest charged, if any.
  • The law also requires committees to identify any endorser or guarantor, and the amount of the endorsement or guarantee. This allows voters to see the true source and nature of the funds raised by political committees active in federal elections.
  • This complaint asks the FEC to take the actions necessary to correct these violations.

DNC Statement on Bloody Sunday

On the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:

“59 years ago, over 600 activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in opposition of Jim Crow laws and in search of a more fair and just world. Led by giants of the Civil Rights Movement like John Lewis, their peaceful protest was met with a bombardment of violent attacks by Alabama State Troopers.

“Yet, when met face-to-face with evil and bigotry, they stood tall, stood strong, and kept marching. They marched for their ancestors who grew up in the fight for freedom, they marched so their children could thrive in a land of opportunity, and they marched for a better and brighter future for our country.

“The activists on Bloody Sunday paved the way for voting rights legislation that for so long was the foundation of our democracy – that is, until those protections were gutted by the Supreme Court. Today, we find ourselves carrying forward the fight for civil rights and as we’re asked to follow in the footsteps of the activists who came before us, we must answer the call and become a new generation of leaders.

“In order to face the battles ahead of us, we must be our own inspiration and once again stir up some ‘good trouble.’

“59 years ago, John Lewis stood on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, looked hatred in the eyes, and decided to spend the rest of his life in the battle for love, justice, and peace. While Republicans refuse to pass the voting rights legislation that bears his name and work to enact anti-voting laws across the country, we must honor his fight and keep marching for a future that we can all be proud of.”

DNC Creates Dynamic NFT to Highlight How RFK Jr. Is Not What He Seems

RFK Jr. Propped Up by MAGA Figures, Funded by Trump’s Largest Donor Timothy Mellon

Today, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) created and made available a dynamic NFT to attendees at ETHDenver — a Web3 innovation festival — that featured a keynote address from Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The DNC-created NFT, which was available to be minted for a limited time today, initially appears as a shiny commemorative token. Later, during RFK Jr.’s remarks, it will be unmasked to reveal Kennedy with Donald Trump over his shoulder to highlight how Kennedy’s candidacy is primarily funded by Timothy Mellon — Trump’s largest donor this cycle who has also contributed $20 million to American Values 2024, the pro-Kennedy Super PAC.

You can view the NFT here.

“It’s critical that the American people know that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is not what he seems in this race,” DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd said. “His candidacy is being propped up by megadonor Timothy Mellon, who is also Donald Trump’s largest contributor this cycle. RFK Jr.  is nothing more than a stalking horse to help Trump return to the White House.”

Mellon is the largest donor this cycle to Super PACs supporting both Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy Jr.

Newsweek: “Timothy Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking fortune, donated $5 million to the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. fundraising attempts in January, as well $5 million to a Super PAC supporting the Democrat-turned-independent’s presidential bid the same month, Federal Election Commission (FEC) listings reveal…Mellon gave American Values a total of $15 million in 2023, according to FEC filings, covering a period when Kennedy Jr. ran as a Democratic and independent presidential candidate. The billionaire was also found to have donated $10 million to the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. in the second half of last year, making him the largest contributor to both Super PACs.”

Mellon was helping to “keep the lights on for the Kennedy campaign” and “was first inclined to give $5 million to R.F.K. because he thought he was a kooky Biden-botherer in the Democratic primary.”

Washington Examiner: “So, who are the faces helping to keep the lights on for the Kennedy campaign? Well, one is Timothy Mellon, a Republican megadonor and ex-chairman of the transportation-holding corporation Pan Am Systems. Mellon, the grandson of banking tycoon Andrew Mellon, gave $5 million in April to American Values 2024, a super PAC supporting Kennedy, campaign finance disclosures show.”

Puck: “Mellon, I’ve been told, is fascinated by presidential politics and was first inclined to give $5 million to R.F.K. because he thought he was a kooky Biden-botherer in the Democratic primary.”

Mellon is also Trump’s biggest donor in the 2024 presidential campaign cycle.

New York Times: “Timothy Mellon, the banking heir and businessman, gave an additional $5 million in January to a super PAC backing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign, bringing his total contribution to $20 million. Mellon has also given $15 million to a super PAC, MAGA Inc., that is backing Donald Trump.”

