Trump-Vance Ticket On Gun Violence: “Fact of Life” That We “Have to Get Over”

After JD Vance called gun violence a “fact of life,” DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: no matter what Donald Trump and JD Vance say, tragedies like this do not need to be a ‘fact of life,’ and we don’t just have to ‘get over it’ when Americans, including young children, are violently murdered. But there’s another choice: Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are ready to stand up to the gun lobby to protect our communities. Trump and Vance have railed against commonsense reforms and federal bipartisan gun safety legislation that would protect innocent lives. As Trump and Vance put the gun lobby ahead of the American people, voters are ready to reject their dangerous and out-of-touch agenda in November.”

NEW: JD Vance called school shootings just a “fact of life” today after horrific gun violence.

Associated Press: “School shootings are a ‘fact of life,’ so the U.S. needs to harden security to prevent more carnage like the shooting this week that left four dead in Georgia, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said Thursday.”

Donald Trump has no shame — he told school shooting victims to “get over it,” touts his close ties to the NRA, and continues to bend to the gun lobby’s will at every turn.

Rolling Stone: “Trump on Iowa School Shooting: ‘Get Over It’”

“A day after a gunman killed a sixth grade student and wounded five other people at Perry High School northwest of Des Moines, Donald Trump returned to the state at a campaign event and told residents that they ‘have to get over it.’”

Trump: “There’s no bigger fan of the NRA [than me].”

NBC News: “Trump says mass shootings are not ‘a gun problem’ as 2024 GOP hopefuls pledge loyalty to the NRA”

New York Magazine: “After Taunting Republicans for Being Afraid of NRA, Trump Gives In to NRA”

Washington Post: “After latest shooting, Trump pushes Facebook ads ‘straight from the NRA playbook’”

Politico: “Former President Donald Trump on Friday addressed the National Rifle Association’s annual conference in Houston … just three days after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school.”

CNN: “A slew of 2024 GOP presidential hopefuls courted gun rights activists Friday at a National Rifle Association convention in Indianapolis that took place in the wake of mass shootings in Kentucky and Tennessee in recent days. Former President Donald Trump … attended the gathering.”

The NRA has spent tens of millions to support Trump’s campaigns — and Trump in turn has vowed to not go “up against them.”

Yahoo News: “The gun-rights group spent $54 million during the 2016 election cycle, including $30 million to help Donald Trump get elected president.”

Fortune: “For instance, in 2020, the NRA alone spent over $12 million campaigning against Biden and another $4.5 million in favor of Donald Trump.”

Trump: “I don’t think I’ll be going up against them. I really think the NRA wants to do what’s right.”

New York Times: “At the N.R.A.’s annual convention in 2017, Mr. Trump assured the group’s members, ‘You came through for me, and I am going to come through for you.’”

Vance counted gun violence among “fake problems,” and called efforts to address it “a huge distraction” – and he opposes commonsense gun safety reforms like expanded background checks and red flag laws while cozying up to the NRA.

NRA: “NRA Applauds President Trump’s Selection of Senator J.D. Vance as His Running Mate”

Washington Post: “The National Rifle Association praised Vance’s record on gun rights. Vance has rejected calls for tougher gun laws and dismissed a Democrat-led effort to ban bump stocks, which allow semiautomatic rifles to fire hundreds of bullets per minute, as ‘a huge distraction.’ In 2022, Vance said he favored abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which enforces federal gun laws.”

The Hill: “‘I think it’s a huge distraction,’ said Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is believed to be on Trump’s shortlist to be his running mate. ‘This is week three of Chuck Schumer focusing on fake problems instead of real problems.’”

NBC News: “‘I think that we have to ask ourselves: What is the real gun violence problem in this country, and are we legislating in a way that solves fake problems? Or solves real problems?’ Vance told reporters…

“Vance also said he was concerned the bill could ‘end up just inhibiting the rights of law-abiding Americans.’ Pressed about the 58 people who were killed in a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, he said: ‘The question is: How many people would have been shot alternatively? And you have to ask yourself the question: Will anyone actually not choose a bump stock because Chuck Schumer passes a piece of legislation?’”

The Guardian: “JD Vance ‘disrespecting the dead’ with bump stock remarks, Nevada senator says”

Vanity Fair: “Vance has come out against gun reform and blasted a Democratic effort to ban bump stocks. The NRA has praised Trump’s decision to make Vance his running mate.”

Vance: ‘The background check system is not the problem … the idea that expanded background checks is going to solve that problem is unfortunately not true.”

Vance: “None of these [commonsense gun safety reforms] would improve the gun violence problem in this country. All of them satisfy the urge to ‘do something’ without actually doing anything useful, at great cost to the rights of people who follow the law. Let’s take just one example, ‘red flag’ laws.”

2022: Vance was endorsed by the NRA.

Trump Postponed January 6 “Awards Gala” – But He Can’t Hide His Record Whitewashing the Attack on Our Capitol

In response to a “J6 Awards Gala” hosted at Donald Trump’s golf club scheduled for tonight being postponed as Trump continues to celebrate insurrectionists and promise them pardons, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“If you needed more proof that Donald Trump is still threatening our democracy, look no further than Trump happily agreeing to hand over his golf club to an awards gala meant to ‘pay tribute’ to the January 6 insurrectionists who violently attacked the Capitol. Now, Trump’s MAGA allies are scrambling to protect him as he continues to promise pardons for January 6 rioters, spews baseless lies about his 2020 election loss, and casts doubt on this November’s election results. Gala or not, Trump will be held accountable in November for his dangerous and undemocratic extremism and his Project 2025 plans to further attack our democracy.”

A fundraiser for January 6 rioters scheduled to be hosted tonight at Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf club was indefinitely postponed.

New York Times: “Fund-Raiser for Jan. 6 Rioters at Trump’s Golf Club Is Postponed”

“The event’s location, Mr. Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, N.J., highlighted the former president’s attempts to normalize the events of Jan. 6, including by often praising those who took part in the Capitol attack. … Even though the future of the event is now in doubt, it was in keeping with Mr. Trump’s persistent efforts to rewrite the history of Jan. 6.”

Trump continues to celebrate and promise pardons for January 6 insurrectionists, who he calls “hostages” and “patriots”…

Washington Post: “Trump vows pardons, government apology to Capitol rioters if elected”

Rachel Scott, ABC News: “140 police officers were assaulted [on January 6]. Their injuries included broken bones, at least one officer lost an eye, one had two cracked ribs, two smashed spinal discs, another had a stroke. Were the people who assaulted those 140 officers, including those I just mentioned, ‘patriots’ who deserve pardons?”

