Native Communities Can’t Afford a Second Trump Term

DNC Director of Outreach Communications Tracy King released the following statement:

“This election is about two drastically different visions for America: the Harris-Walz vision of a new way forward for our country where all Native people have the opportunity to not just get by, but to get ahead, versus the Trump-Vance plan to drag our country backward. The Biden-Harris administration has fought for Tribal Nations and Tribal communities through historic investments to improve Tribal health care, public safety, language preservation, and education, close the digital divide, expand economic opportunities, and address the impacts of climate change on Tribal communities. On the other hand, Donald Trump and JD Vance have failed Native communities, proposing cuts to critical services, undermining federal Tribal land protections and efforts to address the climate crisis, and spewing hateful rhetoric. The contrast couldn’t be clearer: Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the only candidates in this race championing the rights of Native communities and taking steps to advance Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.”

Donald Trump and JD Vance have repeatedly attacked the ACA, which helped expand coverage for and meet the health needs of Native Americans, and a judge found Trump’s administration caused “irreparable harm” by delaying COVID-19 relief funds for Tribes.

NBC News: “Trump doubles down, saying ‘Obamacare Sucks’ and must be replaced”

NOTUS: “Vance suggested overhauling Obamacare would still be a priority. ‘Well, I think we’re definitely gonna have to fix the health care problem in this country,’ he said.”

New York Times: “The Trump administration formally declared its opposition to the entire Affordable Care Act on Wednesday, arguing in a federal appeals court filing that the signature Obama-era legislation was unconstitutional and should be struck down. Such a decision could end health insurance for some 21 million Americans and affect many millions more who benefit from the law’s protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and required coverage for pregnancy, prescription drugs and mental health.”

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: “Despite the assurance of health care, AI/ANs face persistent health disparities, including a high uninsurance rate, barriers to accessing care, and significant physical and mental health needs. Like many other groups, AI/ANs have benefited greatly from the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) coverage expansions.”

Kaiser Family Foundation: “Nonelderly AIAN and Hispanic people had the highest uninsured rates at 19.1% and 18.0%, respectively as of 2022…

“For example, between 2010 and 2022, the uninsured rate for AIAN people grew from 2.5 to 2.9 times higher than the uninsured rate for White people, the Hispanic uninsured rate grew from 2.5 to 2.7 times higher than the rate for White people, and Black people remained 1.5 times more likely to be uninsured than White people.”

Kaiser Family Foundation: “Following the ACA’s enactment in 2010 through 2016, coverage increased across all racial and ethnic groups […] Nonelderly Hispanic people had the largest percentage point increase in coverage, with their uninsured rate falling from 32.6% to 19.1%. Nonelderly Black, Asian, and AIAN people also had larger percentage point increases in coverage compared to White people over that period.”

USA Today: “Native Americans, Alaska Natives and a bipartisan group of their allies are worried that repeal of the Affordable Care Act will also eliminate a non-controversial portion of that law that commits federal funding for tribal health care around the country, a move that the National Indian Health Board warns would be ‘catastrophic.’ …

“The law also provides scholarships to Native Americans and Alaska Natives to get medical degrees if they come back and work in their tribes.”

HuffPost: “Judge Orders Trump Administration To Give Tribes Their COVID-19 Relief Funds.”

“A federal judge on Monday ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to distribute $679 million in emergency COVID-19 relief funds to Native American tribes that should have gotten it months ago, and he chided the agency for causing ‘irreparable harm’ with its delays.”

Trump repeatedly proposed slashing funding for vital programs supporting Native Americans on issues like education and housing.

Associated Press: “Tribes Bash Proposed Trump Budget Cuts To Native American Programs.”

“The proposed budget would slash $64 million in federal Native American funding for education, $21 million for law enforcement and safety, $27 million for natural resources management programs run by tribes plus $23 million from human services, which includes the Indian Child Welfare Act, said Carina Miller, a councilwoman with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, in Oregon. It would also eliminate funding for tribal work on climate change and cut block grant programs that provide housing assistance for Native Americans, she added.”

Las Vegas Sun: “The budget calls for massive cutbacks in staffing — 1,835 National Parks Service employees, 1,209 from the U.S. Geological Survey, 559 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and 330 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.”

Washington Post: “Shrink funding for Adult Employment and Training Activities, which serve veterans, Native Americans and young people who have dropped out of high school, by nearly half, from $810 million in 2017 to $490.3 million in 2019.”

CNN: “The Budget proposes to eliminate rural business and cooperative programs given findings that the programs have failed to meet the program goals and are improperly managed.”

Trump has repeatedly shown his willingness to undermine federal Tribal land protections and revoke funding for programs that address climate change despite the significant risk it poses to Tribal communities.

Associated Press: “Dozens of Native American tribes in six Western states expressed outrage Thursday at President Trump’s proposed budget cuts to American Indian programs, saying they would erase significant progress on child welfare and climate change and gut social services and education on reservations across the U.S… Eliminating $10 million for a program that helps tribes prepare for and deal with rapid environmental change would be particularly harmful, said Fawn Sharp, president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.”

New York Times: “Dispossessed, Again: Climate Change Hits Native Americans Especially Hard”

Financial Times: “Donald Trump would gut Joe Biden’s landmark IRA climate law if elected”

“Donald Trump is planning to gut US President Joe Biden’s landmark climate law, increase investment in fossil fuels and roll back regulations aimed at accelerating the transition to electric vehicles if he is elected next year. … The Inflation Reduction Act — the centrepiece of Biden’s economic strategy, with $369bn in tax breaks and subsidies for clean energy — would be in Trump’s crosshairs.”

Washington Post: “In 2016, President Barack Obama created the Bears Ears National Monument […] His proclamation recognized the area’s ‘extraordinary archaeological and cultural record’ and the land’s ‘profoundly sacred’ meaning to many Native American tribes. Eleven months later, in early December of 2017, President Trump reduced Bears Ears by 85 percent…”

The Hill: “The amount of land placed into trust by Interior shrunk to 75,000 acres during Trump’s four years in office, from 560,000 acres during former President Obama’s two terms.”

Associated Press: “The rule, which takes effect in November, reverses a Trump-era action that limited the ability of states and tribes to review pipelines, dams and other federally regulated projects within their borders.”

Bloomberg: “Trump will discuss the ways he intends to woo foreign manufacturers to the US through a lower corporate tax rate, fewer regulations, cheap energy, strong ports and even government land.”

Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would eliminate the Head Start Program after he tried in his first term to cut millions in scholarship funding meant to help ensure Native families have access to quality education.