Politico: “The biggest donation by far [to a pro-Trump super PAC] came from Timothy Mellon, a transportation executive and heir to the Mellon banking fortune, who wrote a $10 million check.”

NBC News: “Mellon, who is listed on the report as a self-employed investor, has contributed millions to Republican candidates and causes in the past, including a whopping $20 million to super PACs supporting former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid in 2020.”

RFK Jr. has deflected questions on why Mellon, a Trump megadonor with a record of racist statements, has backed his candidacy.

Meryl Kornfield, Washington Post: “I just asked RFK how he feels about Mellon’s support of Trump and views, specifically how he once wrote about Black people.”

Meet Michael Whatley: A Trump-Backed, Election-Denying MAGA Extremist Who Wants To Rip Away Americans’ Basic Freedoms (And Also Can’t Denounce Nazis)

As Donald Trump campaigns in future RNC Chair Michael Whatley’s home state of North Carolina, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump hand picked Michael Whatley to lead the RNC not in spite of his record as an election-denying MAGA extremist – but because of it. Whatley earned his promotion with Trump with a resume of pushing to rip away women’s basic freedoms – including access to IVF – and refusing to condemn Nazis and white supremacists. Whatley is being rewarded for completely embracing Trump’s far-right anti-freedom agenda because extremism and hatred are the qualities Trump is looking for in an apprentice.”

Michael Whatley is a dangerous MAGA extremist who has been endorsed by Donald Trump to take over the RNC.

New York Magazine“Trump Taps Election Deniers Lara Trump, Michael Whatley to Lead RNC”

Associated Press: “In pushing Michael Whatley as the next leader of the Republican National Committee, Donald Trump zeroed in on the North Carolina GOP chairman’s dedication to ‘election integrity,’ baselessly suggesting he would ensure the 2024 race ‘can’t be stolen.’”

Associated Press“Donald Trump wants a leadership change at the Republican National Committee in an attempt to install a new slate of loyalists — including his daughter-in-law — atop the GOP’s political machine even before the former president formally secures the party’s next presidential nomination.”

Politico: “Several senior Republican officials are concerned that Donald Trump’s expected takeover of the RNC will ultimately pave the way for the committee to once again cover his legal bills.”

Whatley is an election denier who parroted Trump’s baseless lies about the 2020 election.

New York Times“Mr. Trump likes Mr. Whatley for one overwhelming reason, according to people who have discussed him with the former president: He is ‘a stop the steal guy,’ as one of the people described him. He endorses Mr. Trump’s false claims about mass voter fraud… Mr. Whatley has baselessly claimed that election security efforts from Republicans in North Carolina stopped Democrats from cheating.”

CNN“Likely frontrunner for RNC chair parroted Trump’s 2020 election lies”

“Michael Whatley, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, shared false claims that Republican observers were prevented from accessing polling locations and repeatedly said Democratic cities in swing states were engaged in ‘massive fraud.’”

“His elevation to RNC chair could give Trump a loyalist more willing to devote resources to pursue future voter fraud claims in court should they arise.”

“‘Regardless of how these lawsuits come out around the country with the presidential race we do know that there was massive fraud that took place,’ Whatley said in one late November 2020 interview on local North Carolina radio. ‘We know that it took place in places like Milwaukee and Detroit and Philadelphia.’”

Raleigh News & Observer“Whatley has frequently repeated Trump’s false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.”

Vice: “North Carolina Republican chair Michael Whatley falsely claimed in February that ‘we certainly saw evidence of voting irregularities, of election counting irregularities in a number of places around the country,’ and invented the claim that the reason Trump won North Carolina was his state party’s vigilance against Democrats’ attempts to cheat.”

Whatley has also embraced Trump’s lies about January 6, saying that neither Trump nor extreme Republicans were responsible for the riot.

NPR: “Does the president bear any responsibility for lying to them for months about the results of the election, including on the day of the riot?”

Whatley: “Well, I think the president certainly felt and still feels that there was massive voter irregularities across the country.”

Whatley is an anti-abortion extremist who celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade and called North Carolina Republicans’ extreme abortion ban “responsible” and “mainstream.”