[Trump refuses to answer]

Scott: “But sir, my question is on those rioters who assaulted officers. Would you pardon those people?”

Donald Trump: “Oh absolutely I would. If they’re innocent, I would pardon them.”

Scott: “They’ve been convicted.”

Trump: “Those people were treated very harshly… nobody was killed on January 6. But I think that the people of January 6 were treated very unfairly… they were there to complain about an election, and you know it’s very interesting, the biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to.”

The Hill: “Trump describes imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters as ‘hostages’”

TIME: “Trump has sought to recast the insurrectionist riot as an act of patriotism. ‘I call them the J-6 patriots,’ Trump tells TIME. When asked whether he would consider pardoning every one of them, he says: ‘Yes, absolutely.’”

NBC News: “Former President Donald Trump promised Wednesday night that if he is elected he will pardon a ‘large portion’ of the people convicted of federal offenses for their participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.”

Trump: “January 6, it was the largest crowd I’ve ever spoken to. And they were there proud, they were there with love in their heart. That was an unbelievable — and it was a beautiful day.”

…while his running mate JD Vance downplays the violence on January 6.

The Hill: “JD Vance says he is ‘skeptical’ Pence’s life was in danger on Jan. 6”

Politico: “[Vance] downplayed the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, when Pence was forced to evacuate the building as rioters called for his hanging.”

Trump is still pushing lies about his loss by over 7 million votes in the 2020 election. Vance is right there with him – they are both casting doubt on this November’s results.

New York Times: “[Trump] has baselessly and publicly cast doubt about the fairness of the 2024 election about once a day, on average, since he announced his candidacy for president.”

Associated Press: “[Trump] is flooding the airwaves and his social media platform with distortions, misinformation and unfounded conspiracy theories about his defeat.”

NBC News: “Re-litigating the 2020 election, repeating false claims it was stolen and casting aspersions on the security of mail voting remain major fixtures for [Trump] on the stump. … He regularly refers to the 2020 election as ‘rigged’ on his social media channels.”

HuffPost: “[Vance] said he would accept a Biden win only if he considered the election to be legitimate. … Vance’s comments illustrate a new tactic by Republican lawmakers, who are now placing conditions on accepting election results.”

New York Times: “J.D. Vance Says He Would Accept the Election Results, With a Caveat”

Vance: “I think the entire post-2020 thing would have gone a lot better if there had actually been an effort to provide alternative slates of electors, and to force us to have that debate. I think it would’ve been a much better thing for the country. … [Trump] was trying to take a constitutional process to its natural conclusion.

“I think it would’ve been extraordinarily disappointing to a whole host of people that I care a lot about if Trump had just taken it [and conceded the 2020 election before January 6].”

Vance: “No real Republican with any credibility in the party is still blaming [Trump for January 6].”

ABC News: “JD Vance says [he] wouldn’t have certified 2020 race until states submitted pro-Trump electors”

New York Times: “[Vance] has said that, unlike Vice President Mike Pence in 2020, he would have helped Mr. Trump overturn the results, by accepting Trump electors that had not been elected by voters.”

Trump, who is vowing to be a dictator on “day one,” told voters they “won’t have to vote anymore” if he’s elected president.

The Atlantic: “Trump Says He’ll Be a Dictator on ‘Day One’”

Trump: “You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what – it will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore.”

Vance has no problem with the idea of Trump using the government to go after his political opponents — even as Trump echoes dictators and warns of a “bloodbath” if he loses in November.

Edward-Isaac Dovere, CNN: “Many people have lost American presidential elections over the last 230 years – Trump is the only one to say about violence if he loses ‘it depends.’”

NBC News: “Trump says there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election”

Kristen Welker, NBC: “Senator, if former President Trump were to win, if you were to be his vice president, would you support him appointing a special prosecutor to go after his political enemies, the Bidens?”

[…]

Vance: “Donald Trump is talking about appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Joe Biden for wrongdoing.

[…]

“I think what Donald Trump is simply saying is we ought to investigate the prior administration.”

Associated Press: “Trump declines to rule out abusing power to seek retribution if he returns to the White House”

Washington Post: “Trump calls political enemies ‘vermin,’ echoing dictators Hitler, Mussolini”

The Guardian: “Donald Trump says he will lock up his political enemies if he is president again.”

AFT President Randi Weingarten, Rep. Jahana Hayes and IDP Chair Rita Hart Slam Trump-Vance Project 2025 Agenda to Defund Public Education

Today, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes, and Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart spoke on Donald Trump and JD Vance’s extreme and unpopular Project 2025 agenda to gut public education. They called out Trump and Vance’s dangerous plans to eliminate the Department of Education, defund public schools, and reverse the Biden-Harris Administration’s student loan debt relief programs while rigging the economy for the ultra-rich.

Read highlights from the press call below:

  • “[Trump is] saying get rid of what the Department of Education does, and what is that? It’s helping our young kids — our youngest kids — get preschool through Head Start. It’s helping our kids in K-12, our kids who are neurodivergent, our kids who have disabilities, our kids who are poor, our kids who are in rural areas, our kids who need to have books and supplies and food and meals in order to actually have the engagement and the opportunities they need. He’s basically saying ‘get rid of all of that,’” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “That’s why I say: what Project 2025 does is take that ladder of opportunity. The thing that we say in America we want to do for all kids: to level the playing field, what he’s saying is ‘just get rid of all of it.’ That’s why we’re so angry about what he’s trying to do to young kids in America. To teachers in America.”
  • “This plan, this Trump-Vance Project 2025 plan, would eliminate two-thirds of the funding from Title I school districts. What I can tell you is that when you are a teacher, you don’t pick winners and losers. You meet children where they are. So this idea of eliminating the Department of Education, of taking away the funding for our students with disabilities — what happens to those kids? Children in this country are entitled to a free and appropriate public education, a high quality public education,” said Congresswoman Jahana Hayes. “Under the American Rescue Plan, we were able to inject $130 billion dollars into education, into public education, and in many areas that just backfilled years of disinvestment — just put schools back at zero because they had been underinvested for so long. Their facilities were so outdated. We have to build upon that momentum. We have to make education a priority in this country to make sure that the next generation of leaders are well prepared for what lies ahead.”