KNAU: “Trump Administration Proposes Eliminating Tribal Scholarships For Third Year In A Row.”

“The administration’s fiscal year 2020 budget would slash nearly $40 million from tribal scholarship and education programs administered by the Bureau of Indian Education… [Navajo Office of Scholarship and Financial Assistance’s] Graham says in 2017 nearly $10 million in federal funding went to partial scholarships for nearly 4,000 Navajo students. The Trump administration’s proposal would eliminate all of it. Just over 4 percent of Navajo tribal members have a bachelor’s degree compared with about a third of the total U.S. population.”

Project 2025’s Mandate for Leadership, pg. 482: “Eliminate the Head Start program.”

REMINDER: Trump and JD Vance have long disrespected Native Americans, from claiming Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a “fake holiday” and mocking Native American history to spewing racially charged rhetoric.

Trump, Faith and Freedom Conference: “But in history, they say Andrew Jackson was treated the worst president. He was a great general and a very good president.”

Trump: “‘I think I might have more Indian blood than a lot of the so-called Indians that are trying to open up the reservations.’”

Washington Post: “In 2000, when New York was considering expanding Native American casinos in the Catskill Mountains, a series of TV, newspaper and radio ads popped up in the state accusing the Mohawk Indian tribe of having long criminal records and ties to the mob…

As far as the public knew, the ads were sponsored by a newly formed group called the Institute for Law and Safety. The group claimed that it was funded by 12,000 ‘grass-roots, pro-family’ donors. But in reality, it was bankrolled by Trump’s casino company… Trump paid more than $1 million for the campaign.”

Washington Post: “One hundred years after U.S. soldiers killed and maimed hundreds of Sioux men, women and children at the Wounded Knee massacre, Congress formally apologized in 1990… President Trump used that same massacre as a punchline in his latest broadside against Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the Democratic presidential hopeful whom he regularly calls ‘Pocahontas’ in jeering reference to her claims of American Indian heritage.”

Indianz: “President Trump Disavows Indigenous Peoples Day”

Associated Press: “‘Sadly, in recent years, radical activists have sought to undermine Christopher Columbus’s legacy,’ Trump said in his proclamation declaring Monday Columbus Day. ‘These extremists seek to replace discussion of his vast contributions with talk of failings, his discoveries with atrocities, and his achievements with transgressions.’”

U.S. News & World Report: “President Donald Trump’s proclamation of Monday as Columbus Day contains a notable omission: any mention of Native Americans.”

Washington Post: “November Is Native American Heritage Month. Critics Say Trump Is Subverting It With A New Celebration Of The Founding Fathers.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “In Ohio, JD Vance Implied Tribes Were ‘Enemy,’ And Called Indigenous Peoples’ Day ‘Fake’”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Vance also made comments on social media disparaging the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day […] He posted on Twitter in October 2021 ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a fake holiday created to sow division.”

Breitbart: “J.D. Vance Criticizes Opponent Matt Dolan For Indians Name Change, Rails Against ‘Weak Republicans’”

“‘And when the woke mob came after the Cleveland Indians, he bent the knee and changed their name,’ Vance added.”

ICYMI: Detroit News: “History Casts Doubt On Donald Trump’s Auto Industry Promises”

In response to new reporting holding Trump accountable for his failed record on Michigan’s auto industry, DNC Spokesperson Stephanie Justice released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is trying to rewrite his record on the auto industry, but Michigan voters know the truth: as president, he left behind a trail of broken promises. Trump failed on his promise that no plants would close on his watch, created new incentives for companies to ship jobs overseas, and sat back as Michiganders lost their jobs – all while giving handouts to his billionaire buddies and corporations. Trump failed Michigan once, and voters won’t give him the chance to do so again. Michiganders will reject Trump and his Project 2025 agenda in November.”

Detroit News: History casts doubt on Donald Trump’s auto industry promises

[Craig Mauger and Kalea Hall, 9/30/24]

  • Former President Donald Trump has been promising Michigan voters this fall that he can revive the state’s auto industry and return it to “greatness,” but the Republican nominee failed to fully deliver on similar guarantees, made eight years ago, before his first term in the White House.
  • On Friday night, Trump told a crowd at Macomb Community College in Warren that if he’s elected this fall, he’s going to bring back Michigan’s auto industry “at levels that have never been seen before.” About eight years ago, on Oct. 31, 2016, at the same venue, Trump told another Michigan crowd that he would “bring your jobs back” and, if elected in November 2016, “you won’t lose one plant.”
  • Yet, the number of jobs in vehicle and parts manufacturing in Michigan declined during Trump’s first term — including before the COVID-19 pandemic hit — according to data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. And while there were some additional investments made by the industry in Michigan over his four years in office, there were also auto plants that closed in the state, including the General Motors Co. Warren Transmission plant in 2019.
  • The number of jobs in vehicle and parts manufacturing in Michigan was about 175,000 when Trump took office in January 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It dropped to 171,300 in February 2020, a decrease of 2.2%, before the state reported its first COVID-19 cases in March 2020, leading to Michigan auto plants being shuttered for eight weeks under a public health order from Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
  • By the end of Trump’s term, there were 166,300 jobs in vehicle and parts manufacturing in Michigan, a drop of 5% from when he took office, according to the bureau’s data.
  • Trump is making the same guarantees in 2024 about the industry that the Republican failed on during his first term, said Gene Sperling, an economist and adviser to multiple Democratic presidents, including Biden.
  • “When he had his chance, he completely broke every single promise that he made to the American automobile manufacturing industry,” Sperling said of Trump.

Louisiana Reclassifies Life-Saving Medication, Further Restricting Care in the State

Today, Louisiana – a state with a near-total abortion ban made possible by Donald Trump – will go even further to restrict reproductive care in the state. In a move doctors warn risks the health and safety of women, Louisiana will reclassify the abortion pills misoprostol and mifepristone as controlled substances.

As Louisiana MAGA Republicans follow Trump’s anti-reproductive freedom playbook and put women at risk by placing further restrictions on safe, life-saving medication, DNC Spokesperson Maddy Mundy issued the following statement:

“As Trump brags about ripping reproductive protections away from women across the country, extreme Republicans have followed Trump’s anti-reproductive rights playbook, restricting abortion and life-saving medication in Louisiana and across the South. Women are dying under these laws that Trump made possible. Louisiana’s new law is only the latest example of access to reproductive care being taken away from women after Trump overturned Roe. Now, if Trump reaches the White House again, he’ll take these extreme attacks on reproductive freedom nationwide with his Project 2025 playbook. Trump’s Project 2025 agenda includes banning abortion nationwide and restricting access to mifepristone, a life-saving medication. The only candidates in this race fighting to protect and restore reproductive rights for all Americans are Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz.”

