ICYMI: WEYI Reporting Highlights Michigan Leaders and Doctors Speaking Out Against Mike Rogers’ “Extensive Anti-Abortion Record”

Dr. Aisha Harris: “Mike Rogers has already shown us that he won’t fight to protect reproductive rights. Michiganders want to protect reproductive rights.”

LANSING — WEYI reported that “State Representative Cynthia Neeley was joined by two local doctors to discuss Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, Mike Rogers, and his stance on abortion.” Rogers has an “extensive anti-abortion record” that “has already shown us that he won’t fight to protect reproductive rights.”

  • State Representative Cynthia Neeley: “Access to reproductive health care is an essential component of women’s health care, but Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers has an extensive anti-abortion record. Our next senator should be someone who will fight to protect reproductive rights, and that’s why I’m proud to support Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin.”
  • Dr. Aisha Harris: “Reproductive freedom is essential. It is not just abortion but broad access that impacts and saves lives. Mike Rogers has already shown us that he won’t fight to protect reproductive rights. Michiganders want to protect reproductive rights.”
  • Dr. Brittany Tayler: “As a pediatrician, I see every day how important it is for families to have control over their reproductive health decisions. Protecting the right to safe and accessible abortion care is critical for the health of women, children, and families. Families, in consultation with their doctors, should be empowered to make these deeply personal decisions without political interference. We can’t afford to have politicians like Mike Rogers who want to ban abortion in the Senate.”

This follows extensive reporting about Rogers’ dangerous anti-abortion record. Rogers wanted to “enshrine fetal personhood in the Constitution,” “consistently voted” for abortion bans, and celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

NEW: Politico Influence Reports Mike Rogers “Received More than a Half Million Dollars from Two Dark Money Groups”

Politico Influence: “Mike Rogers, the Republican running for Senate in Michigan, several years ago received more than a half million dollars from two dark money groups.”

LANSING — A bombshell new report from Politico Influence details how Mike Rogers “received more than a half million dollars from two dark money groups that were in favor of a deregulatory policy on 5G that he advocated in press hits and op-eds.”

Rogers “declined to tell the Washington Post back in 2020 who was funding the effort” while also defending a “primary backer of the group[‘s]” “financial status when asked how its bankruptcy affected the terms of any spectrum sale.”

This is the latest in a series of reports of Rogers selling out to big corporations to benefit himself.

“Mike Rogers will say and do anything to advance his own interests and benefit himself. It’s clear that Rogers is only in this race for himself and his wealthy special interest backers,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Chan.

Politico Influence: 500K to Deregulate 5G

  • Mike Rogers, the Republican running for Senate in Michigan, several years ago received more than a half million dollars from two dark money groups that were in favor of a deregulatory policy on 5G that he advocated in press hits and op-eds, Daniel reports.
  • In 2020, the former representative was announced as the chair of 5G Action Now, a group that was urging the Federal Communications Commission to move faster on approving fifth-generation wireless technology. He warned that China was going to be the leader in 5G unless government agencies removed barriers to 5G implementation. Rogers was paid $225,000 by the coalition in 2020, according to a 990 form from the organization seen by POLITICO.
  • 5G Action Now described itself as a “501(c)4 advocacy organization that works to educate members of Congress and the American people” about the issue but did not disclose its donors. Rogers declined to tell the Washington Post back in 2020 who was funding the effort but said he expected the group to release more details soon.
  • Rogers wrote several op-eds about 5G policy during his time as chair of the coalition, although one he did for DefenseOne in 2020 didn’t disclose his connection with the group. When Rogers was asked by NextTV if “wireless ISPs, ISPs, satellite companies” backed the group, he said: “Yeah, you can assume people who are interested in clearing the space responsibly” wanted to inform the public about 5G.
  • While the group never released its donors, Intelsat, a global satellite provider, was a primary backer of the group, a person directly familiar with the matter told PI. 5G Action Now was pushing for an outcome that Intelsat had a direct financial stake in, allowing a quick sale of its C-band spectrum for 5G. In 2020, Rogers also defended Intelsat’s financial status when asked how its bankruptcy affected the terms of any spectrum sale.
  • He was also paid $380,000 by another dark-money group called Keeping America Safe, according to the organization’s 2021 and 2022 990s seen by POLITICO. The 501(c4) group called itself a “coalition of local and state public safety organizations, businesses, and concerned citizens across the nation” that wanted to encourage innovation and investment in wireless networks as well as provide spectrum to wireless providers to make sure that consumers and public safety officials had access to “high-speed, next-generation wireless services.”
  • Rogers and his wife also launched a group called Leadership to Ensure the American Dream, which described its top activity as “strategic media placements” and was used by Rogers to message-test his political principles. The group, which didn’t disclose its donors, received more than a million dollars in donations in 2021 and 2022, according to its 990.
  • Rogers previously said in 2012 that “we ought to get back to full disclosure” when asked about nonprofits funding advertising in the presidential race. “You have no idea where the money is coming from. None. I think that’s wrong.”