  • “Here in Iowa is a prime example of what education systems across America will look like if Trump and Republicans get their way. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Trump’s MAGA allies enacted legislation here that is siphoning taxpayer money from public schools into private schools – leaving public school students, particularly in our rural areas, with fewer opportunities and instead giving them to a select few. This is a system that Trump actually praised just a few weeks ago as a model for what he wants to see in every state across the country,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “It’s simple: If we want to make education accessible, create jobs that will give our children a future, and build an economy that works for everyone, we cannot let Donald Trump and JD Vance near the Oval Office. Vice President Harris and Governor Walz have committed their careers to supporting working families. They share our values and will make sure that our children have the opportunity to get ahead – from fully funding public education to putting more money in parents’ wallets to fuel opportunities for the entire family.”

ICYMI: Project 2025 Contributor Coming to Milwaukee to Tout Trump’s ‘Agenda 47’

Key Point: “Crowley, who will be in town for the ‘Team Trump Agenda 47 Policy Tour,’ was also listed as a contributor to Project 2025… Crowley is among those credited with contributing to a chapter on the U.S. Treasury Department… [Trump’s] platform overlaps with Project 2025’s proposals on such topics as illegal immigration and shutting down the Department of Education.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Project 2025 contributor coming to Milwaukee to tout Trump’s ‘Agenda 47’

By: Mary Spicuzza and Alison Dirr

  • Conservative commentator Monica Crowley is coming to Milwaukee today to tout former President Donald Trump’s economic policies.

  • Crowley, who will be in town for the “Team Trump Agenda 47 Policy Tour,” was also listed as a contributor to Project 2025.

  • The Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project was created by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation in conjunction with more than 100 conservative organizations, according to its website. Heritage was a sponsor of the July Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
  • “Project 2025 is Donald Trump’s dangerous and extreme plan to give him unprecedented power over Wisconsinites’ lives, so it’s no surprise he’s sending in one of the contributors to this plan to campaign for him in Milwaukee,” Kristi Johnston, the Wisconsin Democratic Coordinated Campaign rapid response director, said in a statement.

  • The policy blueprint calls for replacing civil service government employees with partisan appointees and eliminating the Department of Education, among other proposals.
  • Crowley is among those credited with contributing to a chapter on the U.S. Treasury Department.
  • And while Trump has tried to distance himself from it, writing on his social media platform Truth Social that he knows “nothing about Project 2025,” a July USA TODAY analysis found that at least 31 of the project’s 38 creators had connections with Trump’s administration.
  • And, his platform overlaps with Project 2025’s proposals on such topics as illegal immigration and shutting down the Department of Education, USA TODAY previously reported in a fact check.

No More Back to School with Project 2025: DNC Launches Ad Campaign Slamming Trump-Vance Project 2025 Agenda to Defund Public Schools

Digital ads to run in key battleground states, targeted to Americans searching for back to school supplies

As Americans across the country kick off another school year, the DNC is launching a new digital ad campaign to educate voters in key battleground states about the Trump-Vance ticket’s Project 2025 plans to defund public schools and slash investments in America’s children. As parents make back-to-school-related online searches in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, they’ll be served ads directing them to a new site that teaches a lesson about Donald Trump and JD Vance’s Project 2025 agenda that would gut federal support for public education, take resources away from our kids and teachers, and hurt working families while rigging the economy for the ultra-rich and big corporations.

Project 2025 would end the Department of Education, funnel taxpayer dollars out of public schools, slash investments for public schools serving children from low-income households, eliminate Head Start, reject free school meals for students in need, and reverse student loan debt relief efforts – all while gifting more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.

“As America goes back to school, parents across the country are ready to teach Donald Trump and JD Vance a lesson. Take it from someone who taught public school, you can’t threaten to defund public education and get away with it,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “The Trump-Vance ticket’s Project 2025 blueprint calls for ending the Department of Education, gutting investments in public schools. Public education is a cornerstone of America’s democracy, but Trump and Vance threaten to take us backwards with a Project 2025 agenda that is as extreme as it is unpopular – and that’s why voters will support Vice President Harris and former public school teacher Governor Walz this November.”

Vice President Harris’ Plan to Help Small Businesses Will Further the Latino Small Business Boom Started Under the Biden-Harris Administration

DNC Hispanic Media Director Marco Frieri released the following statement:

“Today, Vice President Harris put forward her proposal to support small businesses and invest in entrepreneurship. This is the latest of her plans to create an Opportunity Economy, which will ensure everyone has a chance to compete and succeed. Under President Biden and Vice President Harris leadership, the U.S. economy is growing at record rates, and Latino-owned small businesses are at the forefront – with Hispanic business ownership up 40 percent. Latino entrepreneurs are filing business applications at record rates, and the Biden-Harris administration is supporting this unprecedented wave of entrepreneurship with historic investments in small businesses and communities across the country. In stark contrast, the Trump-Vance administration would bring back the MAGAnomics agenda using his Project 2025 blueprint to continue hurting working families while bolstering big corporations.”

Today, Vice President Harris announced a plan to help small businesses start, grow, and create jobs that will directly benefit Latino-owned small businesses.

Politico: “Harris targets small business tax break in contrast with Trump’s corporate tax cuts”

“Kamala Harris rolled out a new plan for small business tax breaks, as the vice president looks to contrast her economic agenda with former President Donald Trump ahead of next week’s debate.

“Harris’ proposal, released on Tuesday, calls for significantly expanding the tax deduction for start-up expenses from $5,000 to $50,000, while also setting the goal of 25 million new small-business applications during her first term, according to a Harris campaign official granted anonymity to describe details of the plan. The plan also proposes reducing barriers to getting occupational licenses and developing a standard tax deduction for small businesses.

“The proposal’s focus on tax breaks for small businesses attempts to craft a contrast with Trump, who has called for lowering the corporate tax rate, as well as extending and expanding his 2017 tax law.”

Bloomberg: “Harris to Expand Small Business Tax Relief to Boost Startups”

“Harris also plans to initiate a small business expansion fund to enable community banks to cover interest costs when emerging enterprises are trying to expand, particularly in regions that have historically struggled to get investments. If elected, Harris will also pledge to ensure that one-third of federal contract dollars go to small businesses by expanding opportunities in rural areas and underserved communities.”

The Harris plan will continue the advancements made by the Biden-Harris administration, which brought about a record high 19 million new business applications filed as of June 2024.

Statement, Small Business Administration: “Since the start of the Biden-Harris administration, there have been 18.1 million new business applications with an average 443,000 filed each month – a rate over 90% faster than pre-pandemic averages. Having already achieved the first, second, and third strongest years of new business applications on record, President Biden’s economy remains on track for its fourth consecutive year of historic business filings. The U.S. economy has grown more under President Biden than at this point in any presidential administration in the last quarter century.”