Louisiana’s new law makes abortion pills a controlled substance and puts the lives and health of pregnant women at risk.

MSNBC: Opinion | “Louisiana’s new restriction on this abortion pill will making giving birth here more risky”

NBC News: “Louisiana’s new abortion pill law may delay lifesaving care for women, doctors say”

NPR: “Abortion pills will become controlled substances in Louisiana on Oct. 1”

Following Trump’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, Louisiana Republicans passed one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country and even considered giving women prison time for seeking reproductive care.

AP News: “Louisiana lawmakers reject adding exceptions of rape and incest to abortion ban”

Despite pleas from Democrats and gut-wrenching testimony from doctors and rape survivors, a GOP-controlled legislative committee rejected a bill Tuesday that would have added cases of rape and incest as exceptions to Louisiana’s abortion ban.

“In the reliably red state, which is firmly ensconced in the Bible Belt and where even some Democrats oppose abortions, adding exceptions to Louisiana’s strict law has been an ongoing battle for advocates — with a similar measure failing last year. Currently, of the 14 states with abortion bans at all stages of pregnancy, six have exceptions in cases of rape and five have exceptions for incest.”

CNN: “These male politicians are pushing for women who receive abortions to be punished with prison time”

This is only possible because Donald Trump paved the way for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, something he has boasted that he is “proud” of.

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”

NEW: Biden-Harris Admin’s Latest Action Saves Seniors Thousands on Medication, Trump-Vance Project 2025 Would Raise Drug Costs on 18 Million Seniors

In response to the latest announcement from the Biden-Harris administration on lower prescription drug prices, DNC National Press Secretary ⁨Emilia Rowland⁩ released the following statement:

“Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration, America’s seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in Medicare will soon pay less for 54 prescription drugs they depend on to treat conditions like cancer, osteoporosis, and pneumonia. The historic cost-savings in the Inflation Reduction Act will bring down costs for 822,000 Americans, and some seniors will save more than $3,800 per day. The contrast couldn’t be more clear: After spending his first term desperately trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act on behalf of Big Pharma CEOs, Trump and Vance are threatening to do it again, and go even further with their Project 2025 plans to repeal the insulin price cap in the Inflation Reduction Act. All told, the Trump-Vance ticket would skyrocket health care costs for over 18 million Americans. Vice President Harris cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate for the Inflation Reduction Act without a single Republican vote, and as president she will hold Big Pharma accountable and continue lowering costs for seniors and all Americans.”

Today, President Biden and Vice President Harris announced that they will bring down prices for 54 more prescription drugs thanks to Democrats’ historic Inflation Reduction Act, which passed with Vice President Harris casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

The White House: “Today, our Administration is announcing that starting in October, seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in Medicare will pay less for 54 Part B prescription drugs. That means more money will go back into the pockets of people with Medicare – including some of the 822,000 seniors and people with disabilities who use these drugs annually to treat conditions like cancer, osteoporosis, and pneumonia, and some seniors will save more than $3,800 per day.”

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: “Because of the Biden-Harris lower cost prescription drug law, the Inflation Reduction Act, which established the Medicare Prescription Drug Inflation Rebate Program, some people with Medicare who use these drugs in the last quarter of 2024 may save between $1 and $3,854 per day. For example, someone taking a drug called Kymriah, which treats cancer, could save as much as $3,000.”

The Hill: “Inflation Reduction Act rebates yield savings for 54 Medicare Part B drugs”

“The 54 drugs announced by HHS will have a lowered Part B coinsurance rate starting on Oct. 1 through the end of 2024.”

A Harris-Walz administration will continue to build on this historic work: extending the $35/month price cap on insulin for all Americans, accelerating the speed of Medicare negotiations to lower costs, and increasing competition and demanding transparency in the healthcare industry.

Harris for President Report, A New Way Forward for The Middle Class: “Vice President Harris and Governor Walz will chart a New Way Forward that not only protects these achievements but builds on them by expanding the Inflation Reduction Act’s cost-saving provisions to benefit all Americans.

“They will:

  • Extend the $35 cap on insulin and $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket costs to all Americans, not just seniors. This action would bring significant relief for middle-class Americans who struggle with their prescription costs every day.
  • Accelerate the speed of Medicare prescription drug negotiations. This will build on the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to allow Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs and cut the cost of some of the most expensive and most commonly used drugs by approximately 40 percent to 80 percent starting in 2026. Vice President Harris will allow Medicare to accelerate the speed of negotiations so the prices of more drugs come down faster.
  • Increase competition and demand transparency in the healthcare industry. Vice President Harris will crack down on pharmaceutical companies that block competition and abusive practices by pharmaceutical middlemen who squeeze small pharmacies’ profits and raise costs for consumers.”

While the IRA is lowering prescription drug costs, Trump and Vance’s Project 2025 agenda and extreme congressional Republicans threaten to rip away affordable health care access from millions of Americans.

Axios: “How Trump could weaken Medicare drug pricing negotiations”

Daily Beast: “Trump Revives Plan to Dismantle Obamacare if Elected in 2024”

The Hill: “On the campaign trail, Trump has doubled down on his promise to repeal the ACA, a feat he fell one vote short of in 2017.”

NOTUS: “Vance suggested overhauling Obamacare would still be a priority.”

Axios: “RSC budget revives conservative health priorities”

“The Republican Study Committee today laid out a budget proposal that suggests a health policy blueprint if the GOP controls the White House and at least one chamber of Congress next year…

“The health care section … calls for killing the Inflation Reduction Act and its drug price provisions. … It would remove many of the Affordable Care Act’s protections for pre-existing conditions.”

Reuters: “Biden, Harris hail Medicare drug price cuts that will save billions”

Trump’s only “concept of a plan” on health care is his Project 2025 agenda, which includes rolling back cost-saving measures on health care and prescription drugs from millions of Americans.

Harris for President Report, The Trump-Vance “Concept” on Health Care: “After nearly a decade of endlessly promising to reveal his health care plan, Donald Trump claims he only has “concepts of a plan.” The truth is he does have a plan— he just doesn’t want voters to know about it. His plan adds up to this: eliminating health insurance and raising costs for tens of millions of Americans, including those with preexisting conditions, seniors, small business owners, working families, pregnant women, and kids.”

Question: “You have long vowed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare… Do you have a plan and can you tell us what it is?”

