ICYMI: CNBC: Small-Dollar Donor Fatigue, Major Donor Hesitation Drives Trump Campaign Cash Crunch

Key Point: “[T]here may not be much that the former president or his campaign can do to win back these key donors, the sources explained. The drop in Trump’s small-dollar contributors could be [a] significant obstacle as the former president faces the well-funded incumbent president, Democrat Joe Biden.”

CNBC: Behind Trump’s campaign cash crunch: Small-dollar donor fatigue, major donor hesitation

By: Brian Schwartz

  • Since late last year, members of Trump’s team have been warned by Republican Party advisors that their small-dollar donor base could be shrinking, said the sources, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal campaign matters. Some have even been told there may not be much that the former president or his campaign can do to win back these key donors, the sources explained.
  • In January of this year, Trump’s campaign reported raising around $3 million from small-dollar donors, according to data from OpenSecrets. This may sound like a lot of money, but consider that Biden’s political operation raised nearly $2 million in just one day, Feb. 29, according to a campaign spokesman for the president.
  • The drop in Trump’s small-dollar donations is magnified by a second problem: Many wealthy Republican donors have yet to commit to giving millions of dollars toward a pro-Trump political action committee, or to using their extensive networks to raise money for the campaign, according to people familiar with the matter.
  • Beyond Trump-specific entities, some donors are also hesitant to fund the Republican National Committee, or a newly created joint fundraising committee that will raise money for the RNC, Trump’s campaign and dozens of state GOP parties, according to people briefed on the matter. Their reluctance stems, in part, from concerns that the RNC will use the money not to help elect Republicans, but to pay for Trump’s extensive legal fees, sources said.
  • Earlier this year, Trump threatened to blacklist Haley donors from his campaign. “Anybody that makes a ‘Contribution’ to [Haley] from this moment forth, will be permanently barred from the MAGA camp. We don’t want them, and will not accept them,” he wrote on Truth Social Jan. 24. But the threat only made it that much harder for Trump’s campaign to recruit former Haley donors to the team, some of whom they spoke to as recently as March 4. So far, few of them have made the leap from Haley’s camp to Trump’s.
  • The previous Haley fundraising advisor also described how the CEO of a major investment advisory firm told him they did not want to give to Trump or the RNC, out of concern that being publicly associated with the former president would be embarrassing.

DNC Statement on Trump’s Vile, Antisemitic Attacks on Jewish Voters

In response to Donald Trump claiming any Jewish voter who votes for Democrats “hates their religion” and “should be ashamed of themselves,” DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is the one who should be ashamed of himself: He dines with neo-Nazis and white supremists while parroting hateful demagogues on the campaign trail. He even reportedly claimed Hitler ‘did some good things.’ Jewish Americans deserve better than the appalling, offensive attacks Trump continues to launch against the Jewish community.”

WATCH: Donald Trump said any Jewish American who doesn’t vote for him “hates their religion” and “should be ashamed of themselves.”

Trump: “Any Jewish person who votes for Democrats hates their religion, hates Israel, and should be ashamed of themselves.”

Trump has reportedly said “Hitler did some good things,” frequently praises dictators, and has parroted extreme rhetoric uttered by the likes of Hitler and Mussolini.

CNN: “Trump allegedly reserved some of his most unnerving praise for Hitler, who led Nazi Germany during World War II. … ‘[Trump] said, ‘Well, but Hitler did some good things.’

“Trump’s admiration for Hitler went further than the German leader’s economic policies, according to Kelly. Trump also expressed admiration for Hitler’s hold on senior Nazi officers. Trump lamented that Hitler, as Kelly recounted, maintained his senior staff’s ‘loyalty,’ while Trump himself often did not.”

Washington Post: “Trump calls political enemies ‘vermin,’ echoing dictators Hitler, Mussolini”

Axios: “Why it matters: Some historians have compared Trump’s dehumanizing language — including his claim that undocumented immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’ — to the rhetoric of fascist dictators like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.”

Trump has a yearslong history of embracing antisemitism.

CNN: “Trump uses anti-Semitic tropes to again criticize Jewish Americans”

“Former President Donald Trump, in a newly released interview, claimed that Jewish Americans ‘either don’t like Israel or don’t care about Israel,’ while also suggesting that evangelical Christians ‘love Israel more than the Jews in this country.’”

“Trump’s comments are the latest in a series of controversial remarks he has been known to make about Jewish Americans. During his first campaign for president, Trump delivered a speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition that was rife with anti-Semitic stereotypes. More recently, he told conservative radio host Ari Hoffman that ‘Israel literally owned Congress…10 years ago, 15 years ago… and today it’s almost the opposite.’”

HuffPost: “Donald Trump’s Closing Ad Has Anti-Semitic Overtones”

CNN: “Trump complains American Jews don’t appreciate his moves on Israel, drawing criticism”

Trump kicked off his 2024 campaign by rubbing shoulders with white nationalist and antisemite Nick Fuentes – and Trump has since doubled down on his decision to dine with Fuentes, refusing to disavow Fuentes’ hate-filled stances.

CNN: “Trump hosted Holocaust denier at Mar-a-Lago estate during visit with Kanye West, a week after announcing 2024 run”

Axios: “Former President Trump dined and conversed with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday night, according to two sources familiar with the matter. … Fuentes, who frequently promotes racist and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, had been spotted with Ye at Mar-a-Lago, but reports erroneously suggested he did not have dinner with the former president.”