U.S. Department of Treasury:Average monthly business applications were 50% higher in 2021-2023 than in 2018-2019, and nearly 25% of all new entrepreneurs in 2021 were Latino. There is evidence that the rise in business applications has resulted in a greater percentage of Latino and Black business owners, given that areas with a higher proportion of Latino and Black residents saw relatively larger increases in application rates in 2020.”

Axios: “The big picture: Despite disproportionate impact from the pandemic, Latino-owned businesses are among the fastest-growing in numbers and revenue, according to several studies and reports.”

Wall Street Journal: “One reason Latin American immigrants have maintained their entrepreneurial momentum is that many of the businesses they started are in services, food, and delivery, sectors that have experienced increased demand since the onset of the pandemic.”

The Biden-Harris Administration is overseeing the fastest creation rate of Hispanic-owned businesses in more than a decade, over 40% faster than pre-pandemic levels. And the share of families that owned a business increased by 9 percent between 2019 and 2022, with Black and Hispanic families seeing particularly large increases in business ownership.

White House Small Business Boom Report: “The share of Black households owning a business has doubled and the share of Hispanic individuals has increased by over 40% since before the pandemic, according to the Federal Reserve. This is the fastest pace of growth in business equity ownership for these groups over the past three decades.”

Small Business Administration: “Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the United States has experienced a historic small business boom being led by women and people of color, with 13.6 million new business applications filed since President Biden took office — a rate 65% faster than the pre-pandemic average. This small business boom has seen the fastest creation rate of Hispanic-owned businesses in more than a decade — over 20% faster than pre-pandemic levels.”

Statement from President Biden: “Since the pandemic, Black business ownership has more than doubled, Hispanic business ownership is up 40 percent, and women own a record share of businesses.”

White House Fact Sheet: “Entrepreneurs of color are particularly benefiting from the Biden-Harris Administration’s increased lending and investments in small businesses. Data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances shows that between 2019 and 2022, the share of families owning a business increased by 9%, with particularly large increases among Black and Hispanic households. The percent of Black households owning a business during this same period more than doubled — after falling between 2007 and 2019. These increases support wealth building in Black and Hispanic communities, as business owners report more wealth as compared to non-business owners in this survey. And under President Biden, we’ve achieved the fastest growth in Black business ownership in over 30 years.”

The Biden-Harris administration boosted lending to Latino small businesses.

Axios: “The number of federally-backed loans to Latino-owned small businesses has nearly doubled in two years, hitting a record $3 billion, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.”

“Latino-owned firms are among the nation’s fastest-growing small businesses, but a lack of access to capital, credit, and loans has prevented some of these businesses from scaling and growing.”

White House Fact Sheet: “The American Rescue Plan also includes a Small Business Opportunity Fund to provide growth capital to main street small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas, including minority-owned businesses”

U.S. Department of Treasury: “Through the Emergency Capital Investment Program (ECIP), the Treasury Department has invested $1.6 billion in Latino-designated minority depository institutions. In total, ECIP participant institutions received more than $8.5 billion in Treasury ECIP investments that may enable them to collectively increase lending in Latino communities by over $50 billion over the next decade.”

CNBC: “The Department of the Treasury estimates that Biden’s investments in community lenders will lead to a $50 billion increase in lending to Latino communities and a $80 billion rise for Black communities. A White House official noted before Wednesday’s event that Black small business ownership is growing faster than it has in 30 years and the creation rate of Latino small businesses is at a decade high.”

The Biden-Harris administration directed the Small Business Administration to help increase loans to Latino-owned small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program, while Trump left business owners of color behind.

Small Business Administration: “Early indications show program reforms and efforts to engage with communities authentically are working in meaningful ways. As of March 7, a comparison of the daily average rate of loans made during the exclusivity period and daily average rate ten days before the exclusivity period show loans to:

  • Minority-owned businesses up by 20%, or an additional 1,000 businesses accessing relief each day
  • Women-owned businesses up by 14%, or an additional 600 businesses accessing relief each day
  • Small businesses in rural areas up by 12%, an additional 1,000 businesses accessing relief each day”

Associated Press: “By changing the PPP program’s guidelines, the Biden administration was trying to prevent the pandemic from further widening the country’s racial wealth gap.

“Black Americans make up about 12% of the U.S. population, yet they control just 2% of the assets from private business ownership that are often key for ascending the economic ladder, according to the Federal Reserve. Just 4.3% of total U.S. household wealth belongs to Black Americans and 2.5% to Hispanic Americans, significantly below their share of the total U.S. population.”

NPR: “But a [2020] report from the Small Business Administration’s inspector general found that businesses owned by people of color may not have received loans as intended under the Paycheck Protection Program. There was no evidence, the report said, that the SBA told lenders to prioritize business owners in ‘underserved’ markets, including business owners of color — something the CARES Act had specifically instructed the SBA to do.”

Trump’s MAGAnomics tax scam overwhelmingly benefited the ultra-wealthy and big corporations while neglecting small businesses, and he wants to give yet another tax windfall to big corporations, threatening to explode the national debt by $1 trillion.

Washington Post: “Now GOP lawmakers and some of Trump’s economic advisers are considering more corporate tax breaks — which could expand the national debt by roughly $1 trillion over the next decade”

Vox: “Trump said this tax break was for small businesses. It’s giving $17 billion to millionaires this year.”

“If many average Americans aren’t noticing or loving the tax cut bill yet, it might be understandable — it benefits the wealthy by design. And a congressional report released this week shows that one specific new deduction for so-called ‘pass-through’ companies is heavily benefiting the rich. … The Republican tax bill cut the corporate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent and disproportionately benefits corporations and the wealthy.”

Bloomberg: “A perk pitched as a boon for mom-and-pop businesses in President Donald Trump’s tax law could shut out smaller real estate investors while benefiting the industry’s largest property developers. The Treasury Department released final rules recently detailing how owners of businesses such as limited liability companies and partnerships can claim as much as a 20 percent deduction.”

New York Times: “Republicans argue that this will benefit small businesses. In fact, a large majority of small-business owners already have personal tax rates below 25 percent. This provision would aid a small group of developers, investors and other tycoons who work in professions or industries where it is relatively easy to set up pass-through businesses. Like, yes, Mr. Trump and his family, who make their money from one such industry: real estate.”