[…]

Trump: “I have concepts of a plan.”

Trump’s Real Project 2025 Plan: Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would accelerate efforts to privatize Medicare and raise prescription drug prices including by getting rid of the $35/month insulin price cap for seniors established thanks to President Biden and Vice President Harris’ historic Inflation Reduction Act.

JD Vance 🤝Project 2025: Roll Back Women’s Privacy, Open Door for Pregnancy Monitoring

DNC National Press Secretary Emilia Rowland released the following statement:

“Trump and Vance’s Project 2025 agenda should terrify every American: banning abortion nationwide, threatening doctors with jail time, restricting access to contraception, and even monitoring women’s pregnancies. Under Project 2025’s Orwellian blueprint, every abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, and incidental pregnancy loss from medical treatments like chemo could be reported to the federal government. Vance even personally opposed reproductive health privacy protections he said would thwart the enforcement of extreme abortion bans. This isn’t about policy, it’s about control. This November, voters will remind Trump and Vance that they have no place in our doctor’s offices.”

Both JD Vance and Project 2025 have called on HHS to roll back protections that narrow the ability of law enforcement to access the medical records of people seeking reproductive services. In the Senate, Vance even signed onto a letter opposing an HHS rule to protect reproductive health care privacy.

Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership, p. 497: “OCR should withdraw its Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidance on abortion. OCR should withdraw its June 2022 guidance that purports to address patient privacy concerns following the Dobbs decision but is actually a politicized statement in favor of abortion and against Dobbs. HIPAA covers patients in the womb, but this guidance treats them as nonpersons contrary to law. The guidance is unnecessary and contributes to ideologically motivated fearmongering about abortion after Dobbs.”

Comments on Proposed Rule: HIPAA Privacy Rule To Support Reproductive Health Care Privacy: “We write to express our concern regarding the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposed rule, ‘HIPAA Privacy Rule To Support Reproductive Health Care Privacy,’ 88 Fed. Reg. 23506 published on April 17, 2023 (the ‘Proposed Rule’), and to urge you to withdraw it immediately.

“Abortion is not health care—it is a brutal act that destroys the life of an unborn child and hurts women. Congress did not authorize HHS to extend special provisions for abortion such as these under the guise of ‘health care.’ The Proposed Rule unlawfully thwarts the enforcement of compassionate laws protecting unborn children and their mothers, and directs health care providers to defy lawful court orders and search warrants.

“The Proposed Rule creates special protections for abortion that limit cooperation with law enforcement, undermine the ability to report abuse, restrict the provision of public health information, and erase the humanity of unborn children…

Sincerely… J.D. Vance United States Senator”

HHS Official Melanie Fontes Rainer: “If a person receives reproductive health care, such as a pregnancy test or treatment for an ectopic pregnancy, and that reproductive health care is lawful in the state where the care is received, the information about the care cannot be disclosed or used by the health care provider or health plan for an investigation, or to impose liability by law enforcement on the patient or the provider…

“No one should have to live in fear that their conversations with their doctor or that their medical claims data might be used to target or track them for seeking lawful reproductive health care.”

Both Trump and Vance have endorsed allowing states to monitor pregnancies AND Trump has called to prosecute women for seeking reproductive care.

HuffPost: “Among other proposals, such as dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, the plan outlines how the government could keep detailed records on abortions and even obtain pregnant patients’ medical records without their consent… There is evidence that, if elected, Trump and his vice presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), would permit or even encourage the type of Orwellian surveillance described in Project 2025.”

Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership, p. 455: “Because liberal states have now become sanctuaries for abortion tourism, HHS should use every available tool, including the cutting of funds, to ensure that every state reports exactly how many abortions take place within its borders, at what gestational age of the child, for what reason, the mother’s state of residence, and by what method.”

Project 2025 Mandate Leadership, p. 455, 456: “Comparisons between live births and abortion should be tracked across various demographic indicators to assess whether certain populations are targeted by abortion providers and whether better prenatal physical, mental, and social care improves infant outcomes and decreases abortion rates, especially among those who are most vulnerable.”

Rolling Stone: “Trump and Vance Have Backed States That Want to Surveil Pregnant Women”

“In May, a host at WGAL, an NBC affiliate in Pennsylvania, noted to Trump that there were ads running that suggested he would support certain states with bans monitoring women’s pregnancies. ‘Well, that would be up to the states, again,’ Trump responded…

“Vance, an Ohio senator, has gone further. Last summer, he signed onto a congressional letter calling on the Biden administration to withdraw a draft rule designed to prevent police in states with abortion bans from using personal health information to track and potentially charge people who travel to other states for abortion care.”

HuffPost: “Trump Is Fine With States Monitoring Pregnant Women So They Don’t Get Abortions”

The Hill: “Trump: It’s up to states to monitor pregnancies, prosecute abortions”

Interviewer, TIME Magazine: “Do you think states should monitor women’s pregnancies so they can know if they’ve gotten an abortion after the ban?”

Trump: “I think they might do that. Again, you’ll have to speak to the individual states. Look, Roe v. Wade was all about bringing it back to the states. And that was a legal, as well as possibly in the hearts of some, in the minds of some, a moral decision. But it was largely a legal decision.”

Interviewer: “Prosecuting women for getting abortions after the ban. But are you comfortable with it?”

Trump: “The states are going to say.”

Trump: “There has to be some form of punishment [for women who have an abortion].”

NEW REPORT: JD Vance Privately Asked For Funding From Biden-Harris Infrastructure Law He Railed Against

In response to new reporting that JD Vance privately asked Secretary Buittigieg for funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that he publicly called a “huge, huge mistake,” DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“JD Vance is once again showing the American people both of his faces. After spending months publicly trashing the Biden-Harris administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that provided hundreds of billions to repair our nation’s transportation network, Vance turned around and privately asked them for funding from the same law he disparaged in public as ‘crazy’ and a ‘huge, huge mistake.’ If Vance and Donald Trump had their way, none of this critical funding would have ever been available for important projects in Ohio and across the country – but fortunately for Vance, Democrats like Vice President Harris were able to deliver actual results for the American people where Trump failed.”

NEW: JD Vance spent months trashing the Biden-Harris administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – before privately asking for over $200 million in funding from the same law from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

AP: “As he campaigned for the Senate two years ago, JD Vance harshly criticized a bipartisan 2021 law to invest more than $1 trillion in America’s crumbling infrastructure, calling it a ‘huge mistake’ shaped by Democrats who want to spend big taxpayer dollars on ‘really crazy stuff.’”