Weekly Roundup: MAGA Madness Grows, Dems Show Up at Every Level

With three top-of-the-ticket candidate visits and a VP debate, Michiganders once again had a front-row seat to the battle for our future

LANSING — From the vice presidential debate to the many campaign stops across the state, it has been a busy week in Michigan. With just over 30 days from election day, let’s take a look at all of the important races happening in Michigan.

The Senate race is heating up as Slotkin slams Rogers’s failures to help Michiganders on abortion, health care, and jobs. In the House, Kristen McDonald Rivet is running to fill retiring Congressman Dan Kildee’s seat to ensure it’s not taken by a MAGA extremist who would try to block any progress from being made. Similarly, Curtis Hertel is running to fill Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin’s seat to protect Michiganders in the 7th US Congressional district and win back the House in November.

For the open state Supreme Court seats, Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas have been pounding the pavement reminding voters to find the non-partisan section of the ballot and bubble in Bolden and Thomas. At the state level, hopeful state House representatives are talking to their communities about the importance of protecting Dems’ majority to keep delivering for Michiganders.

Up and down the ballot, Michigan Dems are fighting to push back the dangerous MAGA extremism that threatens Michigan families.

Take a look down below for more updates about the state of the races from the top of the ticket to the bottom:

Presidential Race:

This week, Michiganders saw Governor Tim Walz outline how the Harris-Walz administration will build a brighter future for Americans, in stark contrast with J.D. Vance who, with Donald Trump, will drag us backward. The truth of who Trump and Vance are was on full display as Governor Walz offered voters a better version of what this country could be:

WZMQ: MSU Professor on VP debate and Muslim-American voters

  • Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance will take the stage tonight, giving voters another chance to learn about both campaigns with just over a month left until Election Day. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes said it’s expected the two will answer questions about abortion rights, economic policy, gun control, and immigration.
  • “I expect to see the governor talk a little bit about his personal story but also talk about what it is that he and the vice president plan to do as president and vice president to make this country stronger and better for everyone,” Barnes said. “I imagine he’s a little bit nervous. I don’t blame him for that because that’s this is a big deal and it’s his first time doing something like this, but I know that he’s going to get quite comfortable and he will be answering questions with honesty and sincerity, just like he does everything else that he does. All of that will come through folks, televisions, and into their homes tonight.”

Before Trump and Vance made separate visits to Michigan this Wednesday and Thursday, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes reminded voters of the reality of how Trump and Vance would abandon Michigan workers at the first chance. Trump did nothing when the auto plant in Warren closed, despite promising otherwise, and Michiganders know another Trump presidency would be no different. During his visit, Vance even refused to commit to honoring the $500 grant to protect hundreds of jobs at the GM Lansing plant:

Detroit News: Harris to criticize Trump, Vance in Flint speech for risking EV auto jobs

  • At a press conference Friday morning at the United Auto Workers Local 652 in Lansing, Democratic Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said he was “angry” and “pissed off” after hearing of Vance’s comments about the Lansing GM plant, arguing the lack of commitment from the GOP vice presidential nominee threatened 650 local, union jobs.
  • “In one fell swoop, JD Vance put that all at risk,” Schor said. “He showed that a second Trump term would be a disaster for Lansing, for Michigan and for our country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke in Flint today, emphasizing her constant commitment to delivering for working Michigan families, marking the stark contrast with Trump and Vance’s history of broken promises:

Senate Race:

This week, Mike Rogers once again proved that he is nothing more than a Big Pharma puppet as he opposed Medicare negotiating drug prices. That negotiating saves Michiganders thousands on prescription drug costs every year, but Rogers doesn’t care about Michigan families because they aren’t the ones lining his pockets — drug companies are:

Michigan Advance: Rogers says Medicare negotiating drug price reductions is ‘sugar high politics’

  • According to audio obtained by the Michigan Advance, Rogers said that when it came to negotiating drug prices, it was his belief that the federal government “shouldn’t be engaged in that…”
  • Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Chan sent a statement to the Advance. “After being bankrolled by Big Pharma, Mike Rogers wants to keep prescription drug prices high while Michigan families pay the price. It’s clear that Rogers is only in this race to enrich himself and his wealthy special interest backers even when it hurts working Michiganders,” said Chan.