Raleigh News & Observer: “Michael Whatley, chairman of the N.C. GOP, said he was proud of activism on the part of the anti-abortion movement” [after Roe v. Wade was overturned]

Whatley on North Carolina’s extreme abortion ban: “Well I think it’s a responsible bill, I think that this is a legislative package that is well within the mainstream of North Carolina political thought, it’s going to be supported, these are positions that are widely supported across the state.”

Whatley has also consistently supported a MAGA platform that could rip away access to IVF – similar to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that Trump made possible.

Popular Information: “Trump’s pick for chair of the Republican Party opposes ‘the destruction of human embryos’”

“Under [Whatley’s] leadership, the North Carolina Republican Party has consistently opposed scientific procedures that involve discarding human embryos, saying such actions violate ‘the sanctity of all human life.’ The most recent version of the North Carolina Republican Party Platform, approved in 2022, states that ‘[u]nborn children have constitutional rights to life and liberty and, the government must respect and protect all innocent human life from conception to natural death.’ Specifically, the party opposes ‘the destruction of human embryos.’ A previous version of the platform under Whatley, approved by the North Carolina Republican Party in 2020, contains identical language. … The position of the North Carolina GOP under Whatley on embryos mirrors a recent decision by the Alabama Supreme Court.”

Whatley is in line with Trump’s efforts to rip away health care – he has railed against the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion.

Whatley: “That is going to have to be a process that’s going to go through the House, going to go through the Senate because there’s a lot of legislative fixes that you’re going to need in there for Obamacare.”

Whatley after North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper vetoed a budget that lacked Medicaid expansion: “Governor Cooper has chosen to hold NC hostage by vetoing a strong bipartisan budget bill which would help students, teachers and law enforcement in order to try to expand socialized healthcare.”

2019Whatley criticized Governor Cooper for pushing Medicaid expansion.

Whatley has praised Trump’s failed MAGAnomics agenda that included the worst jobs record since the Great Depression, a disastrous trade deal with China, and a tax scam that rigged the economy for the ultra-wealthy at the expense of America’s middle class.

Whatley: “[Trump] built the strongest economy in U.S. history by enacting historic tax cuts, dramatically cutting red tape, and bringing manufacturing back to America. … He has put America First by standing up to China and negotiating treaties, like the USMCA and Phase 1 China Trade Deal, which treat American farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses fairly.”

Whatley is refusing to condemn a state House GOP candidate with ties to a neo-Nazi organization.

Raleigh News & Observer“NC GOP chair stays quiet about candidate’s Nazi ties after failed effort at removal from ballot”

“This year, however, the state GOP, led by Chair Michael Whatley, has remained silent on a candidate with ties to a neo-Nazi organization.

“Joseph Gibson III, a Rockingham County podcaster with past felony convictions, is running for a state House seat. … After Gibson was approved to be on the ballot, Whatley — who is now running to be chair of the Republican National Committee with former President Donald Trump’s support — did not publicly condemn his candidacy.

“The Anti-Defamation League found that Gibson had ties to the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement and referred to him as a ‘white supremacist and anti-government extremist.’

“The ADL’s report said Gibson participated in livestream events hosted by the NSM and in one instance messaged the channel saying ‘88,’ a dog whistle used by white supremacists to mean ‘Heil Hitler.’”

Donald Trump and His MAGA Ally Mark Robinson Will Put An Extreme and Dangerous Agenda On the Ballot in North Carolina This November

As Donald Trump campaigns in North Carolina today, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and his MAGA ally Mark Robinson are peddling a dangerous and divisive agenda to North Carolinians, but the voters aren’t buying it. Trump and Robinson are both MAGA extremists who are running on the same unpopular platform of outlawing abortion, threatening our democracy, and attacking public schools and teachers. Voters in North Carolina understand what’s at stake up and down the ballot, and they know both Trump and Robinson are too extreme for the Tar Heel State.”

Trump has teamed up with anti-abortion extremist Mark Robinson, who has said a pregnant woman’s body isn’t hers anymore, likened abortion to murder, railed against exceptions for rape or incest, and threw his support behind a six-week abortion ban.