“That hasn’t stopped the first-term Ohio senator and Republican vice-presidential nominee from seeking more than $200 million in federal money made available through the law for projects across his state, according to records reviewed by The Associated Press.”

“After taking office in January 2023, Vance appears to have warmed to the legislation his predecessor helped write — though not publicly.”

“In 10 letters addressed to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg that were sent between 2023 and 2024, Vance requested more than $213 million made available through the law for Ohio projects, according to copies of his correspondence obtained by the AP. At least four of those projects were approved and are slated to get about $130 million, federal records show.”

After Donald Trump’s presidency was marked by years of empty promises and failed plans to fix our nation’s crumbling infrastructure, the Biden-Harris administration was able to deliver actual results.

Spectrum News: “Biden celebrates ‘Infrastructure Week’ by touting $454B in projects from landmark bill”

The Hill: “White House uses Infrastructure Week to tout progress on thousands of projects”

“To date, the administration has launched nearly 13,000 bridge repair projects and improvements on more than 257,000 miles of road. The government has also provided funding for over 5,000 clean school buses intended to lower emissions, as well as funding to help replace up to 1.7 million toxic lead pipes.

“Biden routinely seeks to contrast his administration’s focus on infrastructure with former President Trump’s repeated failure to deliver on an infrastructure bill, despite repeated promises of an ‘infrastructure week.’”

Forbes: “The term ‘Infrastructure Week’ has historically been a punchline because it continually gets announced and then later canceled for other priorities. This year is different.

“On Monday, the Biden-Harris Administration kicked off Infrastructure Week by highlighting the full range of investments and projects from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, Inflation Reduction Act, and American Rescue Plan. … These efforts are making communities and Main Streets stronger and preparing them for the future.”

Under Trump, “Infrastructure Week” was nothing more than a long-running joke.

New York Times: “How ‘Infrastructure Week’ Became a Long-Running Joke”

“At this point in the Trump presidency, ‘Infrastructure Week’ is less a date on the calendar than it is a ‘Groundhog Day’-style fever dream doomed to be repeated.

“Roughly two years after the White House first came up with the idea of discussing, for all of seven days, the pursuit of a bipartisan agreement to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and broadband networks, President Trump more or less torpedoed those plans on Wednesday in a Rose Garden speech.”

CNN: “Like the Bermuda Triangle or Spinal Tap’s new drummer, the words ‘Infrastructure Week’ seem to be cursed. No fewer than seven times – including this very week – has Trump’s White House declared that its chosen theme of a week would be infrastructure – only to see those plans thwarted, often by the President himself.”

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: “Administration officials claim that [Trump’s] new infrastructure plan will support $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investment, but his 2019 budget reveals that that number’s a mirage: the President would cut annual federal support for infrastructure in the long run and shift costs to states, cities, and private individuals. As we previewed here, it likely would mean cuts to some of the areas in which new infrastructure investment is needed most — while providing a potential windfall for private investors.”

Washington Post: “Trump’s 2016 campaign pledges on infrastructure have fallen short, creating opening for Biden”

Even after Trump left office, he railed against bipartisan efforts to fund the Biden-Harris infrastructure decade

Politico: “Donald Trump tried and failed to pass an infrastructure bill so many times over the course of his presidency that his attempts were reduced to a punchline. Now out of office, Trump is trying to ensure that his successor, Joe Biden, suffers the indignity of the ‘infrastructure week’ jokes as well.

“The former president has sounded off repeatedly in the past week about the negotiations taking place between Senate Republicans and Democrats on the Hill and in the White House. He’s encouraged GOP lawmakers to abandon the talks and criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for even entertaining them. Senate Republicans have said, in interviews, that they have directly asked the former president not just to tone down his criticism but to actually support the infrastructure deal.”

Thanks to President Biden and Vice President Harris, the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing billions to update our nation’s roads and bridges, renew our transportation networks, and ensure every American has clean drinking water and access to high-speed internet.

Associated Press: “President Joe Biden signed his hard-fought $1 trillion infrastructure deal into law Monday before a bipartisan, celebratory crowd on the White House lawn, declaring that the new infusion of cash for roads, bridges, ports and more is going to make life ‘change for the better’ for the American people.”

MAGA House Republicans remain hellbent on undermining the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that’s delivering for communities across America.

Washington Post: “It took decades for Congress to deliver on its promise to pour new money into the nation’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports and internet connections. Now, House Republicans are trying to slash some of the same funds. A series of GOP bills to finance the federal government in 2024 would wipe out billions of dollars meant to repair the nation’s aging infrastructure, potentially undercutting a 2021 law that was one of Washington’s rare recent bipartisan achievements. The proposed cuts could hamstring some of the most urgently needed public-works projects across the country, from improving rail safety to reducing lead contamination at schools.”

Insider: “Many congressional Republicans have repeatedly attempted to slash funding for passenger rail and other infrastructure priorities. The House is poised to vote in early November on a transportation funding bill that would strip about $1.5 billion in funding from Amtrak — an approximately 64% cut in the rail system’s annual federal funding.”

🚨 NEW: Donald Trump Is STANDING BY Mark Robinson’s Hateful, Extreme Behavior

In response to Donald Trump refusing to condemn Mark Robinson’s hateful rhetoric, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and JD Vance continue to further isolate themselves as hateful extremists who are so wildly out of touch they are willing to stand behind Mark Robinson even after his own staff have deserted him. Trump and Vance are making it clear to the American people that they have no interest in distancing themselves from Robinson and his toxic brand of MAGA extremism – and voters will remember their silence on Robinson’s disgraceful behavior at the ballot box this November.”

NEW: Donald Trump REFUSED to pull his endorsement of Mark Robinson or condemn his recently exposed hateful, extreme behavior.

Libbey Dean, NewsNation: “Are you going to pull your endorsement of Mark Robinson?”

Trump: “I don’t know the situation.”

“The situation” in question:

CNN: “‘I’m a black NAZI!’: NC GOP nominee for governor made dozens of disturbing comments on porn forum”

News & Observer: “Half of NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s state staff quits, days after campaign staff exodus”

The Hill: “GOP governors pull support for Mark Robinson”

CNN: “Deleted tweets, canceled events, erased endorsements: How Republicans are fleeing from Mark Robinson”

JD Vance has refused MULTIPLE TIMES to answer for or condemn Robinson.

Lauren Mayk, WCAU: “Some news I wanted to talk about out of North Carolina with Mark Robinson. I’m sure you’ve heard about it. Governor Walz is also in this area, he just mentioned it at a rally this afternoon. I don’t know that you’ve gotten a chance to talk about it, so I wanted to ask you, are you comfortable with Mark Robinson as the Republican nominee for governor in North Carolina?”