State Supreme Court:

This week, Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas continued to engage with every community across Michigan. The court will be a big part of deciding the future of our rights, freedoms, and economy in our state. We are so proud that our endorsed candidates want a more just legal system and are making the case, like, state Supreme Court candidate Kimberly Ann Thomas going to the UAW’s International Leadership Conference to support union workers:

This week, Justice Kyra Harris Bolden spoke with The Gander about her beliefs, her perspective, and how her experience on the Court so far has impacted how she considers cases going forward:

The Gander: 5 things to know about incumbent Michigan Supreme Court candidate Kyra Harris Bolden

  • Kyra Harris Bolden said that she approaches every issue that comes before the Michigan Supreme Court with a thoughtful perspective and an open mind, prioritizing fairness and, above all, justice…
  • Ahead of the election, Bolden has rounded up support from Reproductive Freedom for All, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, the Michigan Nurses Association, the Michigan Democratic Party, and other groups with lengthy records of defending reproductive rights.

State House Race:

Democrats are doing incredible work to win in key state House races across the state. For instance, State Representative Betsy Coffia (HD-103) participated in a debate with her Republican challenger Lisa Trombley that highlighted the many differences between the two women. Whether on abortion, housing, or gun violence, Coffia spoke about her concrete ideas to improve her district — while Trombley offered vague notions at best:

Michigan Advance: Trombley, Coffia paint contrasting pictures for northern Michigan

  • Coffia and Trombley showed a stark contrast on things like climate change, gun control and abortion, while also addressing more local topics, like northern Michigan’s difficult housing market and the struggles of area cherry farmers…
  • “I grew up in a hunting family. That’s part of how we fed ourselves in the winter, was venison,” Coffia said. “I’m an excellent shot with a pistol and I enjoy target shooting with my sheriff in Grand Traverse (County). And this is about reasonable protections for public safety and especially our children. There is more we can do.” Coffia said she wants to look at additional action in the term ahead.

In the UP, state House Rep. Jenn Hill is facing weatherman turned MAGA conspiracy theorist Karl Bohnak in Michigan’s 109th congressional district. Bohnak has followed the beat of Trump’s extremist drum, pushing unfounded claims of election fraud and vaccine conspiracies:

The Independent: In Michigan, a ranting, QAnon-adjacent fired weatherman is trying to pass himself off as a moderate Republican

  • In that same interview, Bohnak expressed confidence in a belief that the 2020 election had been stolen by Joe Biden via “massive fraud”. There was also an oblique reference to vaccines being related to Nazi experiments, as Bohnak opined about how infamous war criminal Josef Mengele “injected poison…”
  • “Karl Bohnak is the embodiment of MAGA chaos, spouting extremist conspiracy theories left and right with no attachment to reality. He has become an embarrassment to the UP who is no longer fit to be a weatherman and certainly isn’t fit to represent Michiganders in the state House,” state Democratic Party chair Lavora Barnes commented to The Independent.

This is just a fraction of what’s happening at every level of the ballot, but Michigan Dems are proud to be fighting for Michiganders every day. Til next week,

Signing off,

Michigan Dems

STATEMENT: Mayor Schor on Vance Threatening $500 Million Investment in Lansing

LANSING — With J.D. Vance refusing to commit to honoring the $500 million federal grant for the GM plant in Lansing, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor released the following statement:

“J.D. Vance is putting hundreds of jobs at the GM Lansing Grand River plant at risk by refusing to support the $500 million investment VP Harris delivered with her tiebreaking vote for the Inflation Reduction Act. These grants will ensure we have more good-paying, union jobs right here in Lansing to keep Michigan at the forefront of the auto industry. This election is a choice between Vice President Harris’ commitment to invest in manufacturing jobs and American workers, and build an opportunity economy — and Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, who are threatening to withdraw the dollars for these jobs. I hope everyone in Lansing and Michigan and across the nation are paying attention.”

STATEMENT: Michigan Dems Chair Calls Out Trump’s Sham Saginaw Visit

LANSING — Today, Donald Trump will host a rally at Saginaw Valley State University to try to peddle his extremist Project 2025 agenda to young voters. Ahead of this event, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“Trump is the first president who made the coming generations have fewer rights than their parents and grandparents when he overturned Roe v Wade. None of the lies that he will spew today will hide how Trump failed young Michiganders for years on the issues they care most about.