Cardinal & Pine“Robinson is on the record calling abortion ‘murder,’ and has asserted that once a woman is pregnant ‘it’s not [her] body anymore.’ When the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade last year, Robinson said in a statement that he was ‘overjoyed’ by the decision and that he had been ‘praying’ for such a thing to happen.”

Fox 8: “[Robinson said] that if he had the authority, abortion would be completely illegal in the state … ‘If I had all the power right now, say I was the governor and had a willing legislature, we could pass a bill right now that says you can’t get an abortion in North Carolina for any reason. … I’d love to pass a law. I’d love to see a heartbeat bill proposed in our legislature.’”

CBS 17: “Robinson: ‘Next goal’ is to restrict abortion at six weeks in NC”

WRAL: “At one point during Friday’s speech, a precursor to the main address former President Donald Trump would give the convention Saturday, the lieutenant governor explained why he rejects all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. ‘What about in cases of rape or incest?’ Robinson said, changing his voice to impersonate an abortion rights advocate. ‘It reminds me of the argument about seatbelts,’ Robinson said.”

Robinson has peddled Trump’s baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

The News & Observer: “‘Yeah, I said that.’ Mark Robinson embraced Trump’s false claims on 2020 election”

“[Trump] continues to push false claims about the election, and an audio recording obtained by The News & Observer shows Robinson has embraced those claims. Robinson, who has endorsed Trump, said in a speech at a church in 2021 that Biden ‘stole the election,’ the recording shows.”

While Trump continues his pursuit of repealing the Affordable Care Act, Mark Robinson has railed against giving hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians access to health care by expanding Medicaid.

The News & Observer: “Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the presumed frontrunner for the GOP nomination for governor in 2024, has said he doesn’t think the state should expand Medicaid. In September 2022, Robinson told Business NC that he wasn’t in favor of expansion and hoped the effort to expand Medicaid failed, because he didn’t want health care in the state ‘to be turned over to the federal government.’”

Robinson has attacked North Carolina’s public schools and teachers and is calling to strip science and social studies classes from elementary schools.

Robinson: “The way to do this is to demand proficiency in reading, writing, and math in grades one through five. In those grades, we don’t need to be teaching social studies. We don’t need to be teaching science. We surely don’t need to be talking about equity and social justice. I’ll say it again: we need to be teaching kids how to read, how to write, and how to do mathematics. If I were totally in charge of education, that’s the course I would set in North Carolina.””

Robinson has called public school teachers “wicked people” and “so-called people” who are “wrong headed” and urged parents not to send their children to North Carolina’s public schools.

Robinson continues to put the gun lobby over the safety of our children and even publicly berated mass shooting survivors.

The Charlotte Observer Editorial Board: “As mass shootings continue unabated, NC Lt. Gov. Robinson cozies up to gun lobby”

CNN: “North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the current Republican favorite to be the party’s nominee for governor in 2024, has a long history of remarks viciously mocking and attacking teenage survivors of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, for their advocacy for gun control measures. In posts after the shooting, Robinson called the students ‘spoiled, angry, know it all CHILDREN,’ ‘spoiled little bastards,’ and ‘media prosti-tots.’ Robinson, whose political rise as a conservative Internet personality started when a clip of him speaking at a city council meeting in April 2018 went viral, as he was speaking against a proposal to cancel a local gun show after the Parkland shooting. He also began attacking the Parkland survivors after they launched the ‘March for Our Lives’ movement that called for new gun control measures, comparing the students to communists.”

The News & Observer“North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson delivered a fiery defense of gun ownership at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Houston, vowing to continue fighting against supporters of stricter gun laws who he said want to disarm all Americans… The NRA’s decision to move ahead with the three-day annual gathering as planned has come under intense scrutiny this week after a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday left 19 children and two teachers dead.”

Like Trump, Robinson also has a long and shameful history of spewing hate.

WRAL“Robinson said this Sunday during a church service outside Charlotte that God created him specifically to fight against the push for LGBTQ rights and visibility, which he says is turning America into a ‘hellhole.’ ‘I was not crafted to be Mr. Nicey-Nice,’ Robinson said. ‘… God formed me because he knew there was going to be a time when God’s learning was going to be intolerable to the wicked. When children were going to be dragged down to go see the drag show. When pornography was going to be presented to our children in schools.’  Later on, he also slammed Christian churches that are accepting toward gay and lesbian people.  ‘Makes me sick every time I see it — a church that flies that Rainbow flag, which is a direct spit in the face of God almighty,’ he said.”