Economic Policy Institute: “The TCJA overwhelmingly benefited the rich and corporations while overlooking working families”

Harris-Walz Small Business Plan Promises a New Way Forward for AANHPI Entrepreneurs

DNC Deputy National Press Secretary Nina Raneses released the following statement:

“Vice President Harris’ new small business plan will help ensure that every American has the chance to succeed — bolstering the small business boom our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander entrepreneurs are already experiencing under the Biden-Harris administration. By expanding tax relief for small businesses tenfold, cutting unnecessary red tape, and setting a goal of 25 million new business applications in her first term, Vice President Harris’ small business plan would be monumental for AANHPI entrepreneurs. Our communities won’t soon forget how Donald Trump’s MAGAnomics agenda prioritized greedy corporate executives and the ultra-wealthy while leaving AANHPI businesses behind, especially during the pandemic when they needed the help most. Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, and our AANHPI small business owners will continue to thrive thanks to the Harris-Walz small business plan.”

Vice President Harris is charting a new way forward for AANHPI entrepreneurs with a historic plan to support America’s small businesses.

Jonathan Lemire, MSNBC: “Kamala Harris is proposing a ten-fold increase in the small business tax deduction for startup costs, a new weapon in her arsenal as she vies with Donald Trump to show voters who can best assuage their anxieties about the economy”

Joey Garrison, USA Today: “Kamala Harris’ push to jump-start small businesses:

– expanding tax deduction for startup expenses from $5K to $50K

– measures to cut “red tape” to start small businesses such as time to file taxes

– goal of 25M new small biz applications in first term”

Jeff Stein, Washington Post: “New – Kamala Harris is proposing a $50K tax deduction for startup expenses (10X increase to current deduction)

New rollout includes:

– Incentives to get local govs 2 cut red tape

– Occupational licensing reform

– CDFI expansion

More econ policies coming”

Under the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration, AANHPI small businesses continue to thrive.

Chiling Tong, President and CEO of the National Asian Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneurship: “AAPI businesses have benefited from a stronger economy, with over 2.91 million AAPI owned businesses and counting, fueling job creation and economic growth in their communities.”

White House Fact Sheet: “Promoting Economic Opportunity for AA and NHPI Communities. By signing into law the historic American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, and CHIPS and Science Act implementing robust regulatory reform, the Biden-Harris Administration has led the most equitable economic recovery on record, creating more than 12 million jobs since coming to office and helping create new economic opportunities for all Americans, including AA and NHPI workers, small business owners, and entrepreneurs.”

White House Fact Sheet: “In FY23, the U.S. Small Business Administration backed 7,500 loans to AAPI-owned businesses, which total to more than $6.4 billion. That means total loans are up 44% under the Biden-Harris Administration, and total loan dollars are up 36%.”

“In January 2023, WHIAANHPI – in collaboration with the Small Business Administration, the National Asian / Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship, and federal, state, and local partners – launched a series of regional economic summits to connect AA and NHPI business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders directly with federal resources such as contracting and employment opportunities.”

Trump doesn’t care about small businesses or the hardworking Americans who run them — he only cares about himself and his wealthy donor friends.

New York Times Opinion: “Republicans argue that this [Trump and Republicans’ tax plan] will benefit small businesses.

Vox: “Trump said this tax break was for small businesses. It’s giving $17 billion to millionaires this year”

Trump wants to double down on his extreme MAGAnomics tax scam, threatening to line the pockets of the ultra-wealthy and big corporations while leaving AANHPI families behind.

Trump: “I will never let the Trump tax cuts … I will never let them be taken away.”

Trump: “You’re all people that have a lot of money … You’re rich as hell …We’re gonna give you tax cuts.”

Trump: “We will replace Biden’s tax hikes with the beautiful Trump tax cuts. You know, we have to extend the tax cuts.”

Trump on whether his second term tax policies would echo those of his first term: “Yes, and I’d do even more taxes.”

Washington Post: “The former president’s closest economic advisers are plotting an aggressive new set of tax cuts to push on the campaign trail and from the Oval Office if he wins a second term. Trump and his advisers have discussed deeper cuts to both individual and corporate tax rates that would build on his controversial 2017 tax law. … Trump’s advisers, though, have discussed proposals to make deeper cuts to the overall corporate tax rate, potentially to as low as 15 percent, or to use the revenue from the proposed tariffs to pay a dividend to U.S. households. Further cutting corporate taxes … would primarily benefit large firms.”

Bloomberg: “[Trump] intends to center his economic plans on extending and deepening the Republican tax cuts from 2017.”

Vanity Fair: “Donald Trump Wants to Give His Favorite Corporations Another Giant Tax Cut in a Second Term: Report”

When hate crimes against Asian Americans increased during the pandemic, Trump amped up his racist rhetoric against Asian American communities — and he left business owners of color behind at the same time.

NPR: “But a new report from the Small Business Administration’s inspector general found that businesses owned by people of color may not have received loans as intended under the Paycheck Protection Program. There was no evidence, the report said, that the SBA told lenders to prioritize business owners in ‘underserved’ markets, including business owners of color — something the CARES Act had specifically instructed the SBA to do.”

ABC News: “Trump’s ‘Chinese Virus’ tweet helped lead to rise in racist anti-Asian Twitter content: Study”

“The Asian American community has experienced a striking rise in incidents of hate since the onset of COVID-19, according to officials and advocates, and critics say the former president’s repeated use of ‘China Virus’ and other terms helped fuel an environment of hatred.”

“Researchers also found that the timing of the former president’s tweet was significant. The first time he used ‘ChineseVirus’ was March 16, 2020, and the following week saw an increase in anti-Asian hashtags and a rise in hate crimes.

NBC News: “Trump can’t claim ‘Kung Flu’ doesn’t affect Asian Americans in this climate, experts say”

CNBC: “‘We were scared’: Asian-owned small businesses devastated by double whammy of Covid and hate crime”

PBS NewsHour: “Asian-owned businesses say they’re reeling from hate and violence, operating in fear”

Boston College study: “‘Trump and conservative media had very thoroughly connected COVID to China specifically, so it was surprising to see a decrease in visits to other Asian restaurants as well,’ Krupenkin said. ‘We tested this more thoroughly and found that many Americans misidentify other Asian restaurants as Chinese, which likely explains the spillover effects we saw.’”

Reuters: “Asian-American businesses suffer outsized pandemic toll”

“Language barriers and a dearth of banking relationships made it difficult for some business owners to access government aid, even as they coped with an added layer of fear amid a surge in hate crimes linked to racist rhetoric that blames Asians for the coronavirus.”