“His Project 2025 agenda would only continue his record of stripping away freedoms and robbing the next generation of their democracy, their economy, and their environment. Young voters know that if they want a better, brighter future with more freedoms and more jobs — Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate they can trust.”

STATEMENT: Michigan Dems Chair Condemns Vance Abandoning Michigan Jobs

Chair Barnes calls out Vance for refusing to commit to honor the Biden administration’s funding to save GM’s Lansing Grand River Plant

LANSING — Yesterday, during a campaign stop in Auburn Hills, vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance refused to say whether or not a potential Trump administration would honor the $500 million grant to build EVs at GM’s Lansing Grand River Plant. Without that grant, hundreds of autoworkers could lose their jobs.

“It’s plain and simple, Trump and Vance do not care about the middle class and they do not care about investing in Michigan jobs,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “Vance couldn’t even answer a simple question, will you protect autoworkers and create more jobs or not? If they cared about Michiganders, they would promise to keep these high-quality, manufacturing jobs — but they don’t. Let’s not forget, Trump stood in Michigan and promised that not one plant would close under his watch – then, Michiganders watched as GM’s Warren factory shuttered its doors and we lost hundreds of jobs.

“Another Trump presidency would be a disaster for Michigan jobs, while the Biden-Harris administration has led to a manufacturing boom. Vice President Kamala Harris understands how important these jobs are, and we must elect her this fall so that she can continue to invest in our industries and keep our jobs here in Michigan. Michiganders know it, and it’s why they will deliver our state for Harris-Walz this November.”

ICYMI: On MSNBC, Michigan Dems Chair Highlights “83 County Operation” to Win in November

Chair Barnes spoke with Chris Jansing about Michiganders’ feelings on the ground after the VP debate

LANSING — In case you missed it, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes spoke with MSNBC’s Chris Jansing about Michigan Dems’ work to energize voters across the state to elect Dems up and down the ballot. With last night’s vice presidential debate, all eyes are on battleground states like Michigan, where the race is tight but we are fired up and turning out the vote. As Chair Barnes put it, “We are everywhere talking to everyone, to make sure we win this election in November.”

From the UP to Detroit from the West Side to the East, Democrats all over the state are working hard to secure votes and ensure that voters understand the stark contrast between Democrats and Republicans on the ticket, whether it’s Trump’s Project 2025 agenda or Mike Rogers’ extremism (and Florida residence!).

Last night, the contrast was clear at the debate as Vance proved himself to be a Trump puppet with the same extremist lies and misinformation as his running mate. Governor Walz, on the other hand, demonstrated a vision of a brighter, kinder future with him and Vice President Kamala Harris in the White House.

ICYMI: Mike Rogers’ Support for ‘Fetal Personhood’ Could Threaten Access to IVF and Contraception [Michigan Independent]

LANSING — New reporting from Michigan Independent details how Mike Rogers “voted consistently for laws that would interfere with the bodily autonomy” of Michiganders, including “a national abortion ban” and bills that “could threaten access to IVF and contraception.”

In Congress, Rogers voted for “fetal personhood’ laws,” and he twice “co-sponsored legislation that would have withdrawn federal approval of the abortion drug mifepristone.” Rogers tried to explain his opposition to Proposal 3 by saying he’s “‘a pro-life guy, I’ve voted pro-life, and I don’t walk away from that.’

This follows other reports of Rogers’ extensive anti-abortion record. Rogers wanted to “enshrine fetal personhood in the Constitution,” “consistently voted” for abortion bans, and celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

Read Michigan Independent’s reporting on Mike Rogers’ extensive record threatening access to abortion, IVF, and contraception:

Michigan Independent: Mike Rogers’ support for ‘fetal personhood’ could threaten access to IVF and contraception