JD Vance: “Well, look, the allegations are pretty far out there of course, but I know that allegations aren’t necessarily reality, and what I’d say is, it’s ultimately up to Mark Robinson and North Carolina whether he’s going to be their governor and whether he wants to stay in the race. I’ll let them make that decision.” …

Mayk: “Do you believe him that those were not his posts?”

Vance: “I don’t not believe him, I don’t believe him. I just think that you have to let these things sometimes play out in the court of public opinion. He’s going to make whatever arguments he wants to make.”

Reporter: “Senator Vance, do you have any reaction to the Mark Robinson news?”

Vance: *rushes into other room*

Vance: “My comment on Mark Robinson is that Kamala Harris cast the deciding vote on the Inflation Explosion Act and  because of that a lot of Americans can’t afford groceries”

Robinson has a long and shameful history of spewing hate, lies, and conspiracy theories.

News & Observer: “‘Yeah, I said that.’ Mark Robinson embraced Trump’s false claims on 2020 election”

“[Trump] continues to push false claims about the election, and an audio recording obtained by The News & Observer shows Robinson has embraced those claims.

“Robinson, who has endorsed Trump, said in a speech at a church in 2021 that Biden ‘stole the election,’ the recording shows.”

Charlotte Observer: “Robinson said he owns AR-15s, a type of semiautomatic assault rifle, so he can fight back ‘in case the government gets too big for its britches.’”

Robinson: “When the chips are down, when the FBI is knocking on my door, will I cower, will I comply, or will I stand up and fight? Folks, it’s time to stand up and fight.”

HuffPost: “Mark Robinson’s Bizarre Ramble: ‘I Absolutely Want To Go Back To The America Where Women Couldn’t Vote’”

Daily Beast: “God Doesn’t Want Women to Lead, Says N.C. Lieutenant Governor”

HuffPost: “The Unbelievably Bonkers Conspiracy Theorist Running For Governor Of North Carolina”

“North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson has said it himself: He’s a conspiracy theorist.”

“Robinson, who is the state’s lieutenant governor, has said he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if the 1969 moon landing was fake and the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an ‘inside job.’ He’s ‘SERIOUSLY skeptical’ of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. He falsely accused David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, of being a paid actor. He’s claimed that climate change is based on ‘junk science.’”

WRAL: “Robinson said this Sunday during a church service outside Charlotte that God created him specifically to fight against the push for LGBTQ rights and visibility, which he says is turning America into a ‘hellhole.’

“‘I was not crafted to be Mr. Nicey-Nice,’ Robinson said. ‘… God formed me because he knew there was going to be a time when God’s learning was going to be intolerable to the wicked. When children were going to be dragged down to go see the drag show. When pornography was going to be presented to our children in schools.’

“Later on, he also slammed Christian churches that are accepting toward gay and lesbian people.

“‘Makes me sick every time I see it — a church that flies that Rainbow flag, which is a direct spit in the face of God almighty,’ he said.”

Talking Points Memo: “In particular, the Black community has been a major target for Robinson. In various posts over the years he referred to Black people as ‘muddle headed negroes,’ ‘apes,’ and ‘a monkey.’

“‘February is Black History Month. I guess the shortest month of the year is all we need to learn about the separate but equal history of a people who have achieved so little,’ Robinson wrote in 2014.”

Jewish Insider: “Last fall, Raleigh’s News & Observer unearthed an interview in which Robinson spoke with a fringe pastor, Sean Moon, who claimed that the modern incarnation of the four horsemen of the apocalypse includes China, the CIA, Islam and the Rothschild family of ‘international bankers that rule every single national or federal reserve-type style of central bank in every single country.’

“Rather than objecting to the blatantly antisemitic conspiracy theory, Robinson grunted along in agreement. ‘That’s exactly right,’ he said.”

HuffPost: “Top GOP Candidate For N.C. Governor Has A History Of Demeaning Successful Women.”

Robinson is an anti-choice extremist who has said a pregnant woman’s body isn’t hers anymore, railed against exceptions for rape or incest, and thrown his support behind banning abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant.

WGHP: “[Robinson said] that if he had the authority, abortion would be completely illegal in the state. … ‘If I had all the power right now, say I was the governor and had a willing legislature, we could pass a bill right now that says you can’t get an abortion in North Carolina for any reason. … I’d love to pass a law. I’d love to see a heartbeat bill proposed in our legislature.’”

Cardinal & Pine: “Robinson is on the record calling abortion ‘murder,’ and has asserted that once a woman is pregnant ‘it’s not [her] body anymore.’

“When the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade last year, Robinson said in a statement that he was ‘overjoyed’ by the decision and that he had been ‘praying’ for such a thing to happen.”

WNCN: “Robinson: ‘Next goal’ is to restrict abortion at six weeks in NC”

WRAL: “At one point during Friday’s speech, a precursor to the main address former President Donald Trump would give the convention Saturday, the lieutenant governor explained why he rejects all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest.

“‘What about in cases of rape or incest?’ Robinson said, changing his voice to impersonate an abortion rights advocate. ‘It reminds me of the argument about seatbelts,’ Robinson said.”

Vice President Harris’ Plans for an Opportunity Economy Will Power Black Generational Wealth

DNC Director of Outreach Communications Tracy King released the following statement:

“Vice President Harris’ economic policy platform will be a boost to building Black generational wealth and closing the racial wealth gap. A Harris-Walz administration will continue to fight for working- and middle-class Black families by lowering the cost of groceries, rent and home ownership while capping the cost of insulin at $35 and lowering prescription drugs for everyone. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s economic agenda has failed us at every turn. Under Trump, Black unemployment skyrocketed, Black small businesses were left to suffer during the pandemic, and his signature tax scam lined the pockets of his Wall Street allies at the expense of the middle class. This November, the choice is clear: Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the only candidates in the race who will fight for Black families and our ability to build Black generational wealth.”

Yesterday, Vice President Harris further laid out her economic philosophy and pragmatic vision to help the middle class that will directly benefit Black families.

BET: “Harris, who has consistently promoted an “opportunity economy” focused on uplifting the middle class, is expected to further detail her economic policy platform. Her speech is anticipated to address several key issues, including the rising costs of food and groceries—a particularly significant concern for Black families and other marginalized communities.”