Vice President Harris’ Plan to Help Small Businesses Will Continue the Black Small Business Boom Started Under the Biden-Harris Administration

DNC Director of Outreach Communications Tracy King released the following statement:

“Vice President Harris’ newly released small business plan, a major component of her plans to build an opportunity economy, will help continue and expand the Black small business boom that started under the Biden-Harris administration. President Biden and Vice President Harris have taken action to close the racial wealth gap and invest in the success of Black families, with the number of Black-owned businesses doubling since before the pandemic and  millions of new jobs created. A Harris-Walz administration will continue the fight to expand economic opportunities for working- and middle-class Black families while Donald Trump’s extreme and billionaire-friendly economic agenda will fail us at every turn. Make no mistake; Trump has already failed us before – from skyrocketing Black unemployment on his watch and failures in providing support to Black small businesses during the pandemic to lining the pockets of his Wall Street allies at the expense of the middle class with his signature tax scam. The contrast is clear: Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the only candidates in this race who will continue to grow the economy, prioritize new investments in Black communities, and fight for Black working families.”

Today, Vice President Harris announced a plan to help small businesses start, grow, and create jobs that will directly benefit Black-owned small businesses.

The Grio: “The Harris campaign announced that the vice president would also unveil new policies on Wednesday as part of her economic agenda. These include $5,000 to $50,000 in tax deductions for startup expenses for small businesses. Harris will also announce a goal of securing 25 million new small business applications in her first term if elected.

“Many of Harris’ economic policies announced so far directly align with the top concerns of Black voters, according to the Black Census, a 2023 survey of more than 200,000 Black voters conducted by Black Futures Lab”

Politico: “Kamala Harris rolled out a new plan for small business tax breaks, as the vice president looks to contrast her economic agenda with former President Donald Trump ahead of next week’s debate.

Harris’ proposal, released on Tuesday, calls for significantly expanding the tax deduction for start-up expenses from $5,000 to $50,000, while also setting the goal of 25 million new small-business applications during her first term, according to a Harris campaign official granted anonymity to describe details of the plan. The plan also proposes reducing barriers to getting occupational licenses and developing a standard tax deduction for small businesses. […]

The proposal’s focus on tax breaks for small businesses attempts to craft a contrast with Trump, who has called for lowering the corporate tax rate, as well as extending and expanding his 2017 tax law.”

In June, the Biden-Harris administration announced over 18 million new business applications had been submitted since they took office, and Black-owned small business creation is at its highest level in 25 years.

Statement from President Biden: “Today, my Administration announced over 18 million new business applications since I took office, each one an act of hope and confidence. We’ve had the three strongest years for new businesses on record and the small business boom that has powered our economic comeback continues. Since the pandemic, Black business ownership has more than doubled, Hispanic business ownership is up 40 percent, and women own a record share of businesses.

Small Business Administration: “Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the United States has experienced a historic small business boom being led by women and people of color, and FY23 furthered that trend with 11 percent more loans delivered to small businesses than in FY22. Black-owned small businesses are crucial to this monumental growth, with the rate of Black-owned small business creation at its highest level in 25 years.”

White House Fact Sheet: “The American Rescue Plan also includes a Small Business Opportunity Fund to provide growth capital to main street small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas, including minority-owned businesses”

Vice President Harris, with Biden, has presided over the creation of over 2.5 million jobs for Black workers and under their leadership, the Black unemployment rate fell below five percent for the first time ever on record.

White House Fact Sheet: Indeed, in April 2023, the unemployment rate for Black workers dropped to 4.8 percent, the lowest since [data collection] began. The latest data shows that unemployment rate for Black workers was 5.6 percent in April 2024 continuing the trend of low unemployment rate for this group by historical standards. For context, the average unemployment rate for Black Americans was about 8 percent from 2016 to 2020 and 11 percent from 2000 to 2015.

Axios: “The unemployment rate for Black Americans fell below 5% for the first time ever in April.

“Another all-time low: the gap between Black and white unemployment. It’s now 1.6 percentage points, down from 5.4 points in August 2020 and 12.1 points in January 1983.”

White House Fact Sheet: “The Biden-Harris administration has:

  • “Powered a historic economic recovery that created 2.6 million jobs for Black workers—and achieved both the lowest Black unemployment rate on record and the lowest gap between Black and White unemployment on record.
  • “Helped Black working families build wealth. Black wealth is up by 60% relative to pre-pandemic—the largest increase on record.”

Vice President Harris has helped to deliver more than $167 billion in student loan debt relief, which disproportionately affects Black Americans, helping to close the racial wealth gap.

CBS News: “The White House on Wednesday said it has approved $7.7 billion of student debt cancellation for 160,500 borrowers, part of its ongoing effort to provide relief after the Supreme Court last year blocked President Joe Biden’s plan for broad-based college loan forgiveness.

“With the latest round of forgiveness, the administration has erased a total of $167 billion in student loans for 4.75 million people, or about 1 in 10 student loan borrowers, the Department of Education said.”

ABC News: “About 12% of youth put student loan debt into their top three issues, while Black voters are twice as likely to list it in their top three, Kiesa said, citing a recent CIRCLE survey from November.”

Forbes: “How Biden Forgiving Another $9 Billion In Student Loan Debt Helps Close The Racial Wealth Gap”

“The burden of student loan debt has reached crisis levels, disproportionately affecting students of color and amplifying the racial wealth gap. Now, President Biden’s latest step will help 125,000 borrowers by erasing $9 billion in debt through existing programs. This debt load is not distributed evenly across populations, it falls disproportionately on students of color and their families who are actively trying to close the racial wealth gap.”

The child tax credit expansion in the Biden-Harris administration’s historic American Rescue Plan cut poverty rates for Black children in half in 2021.

PolitiFact: “Biden says expanded child tax credit sharply cut poverty for Black children; data shows he’s right

“Poverty among Black children in the United States dropped nearly half from 2020 to 2021, following the expansion of the child tax credit, according to U.S. Census Bureau supplemental poverty measure data.”

The Biden-Harris administration provided relief and support to help families stay in their homes during the pandemic and has worked to help make homeownership a reality for more Americans.

White House Fact Sheet: “President Biden’s American Rescue Plan has helped Americans, including Black Americans, stay in their homes by providing emergency rental assistance. Over 8 million households were served by Emergency Rental Assistance. As of June 2022, Black Americans were the largest group that received this help, representing more than 41% of aid recipients.  The Administration implemented a series of measures that protected homeowners from foreclosure, including a foreclosure moratorium, increased options for mortgage payment forbearance, enhanced loan modifications to resolve delinquencies. In addition, the ARP is helping struggling homeowners catch up with their mortgage payments and utility costs through the Homeowner Assistance Fund.”