Talking Points Memo“In particular, the Black community has been a major target for Robinson. In various posts over the years he referred to Black people as ‘muddle headed negroes,’ ‘apes,’ and ‘a monkey.’ ‘February is Black History Month. I guess the shortest month of the year is all we need to learn about the separate but equal history of a people who have achieved so little,’ Robinson wrote in 2014.”

Jewish Insider: “Last fall, Raleigh’s News & Observer unearthed an interview in which Robinson spoke with a fringe pastor, Sean Moon, who claimed that the modern incarnation of the four horsemen of the apocalypse includes China, the CIA, Islam and the Rothschild family of ‘international bankers that rule every single national or federal reserve-type style of central bank in every single country.’ Rather than objecting to the blatantly antisemitic conspiracy theory, Robinson grunted along in agreement. ‘That’s exactly right,’ he said.”

ICYMI: Rep. McClellan, Reproductive Care Advocates Slam Trump Ahead of Rally in Richmond

Today, the DNC hosted a press conference with Biden-Harris National Advisory Board member Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) and reproductive care advocates to call out Donald Trump’s extreme anti-freedom agenda ahead of his rally in Richmond, Virginia.

Read highlights from the press conference below:

  • “Trump is proud of appointing the Supreme Court justices necessary to overturn Roe v. Wade. He brags about ripping away reproductive freedom from millions of women across the country, he’s called for women to be punished for having an abortion and to punish the providers that provide that care, and he wants to take credit for the extreme abortion bans passed by Republicans in states across the country … and we’re here to give him that credit. Because even though Virginians stopped MAGA Republicans’ attempts to pass an extreme abortion ban here in Virginia by voting at the ballot box this past November, the stakes could not be higher for reproductive freedom this November,” said Biden-Harris National Advisory Board member Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan. “President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are fighting to protect reproductive freedom. They are the only candidates fighting to protect reproductive freedom and the right for patients and their doctor to make their own decisions. The choice is crystal clear: A vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is a vote for reproductive freedom. … A vote for Donald Trump is a vote to attack reproductive freedom.

  • “If Trump and his MAGA Republicans enact a nationwide abortion ban, our Freedoms will be stripped away. Virginians and 80% of Americans, want the freedom to decide what is best for our bodies and our lives. We don’t want Donald Trump’s MAGA extremists taking away our options and controlling our futures. If Donald Trump gets his national abortion ban, Virginia women would have nowhere to turn for reproductive health care — We would all lose freedom,” said Dr. Sara Imershein, M.D., M.P.H., a Virginia abortion provider. “The stakes in November couldn’t be higher. Reproductive freedom is on the ballot and women’s health and safety are on the line. The answer: vote. Vote for reproductive freedom. Vote out extremist MAGA politicians. Vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

  • “In states that have passed strict abortion bans, my colleagues struggle with determining at what point a patient is sick ‘enough’ in the eyes of the law to allow her to abort a pregnancy. Often, physicians must confer with hospital attorneys to make these determinations, resulting in delays in care. This could be the reality in Virginia if a national abortion ban becomes law. … Isn’t this a decision that should be left to pregnant patients and their families rather than politicians?” said Dr. Jessica DeMay, M.D., a Richmond OB/GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist.

  • “I chose to have an abortion… I also desperately wanted another child. The quicker I could begin to heal, the sooner I could try to have a healthy baby. But most of all, I thought of my son. I didn’t want to risk my life going through a traumatic delivery when I knew there was something safer,” said Jessica. “I was able to make that life-or-death decision in one of the most difficult times in my life. I did not want to risk my life going through a potentially traumatic labor and delivery. I did not want to tell my son and everyone else in my life why I would not be coming home with a baby after clearly being pregnant. I wanted a baby and to move forward. … If Donald Trump got the national abortion ban he’s pushing for, I wouldn’t have been able to make this choice or access the care that I needed.”