Black Enterprise: “Vice President Kamala Harris has announced her economic plans if she’s elected. In her detailed proposal, it is clear that Harris’ priorities aim to lower the living costs for middle- and lower-class Americans, make housing affordable, and give Americans relief from rising costs that impact their day-to-day lives, such as groceries and healthcare.”

Earlier this month, Vice President Harris announced a plan to help small businesses start, grow, and create jobs that will directly benefit Black-owned small businesses.

The Grio: “The Harris campaign announced that the vice president would also unveil new policies on Wednesday as part of her economic agenda. These include $5,000 to $50,000 in tax deductions for startup expenses for small businesses. Harris will also announce a goal of securing 25 million new small business applications in her first term if elected.

“Many of Harris’ economic policies announced so far directly align with the top concerns of Black voters, according to the Black Census, a 2023 survey of more than 200,000 Black voters conducted by Black Futures Lab”

Politico: “Kamala Harris rolled out a new plan for small business tax breaks, as the vice president looks to contrast her economic agenda with former President Donald Trump ahead of next week’s debate.

Harris’ proposal, released on Tuesday, calls for significantly expanding the tax deduction for start-up expenses from $5,000 to $50,000, while also setting the goal of 25 million new small-business applications during her first term, according to a Harris campaign official granted anonymity to describe details of the plan. The plan also proposes reducing barriers to getting occupational licenses and developing a standard tax deduction for small businesses. […]

The proposal’s focus on tax breaks for small businesses attempts to craft a contrast with Trump, who has called for lowering the corporate tax rate, as well as extending and expanding his 2017 tax law.”

In June, the Biden-Harris administration announced over 18 million new business applications had been submitted since they took office, and Black-owned small business creation is at its highest level in 25 years.

Statement from President Biden: “Today, my Administration announced over 18 million new business applications since I took office, each one an act of hope and confidence. We’ve had the three strongest years for new businesses on record and the small business boom that has powered our economic comeback continues. Since the pandemic, Black business ownership has more than doubled, Hispanic business ownership is up 40 percent, and women own a record share of businesses.

Small Business Administration: “Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the United States has experienced a historic small business boom being led by women and people of color, and FY23 furthered that trend with 11 percent more loans delivered to small businesses than in FY22. Black-owned small businesses are crucial to this monumental growth, with the rate of Black-owned small business creation at its highest level in 25 years.”

White House Fact Sheet: “The American Rescue Plan also includes a Small Business Opportunity Fund to provide growth capital to main street small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas, including minority-owned businesses”

Vice President Harris has helped to deliver more than $167 billion in student loan debt relief, which disproportionately affects Black Americans, helping to close the racial wealth gap.

CBS News: “The White House on Wednesday said it has approved $7.7 billion of student debt cancellation for 160,500 borrowers, part of its ongoing effort to provide relief after the Supreme Court last year blocked President Joe Biden’s plan for broad-based college loan forgiveness.

“With the latest round of forgiveness, the administration has erased a total of $167 billion in student loans for 4.75 million people, or about 1 in 10 student loan borrowers, the Department of Education said.”

ABC News: “About 12% of youth put student loan debt into their top three issues, while Black voters are twice as likely to list it in their top three, Kiesa said, citing a recent CIRCLE survey from November.”

Forbes: “How Biden Forgiving Another $9 Billion In Student Loan Debt Helps Close The Racial Wealth Gap”

“The burden of student loan debt has reached crisis levels, disproportionately affecting students of color and amplifying the racial wealth gap. Now, President Biden’s latest step will help 125,000 borrowers by erasing $9 billion in debt through existing programs. This debt load is not distributed evenly across populations, it falls disproportionately on students of color and their families who are actively trying to close the racial wealth gap.”

The child tax credit expansion in the Biden-Harris administration’s historic American Rescue Plan cut poverty rates for Black children in half in 2021.

PolitiFact: “Biden says expanded child tax credit sharply cut poverty for Black children; data shows he’s right

“Poverty among Black children in the United States dropped nearly half from 2020 to 2021, following the expansion of the child tax credit, according to U.S. Census Bureau supplemental poverty measure data.”

The Biden-Harris administration provided relief and support to help families stay in their homes during the pandemic and has worked to help make homeownership a reality for more Americans.

White House Fact Sheet: “President Biden’s American Rescue Plan has helped Americans, including Black Americans, stay in their homes by providing emergency rental assistance. Over 8 million households were served by Emergency Rental Assistance. As of June 2022, Black Americans were the largest group that received this help, representing more than 41% of aid recipients.  The Administration implemented a series of measures that protected homeowners from foreclosure, including a foreclosure moratorium, increased options for mortgage payment forbearance, enhanced loan modifications to resolve delinquencies. In addition, the ARP is helping struggling homeowners catch up with their mortgage payments and utility costs through the Homeowner Assistance Fund.”

Federal Housing Administration: “From Day One, the Biden-Harris administration has sought to make homeownership a reality for more Americans, especially those who have historically been shut out of such opportunities. While the market challenges we faced in fiscal year 2023 made our work more difficult, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) successfully expanded its role in making homeownership more affordable, more accessible, and fairer for all.”

Federal Housing Administration: “Similarly, FHA remained the

leader by share for mortgages supporting wealth-building for Black and Hispanic borrowers.”

New York Times: “The pilot program, part of the $6 trillion budget request planned to be released by President Biden on Friday, would pay for increased down payments from recipients of Federal Housing Administration loans, giving borrowers instant ownership equity comparable to that of their more affluent neighbors and white homeowners.”

Washington Informer: “The administration has budgeted $10 billion for the 2025 budget to help first generation homeowners to help nearly a half million families purchase a home.”

Let’s not forget that Trump’s MAGAnomics agenda left behind and failed Black business owners, students, and others.

New York Times op-ed: “Republicans argue that this will benefit small businesses. In fact, a large majority of small-business owners already have personal tax rates below 25 percent. This provision would aid a small group of developers, investors and other tycoons who work in professions or industries where it is relatively easy to set up pass-through businesses. Like, yes, Mr. Trump and his family, who make their money from one such industry: real estate.”

Vox: “Trump said this tax break was for small businesses. It’s giving $17 billion to millionaires this year”

Associated Press: “Education advocates say President Donald Trump’s budget contradicts his campaign pledge to make college more affordable with its proposed elimination of subsidized student loans and cuts in other programs that help students pay tuition. … When he accepted the Republican presidential nomination last year, Trump had said, ‘We’re going to work with all of our students who are drowning in debt to take the pressure off these people just starting out in their adult lives. Tremendous problem.’”