Federal Housing Administration: “From Day One, the Biden-Harris administration has sought to make homeownership a reality for more Americans, especially those who have historically been shut out of such opportunities. While the market challenges we faced in fiscal year 2023 made our work more difficult, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) successfully expanded its role in making homeownership more affordable, more accessible, and fairer for all.”

Federal Housing Administration: “Similarly, FHA remained the

leader by share for mortgages supporting wealth-building for Black and Hispanic borrowers.”

New York Times: “The pilot program, part of the $6 trillion budget request planned to be released by President Biden on Friday, would pay for increased down payments from recipients of Federal Housing Administration loans, giving borrowers instant ownership equity comparable to that of their more affluent neighbors and white homeowners.”

Washington Informer: “The administration has budgeted $10 billion for the 2025 budget to help first generation homeowners to help nearly a half million families purchase a home.”

Let’s not forget that Trump’s MAGAnomics agenda left behind and failed Black business owners, students, and others.

New York Times op-ed: “Republicans argue that this will benefit small businesses.

Vox: “Trump said this tax break was for small businesses. It’s giving $17 billion to millionaires this year”

Associated Press: “Education advocates say President Donald Trump’s budget contradicts his campaign pledge to make college more affordable with its proposed elimination of subsidized student loans and cuts in other programs that help students pay tuition. … When he accepted the Republican presidential nomination last year, Trump had said, ‘We’re going to work with all of our students who are drowning in debt to take the pressure off these people just starting out in their adult lives. Tremendous problem.’”

Brookings Institute: “Under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department oversaw and led the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which was slow to reach most Black-owned businesses. In 2021, Treasury Secretary Yellen announced that the department would invest $9 billion into the Emergency Capital Investment Program, a new initiative designed to provide capital to community development financial institutions and minority depository institutions—entities that have a better track record of working with the conditions surrounding Black borrowers.”

CNBC: “Paycheck Protection Program may have left minority business owners behind due to an implementation failure”

JD Vance 🤝 Charlie Kirk: Anti-Choice Extremists Celebrating Trump’s Abortion Bans

In response to JD Vance campaigning with fellow anti-choice extremist Charlie Kirk in Arizona today, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“JD Vance is hitting the trail today with yet another anti-choice extremist who praised the Arizona Supreme Court as making ‘the right decision’ when it upheld a near-total abortion ban. Charlie Kirk wants abortion banned nationwide, and Donald Trump and Vance are plotting to do just that with or without Congress as part of their dangerous Project 2025 agenda. Women in Arizona and across the country are already suffering under Trump’s cruel abortion bans after he overturned Roe v. Wade. The American people won’t let the Trump-Vance ticket and their extreme far-right stooges like Kirk take their horrifying reality even further.”

JD Vance is campaigning with fellow anti-choice extremist Charlie Kirk, who praised the Arizona Supreme Court for upholding a Civil War-era law banning abortion before many women know they’re pregnant.

Kirk: “The Arizona Supreme Court made the right decision [to uphold a near-total abortion ban]. I want to build a movement where abortion … [does] not happen in the country”

Media Matters: “Charlie Kirk says the Arizona court decision banning abortion ‘should have been met with celebration’”

Vance celebrated when Donald Trump “proudly” overturned Roe v. Wade, paving the way for extreme abortion bans across the country — including Arizona’s ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

New York Times: “The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade overrode many state abortion laws, but after the court reversed that decision nearly two years ago, some states began once again to enact restrictions. In Arizona’s case, the Legislature passed a law in 2022 banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy.”

Arizona Attorney General’s Office: “Arizona law does not have exceptions for rape or incest.”

JD Vance: “I think that what I really think on – so first of all, the Dobbs decision, everybody knows, overruled Roe v. Wade – I think that was the right decision.”

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of Roe v. Wade”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “We broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly … But they’re working, and it’s working the way it’s supposed to.”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”

If given the chance, Trump and Vance would ban abortion nationwide as part of their dangerous Project 2025 agenda.

Rolling Stone: “Trump Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide: Report”

Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”

Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all options.”

CNN: “JD Vance said in 2022 he ‘would like abortion to be illegal nationally’”

During a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he ‘certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally’ and was ‘sympathetic’ to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion.”

Newsweek: “J.D. Vance Backs ‘National Standard’ for Abortions”

Daily Beast: “J.D. Vance suggested he would support prohibiting abortion even in cases of rape and incest—and dismissed those catalysts as ‘inconvenient.’”

New Republic: “On January 20, 2025, conservatives plan to resurrect a 150-year-old defunct law to ban abortion across the nation. This is not a secret plan—far from it. It’s part of the 180-Day Playbook produced by Project 2025, detailing priorities for an incoming conservative president on day one. These 900 pages lay out a Christian nationalist vision of the United States, one in which married heterosexuality is the only valid form of sexual expression and identity; all pregnancies would be carried to term, even if that requires coercion or death; and transgender and gender-nonconforming people do not exist…

“The playbook says the president should enforce a 150-year-old law, the Comstock Act, which right-wing groups see as a way to ban abortion nationally because it outlaws the use of the mail for the purposes of sending or receiving any object that could be used for an abortion.”

Vance: “I’ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.”

Axios: “[Project 2025] is undeniably a Trump-driven operation. The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee — one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer — is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.”

New York Times: “Roberts told me that he views Heritage’s role today as ‘institutionalizing Trumpism.’ This includes leading Project 2025, a transition blueprint that outlines a plan to consolidate power in the executive branch, dismantle federal agencies and recruit and vet government employees to free the next Republican president from a system that Roberts views as stacked against conservative power. The lesson of Trump’s first year in office, Roberts told me, is that ‘the Trump administration … simply got a slow start. And Heritage and our allies in Project 2025 believe that must never be repeated.’”

REALITY CHECK: Attacks on reproductive rights, like Trump and Vance’s anti-choice Project 2025 agenda to rip away reproductive freedoms, are wildly unpopular in Arizona and beyond.

Associated Press: “According to AP VoteCast, a broad survey of the electorate, 61% of Arizona voters in the 2022 midterm elections said abortion should be legal in most or all cases. […]

“Two-thirds of midterm voters in Arizona said the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade was an important factor in their vote for that election.

“About 6 in 10 Arizona voters in that election said they would favor a law guaranteeing access to legal abortion nationwide.”

Washington Post: “The polling, from CBS News and YouGov, shows striking margins in Arizona and Florida for enshrining abortion rights into those states’ constitutions. That position leads 65 percent to 21 percent in Arizona.”