  • Michigan Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers has said that he thinks the issue of abortion should be handled by the states. He says on his campaign website that he supports keeping fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) legal and accessible.
  • However, while serving in Congress from 2001 to 2015, Rogers voted consistently for laws that would interfere with the bodily autonomy of his constituents, including so-called “fetal personhood” laws.
  • Rogers is running for the open Senate seat of retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow against Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the Nov. 5 general election.
  • In 2003, Rogers co-sponsored legislation that would have withdrawn federal approval of the abortion drug mifepristone. He co-sponsored it again in 2005.
  • In 2012, Rogers voted for a national abortion ban, and in 2013 he co-sponsored a bill that would have made abortion illegal in all 50 states.
  • In 2013, Roger co-sponsored the “Life at Conception Act,” which if enacted would restrict access to IVF and birth control methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) or emergency contraception such as Plan B. The bill would “implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person”.
  • If laws defining personhood as legally accruing to zygotes from the moment of fertilization are enacted, embryos or fertilized eggs created through IVF will be considered unborn children, and intentionally destroying or disposing of them will be considered murder. Those who support fetal personhood legislation say that life begins at fertilization and even contraception or emergency contraception will place that life in danger.
  • “Assuming you’re interpreting personhood the way American abortion opponents do, either you can be for IVF or you can be for fetal personhood, but you can’t be for both,” Mary Ziegler, a reproductive rights historian and law professor at the University of California Davis told the Michigan Independent. “So either they’re lying about the IVF part or they’re lying about the fetal personhood part.”
  • In 2022, voters in Michigan approved an amendment to the state constitution that affirmed the right to abortion without restrictions on gestational age. Rogers, who was living in Florida at the time, said during a March 2023 interview with the WKAR television show “Off the Record” that while he was not familiar with the text of the measure, he probably would not have voted for it. He said, “I’m a pro-life guy, I’ve voted pro-life, and I don’t walk away from that.”
  • “Mike Rogers can’t hide from his extensive record backing abortion bans which would rip away Michiganders’ freedom to make their own personal medical decisions,” Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Chan said in a statement posted on Sept. 17. “It’s clear that Rogers will say and do anything to benefit himself, and Michigan families can’t trust him to represent us.”

Flint Doctors and Leaders Sound Alarm on Mike Rogers’ Extensive Anti-Abortion Record

Flint doctors and leaders call out Mike Rogers for supporting dangerous abortion bans

LANSING — Today, State Representative Cynthia Neeley, Dr. Aisha Harris, and Dr. Brittany Tayler, sounded the alarm on Mike Rogers’ extensive anti-abortion record at a press conference in Flint.

“Access to reproductive health care is an essential component of women’s health care, but Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers has an extensive anti-abortion record. Our next senator should be someone who will fight to protect reproductive rights, and that’s why I’m proud to support Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin,” said State Representative Cynthia Neeley.

“Reproductive freedom is essential. It is not just abortion but broad access that impacts and saves lives. Mike Rogers has already shown us that he won’t fight to protect reproductive rights. Michiganders want to protect reproductive rights,” said Dr. Aisha Harris.

“As a pediatrician, I see every day how important it is for families to have control over their reproductive health decisions. Protecting the right to safe and accessible abortion care is critical for the health of women, children, and families. Families, in consultation with their doctors, should be empowered to make these deeply personal decisions without political interference. We can’t afford to have politicians like Mike Rogers who want to ban abortion in the Senate,” said Dr. Brittany Tayler.

Rogers “supported a national abortion ban” and he “consistently voted” for abortion bans, and he co-sponsored four bills that “could restrict or effectively ban IVF.” Rogers twice “co-sponsored legislation to withdraw federal approval of the abortion-inducing medication Mifepristone.”

Rogers wanted to “enshrine fetal personhood in the Constitution,” and he celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. If Rogers had “lived in Michigan instead of Florida” in 2022, he would have voted against Proposal 3.

STATEMENT: Michigan Dems Chair Slams Trump-Vance Economic Record in Vance’s Post-Debate Michigan Visit

LANSING — Today, vice presidential candidate and MAGA lackey J.D. Vance will visit Auburn Hills and Marne to lie about workers and businesses in Michigan. Ahead of this stop on his misinformation tour, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“J.D. Vance and Donald Trump would be a disaster for manufacturing in Michigan and have nothing but empty promises to offer the workers and industries that form the lifeblood of our economy. Vance’s claims that their Project 2025 agenda will uplift working families are nothing but lies. Luckily, Michiganders know the truth: Project 2025 will cost them thousands every year so Trump can keep lining the pockets of billionaires.

“Today, Vance will ignore Trump’s record of failing workers, breaking promises, and giving billionaires tax cuts at the cost of the middle class. Meanwhile, under Vice President Harris, Michigan is experiencing a manufacturing boom, as she helped create nearly 425,000 jobs, including more than 19,000 in manufacturing. Vance is once again proving that Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz are the only ones who will fight for Michigan’s workers.”