Press Release, Donald J. Trump for President: “Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down massive wins for the American people— halting Joe Biden’s unconstitutional student loan gimmick, restoring fairness to the college admissions process, and applying the strongest safeguards to First Amendment rights in a generation. One thing is clear: these wins were only made possible through President Trump’s strong nomination of three distinguished and courageous jurists to the Supreme Court.”

Brookings Institute: “Under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department oversaw and led the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which was slow to reach most Black-owned businesses. In 2021, Treasury Secretary Yellen announced that the department would invest $9 billion into the Emergency Capital Investment Program, a new initiative designed to provide capital to community development financial institutions and minority depository institutions—entities that have a better track record of working with the conditions surrounding Black borrowers.”

CNBC: “Paycheck Protection Program may have left minority business owners behind due to an implementation failure”

NPR: “But a new report from the Small Business Administration’s inspector general found that businesses owned by people of color may not have received loans as intended under the Paycheck Protection Program. There was no evidence, the report said, that the SBA told lenders to prioritize business owners in ‘underserved’ markets, including business owners of color — something the CARES Act had specifically instructed the SBA to do.”

🚨 Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson Won’t Commit to Accepting and Certifying November’s Election Results

In response to Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson refusing to commit to accepting this November’s election results, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“MAGA Mike Johnson was a key architect of Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the last election, and now he’s laying the groundwork to do the same thing all over again if Trump loses this November. Johnson has made it clear he has no regrets about his election denier track record and said he would do the ‘exact same thing today’ – but voters are having none of it, and will stop Trump and Johnson’s attacks on our democracy at the ballot box this November.”

NEW: Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson refused to commit to accepting this November’s election results.

Pablo Manríquez, Vanity Fair: “Mr. Speaker, do you commit to observing regular order in the certification process of the 2024 election, even if Harris beats Trump?”

Johnson: “Well of course – if we have a free, fair, and safe election, we’re gonna follow the Constitution.”

MSNBC: “On certifying election results, Speaker Johnson offers a big ‘if’”

Mediaite: “Mike Johnson Gives Conditional Answer When Asked If He’d Certify Kamala Harris Victory Over Trump”

Johnson has said he does not regret his role as a key “architect” of the effort to overturn the 2020 election results – and said he would do the “exact same thing today.”

Ryan Lizza, Politico: “One of the biggest sources of friction in the country is the aftermath of the 2020 election and January 6th. Do you have any regrets about the role that you played after the 2020 presidential election, including the amicus brief in support of Texas’ lawsuit challenging the election results?”

Johnson: “No, I don’t. … you asked me if I regret that? I don’t. I would do the exact same thing today if the circumstances were presented.”

Lizza: “So if you were speaker on January 6, 2021, would you have done anything differently?”

Johnson: “I don’t know. … I’m not sure what I would have done at that point.”

Washington Post: “Johnson played one of the most significant roles of any member of Congress in the effort to overturn the election.”

HuffPost: “Johnson, a former lawyer, led an amicus brief signed by over 100 Republican members of Congress backing a flawed Texas lawsuit that asked the Supreme Court to overturn the 2020 election. He also played a key role in crafting the rationale that many of his GOP colleagues used in justifying their votes to throw out the 2020 election results ― even just hours after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.”

Johnson urged supporters to “fight” on the morning of January 6 and continues to downplay the riot and prevent those who violently attacked law enforcement from being charged.

Johnson on January 6, 2021: “We MUST fight for election integrity, the Constitution, and the preservation of our republic! It will be my honor to help lead that fight in the Congress today.”

Louisiana Illuminator: “Johnson, who is close to Trump, did not acknowledge that the people who attacked the Capitol were the president’s supporters. He told a reporter that he thought there was a possibly a ‘big mix of people involved in this.’

“‘I don’t think President Trump is any more responsible for what happened at the Capitol today than the congressmen of Portland are responsible for what happened there,’ said Johnson, referring to some violence that erupted in Oregon over the summer. ‘What caused [the Capitol riot] is the same thing that has caused all the unrest over the last many months.’”

2021: Johnson voted against creating an independent commission to investigate the January 6 attack.

NBC News: “Speaker Mike Johnson says he’s blurring Jan. 6 footage so rioters don’t get charged”

Raw Story: “Mike Johnson says Jan. 6 rioters just ‘happened to be walking through the building’”

REMINDER: Donald Trump is still pushing baseless lies about his loss by over 7 million votes in the 2020 election.

Associated Press: “[Trump] is flooding the airwaves and his social media platform with distortions, misinformation and unfounded conspiracy theories about his defeat.”

NBC News: “Re-litigating the 2020 election, repeating false claims it was stolen and casting aspersions on the security of mail voting remain major fixtures for [Trump] on the stump. … He regularly refers to the 2020 election as ‘rigged’ on his social media channels.”

Trump continues to praise and promise pardons for the violent insurrectionists he rallied to storm the Capitol on January 6, calling them “hostages” and “patriots.”

Washington Post: “Trump vows pardons, government apology to Capitol rioters if elected”

Rachel Scott, ABC News: “140 police officers were assaulted [on January 6]. Their injuries included broken bones, at least one officer lost an eye, one had two cracked ribs, two smashed spinal discs, another had a stroke. Were the people who assaulted those 140 officers, including those I just mentioned, ‘patriots’ who deserve pardons?”

[Trump refuses to answer]

Scott: “But sir, my question is on those rioters who assaulted officers. Would you pardon those people?”

Donald Trump: “Oh absolutely I would. If they’re innocent, I would pardon them.”

Scott: “They’ve been convicted.”

Trump: “Those people were treated very harshly… nobody was killed on January 6. But I think that the people of January 6 were treated very unfairly… they were there to complain about an election, and you know it’s very interesting, the biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to.”

The Hill: “Trump describes imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters as ‘hostages’”

TIME: “Trump has sought to recast the insurrectionist riot as an act of patriotism. ‘I call them the J-6 patriots,’ Trump tells TIME. When asked whether he would consider pardoning every one of them, he says: ‘Yes, absolutely.’”

Trump: “January 6, it was the largest crowd I’ve ever spoken to. And they were there proud, they were there with love in their heart. That was an unbelievable — and it was a beautiful day.”

Trump has threatened political violence and warned of a “bloodbath” if he loses in November, and he is vowing to be a dictator on “day one” if he wins.

Associated Press: “Trump threatens to jail adversaries in escalating rhetoric ahead of pivotal debate”

Edward-Isaac Dovere, CNN: “Many people have lost American presidential elections over the last 230 years – Trump is the only one to say about violence if he loses ‘it depends.’”