USA Today: “Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.”

Axios: “Record share of U.S. voters back abortion rights and will vote on it: Gallup”

NBC News: “Abortion rights have won in every election since Roe v. Wade was overturned”

Axios: “Most Americans support abortion access one year after Roe v. Wade: poll”

CNN Poll: “About two-thirds (65%) oppose the 2022 Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and 34% approve, numbers that have remained effectively unchanged in CNN’s polling across the nearly two years since the ruling. Those who strongly disapprove of the decision continue to outnumber those who strongly approve by a more than 2-to-1 margin.

“A 69% majority who disapprove of overturning Roe, including 82% of those who strongly disapprove, say that federal politicians should work to pass laws ensuring national abortion access.”

Axios: “There’s widespread support for letting women obtain drugs for medication abortion from their doctor or a clinic, with 72% supporting — including half of Republicans.”

FACT CHECK: Trump-Vance Ticket Stands Against the PRO Act And For an Anti-Worker Project 2025 Agenda

Given that JD Vance famously runs his own X account, we wanted to provide a few feedback notes for him to make sure his Labor Day post was accurate:

HERE’S THE FACTS: Donald Trump was one of the most anti-worker and anti-union presidents in American history – and his running mate JD Vance stands firmly against the PRO Act, the “holy grail” of the labor movement to protect unions.

Politico: “Vance has consistently opposed the PRO Act, the ‘holy grail of pro-union labor reform’ that organized labor and its allies on the Hill have been fighting for over two years to get passed. … Vance’s skepticism of the PRO Act is part of a more fundamental skepticism that he harbors toward organized labor.”

Fast Company: “Vance also voted in favor of a resolution to strike down the NLRB’s updated joint-employer rule, which would have given workers more leverage when organizing at companies—like Amazon—that rely heavily on third-party contractors, by forcing both employers to participate in labor negotiations.”

Trump: “I know the unions. They’re dues-sucking people. They just want their dues and they couldn’t care less.”

New York Times: “Does [Trump] support unions? He has had ‘great success’ in New York building with unions and also in Florida without unions. ‘If I had my choice,’ he said, ‘I think I’d take it without.’”

Associated Press: “During Trump’s presidency, the National Labor Relations Board reversed several key rulings that made it easier for small unions to organize, strengthened the bargaining rights of franchise workers and provided protection against anti-union measures for employees.

“The Supreme Court’s conservative majority — including three justices that Trump nominated — overturned a decades-old pro-union decision in 2018 involving fees paid by government workers. The justices in 2021 rejected a California regulation giving unions access to farm property so they could organize workers.”

Trump recently celebrated firing striking workers, and Vance shamelessly defended his comments.

Newsweek: “Donald Trump Cheers Elon Musk Over Firing Workers: ‘You’re the Greatest!’”

Politico: “Vice presidential candidate JD Vance defended Donald Trump’s comments about firing striking workers during a rally in Michigan.”

New Republic: “J.D. Vance Makes Huge Mistake Trying to Defend Trump’s Workers Comment”

The Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda would raise taxes for the middle class while gifting tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and threatening to supercharge inflation.

Center for American Progress: “Project 2025’s Tax Plan Would Raise Taxes on the Middle Class and Cut Taxes for the Wealthy”

“In [Project 2025], far-right extremist plans are outlined that raise taxes on low- and middle-income households to finance tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations. Project 2025’s tax plan includes an ‘intermediate tax reform’ that includes changes to tax brackets and corporate tax cuts that would shift the tax burden toward middle-income households …

“The shift toward a flat consumption tax while eliminating income taxes would lead to an average $5,900 tax increase for the middle 20 percent of households and an average $2 million tax cut for the top 0.1 percent. … Project 2025 does not stop at cutting taxes for wealthy individuals; it also proposes an array of tax cuts for corporations. … This would amount to a $24 billion tax cut for the Fortune 100, the 100 largest companies in America.”

CBS News: “Millions of low- and middle-class households would likely face significantly higher taxes under the Project 2025’s proposals.”

New York Times: “Senator JD Vance of Ohio, former President Donald J. Trump’s running mate, denied in an interview with NBC News on Sunday that tariffs had caused higher costs for Americans, as economists have documented.”

Vance on Trump’s plan that would raise tariffs and raise costs for hardworking Americans: “This is a fascinating proposal and we could talk for a while about it.”

Project 2025: “The corporate income tax rate should be reduced to 18 percent.”

Vance: “I’ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.”

Axios: “Sixteen Nobel prize-winning economists are jumping into the presidential campaign with a stark warning: Former President Trump’s plans would reignite inflation and cause lasting harm to the global economy if he wins in November.”

Wall Street Journal: “A drumbeat of reports from Wall Street economists have warned that Trump’s plans could substantially slow economic growth while driving up consumer prices.”

The Atlantic: “Trump’s Plan to Supercharge Inflation”

Washington Post: “Trump and his advisers have discussed deeper cuts to both individual and corporate tax rates that would build on his controversial 2017 tax law … Further cutting corporate taxes … would primarily benefit large firms.”

Trump’s failed economic agenda resulted in broken promises, a skyrocketing deficit, and new incentives for companies to ship jobs overseas.

Vance: “The left attacked Donald Trump for those tax cuts said they would make the deficit worse when in reality we took in more revenue because the government got out of the way on the regulatory side and the tax cuts spurred a lot of growth which means more people working, which meant more economic production which meant the entire economy was healthier … I think that we have a pretty common sense regulatory and tax agenda.”

New York Times: “The 2017 corporate tax cuts signed into law by Mr. Trump have not increased government revenue … In fact, they have had the opposite effect.”

Washington Post: “Trump promised this Wisconsin town a manufacturing boom. It never arrived.”

The Guardian: “Donald Trump’s $1.5tn tax cuts have helped billionaires pay a lower rate than the working class for the first time in history.”

CBS News: “Two years after Trump tax cuts, middle-class Americans are falling behind”

Washington Post Analysis: “One of President Donald Trump’s lesser-known but profoundly damaging legacies will be the explosive rise in the national debt that occurred on his watch. The financial burden that he’s inflicted on our government will wreak havoc for decades, saddling our kids and grandkids with debt. The national debt has risen by almost $7.8 trillion during Trump’s time in office. … The growth in the annual deficit under Trump ranks as the third-biggest increase, relative to the size of the economy, of any U.S. presidential administration.”

Washington Post: “Trump promised ‘America First’ would keep jobs here. But the tax plan might push them overseas.”