The Guardian: “Donald Trump repeatedly refused to disavow the outspoken antisemite and white supremacist Nick Fuentes after they spoke over dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort. … Trump ultimately made clear that he fundamentally did not want to criticise Fuentes.”

MAGA Republicans Stand by Their Man Even When He  Promises a “Bloodbath” if He Loses

In response to MAGA Republicans remaining silent and even defending Donald Trump promising a “bloodbath” if he loses, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has spent years threatening and defending political violence, and no one should know better how dangerous he is for our democracy than members of Congress who were in the United States Capitol on January 6. Once again, Trump’s MAGA allies are turning a blind eye as Trump promises a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses. This is the same man who has repeatedly pledged to pardon violent insurrectionists who stormed our Capitol, applauded ‘very fine people’ at the white supremacist Charlottesville rally, and constantly praises brutal dictators. Republicans will try to hide behind weak excuses, but their silence and refusal to condemn Trump’s appalling and violent rhetoric speaks volumes with voters, who will reject Trump and the GOP’s dangerous extremism in November.”

After Donald Trump promised a “bloodbath” if he loses in November…

Trump: “If I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the whole- that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”

… MAGA Republicans once again quickly rushed to his defense.

Politico: “Reaction to Trump’s speech: When is ‘a bloodbath’ not a bloodbath?”

“Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) also accepted the interpretation of Trump’s ‘bloodbath’ as pertaining to the American auto industry.”

“Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), speaking on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ also said he was dubious about the uproar over Trump’s language Saturday. …  Cassidy said the press must bear some blame for interpreting Trump’s remarks in the worst possible light.”

Trump is once again facing intense criticism for his extreme and dangerous rhetoric.

NBC News: “Trump says there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election”

Politico: “Trump says country faces ‘bloodbath’ if Biden wins in November”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says There Will Be a ‘Bloodbath’ and Elections Will End if He Isn’t Reelected”

New York Times: “Trump Defends His Warning of a ‘Blood Bath for the Country’”

Trump continues to praise and embrace violent January 6 rioters – including calling them “hostages” and “patriots” and vowing to pardon “a large portion” of those who attacked our Capitol.

Newsweek: “Donald Trump Salutes Jan. 6 ‘Hostages’ at Ohio Rally”

Business Insider: “Then-President Donald Trump didn’t want to specifically call for the Justice Department to prosecute January 6 rioters or forcefully condemn those who stormed the Capitol as unrepresentative of the MAGA movement.”

Washington Post: “No, Trump did not order 10,000 troops to secure the Capitol on Jan. 6”

The Hill: “Trump describes imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters as ‘hostages’”

Washington Post: “Trump vows pardons, government apology to Capitol rioters if elected”

NBC News: “Former President Donald Trump promised Wednesday night that if he is elected he will pardon a ‘large portion’ of the people convicted of federal offenses for their participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.”

Washington Post: “Former president Donald Trump on Thursday praised and embraced a woman convicted of defying police orders on the U.S. Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021. … Trump has steadily escalated his advocacy for people charged in the Capitol riot, including by pledging to pardon them if he returns to the White House, praising them as patriots, participating in a recording with Jan. 6 prisoners singing the national anthem, and playing it at his first rally of the 2024 campaign last month.”

Trump: “January 6, it was the largest crowd I’ve ever spoken to. And they were there proud, they were there with love in their heart. That was an unbelievable — and it was a beautiful day.”

NBC News: “Trump spoke at a fundraiser for Jan. 6 defendants”

Here’s “What the Hell … You Have to Lose” If Trump Regains Power

After another awful week of headlines for his campaign, Donald Trump is now doubling down on his extremely unpopular MAGA agenda by boldly asking the question: How do I once again remind people just how bad things could be under a Trump second term?

Or, in his words: “What the hell do you have to lose?”

But since he asked, here’s just some of “what the hell” you could lose if Trump gets a second term:

Access to health care

Women’s reproductive freedom

Democracy.

Manufacturing jobs

Jobs in general

Social Security and Medicare benefits

Lower drug prices.

The ultra-wealthy paying their fair share

Gun violence protections

Critical infrastructure funding.

Global stability

The world’s largest climate investment.

Trump on the ACA: Donald Trump Wants to “Terminate” Affordable Health Care for Millions of Americans

In response to Donald Trump’s calls to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“After years of trying — and failing — to repeal the Affordable Care Act as president, Donald Trump is running on a dangerous plan to ‘terminate’ health care for millions of Americans. If Trump gets his way, he’d kick millions of people who rely on the ACA off their health care coverage and rip away protections for as many as 135 million Americans with preexisting conditions — all while lining the pockets of Big Pharma. Here’s a reality check for Trump: The American people want access to affordable health care, and they’ll reject his extreme agenda come November.”

Trump is running on an agenda to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act. But don’t just take it from us — he’s told the 40 million hardworking Americans who rely on the ACA exactly what he plans to do.

Daily Beast: “Trump Revives Plan to Dismantle Obamacare if Elected in 2024”

NBC: “Trump, by contrast, stood by his support for a lawsuit headed to the Supreme Court that seeks to invalidate Obamacare. The justices will hear the case one week after Election Day.

I would like to terminate Obamacare, come up with a brand new, beautiful health care,’ Trump said at the debate, which was moderated by NBC News’ Kristen Welker.”

The Hill: “In a Truth Social post, the leading GOP presidential candidate claimed he’s ‘seriously looking at alternatives’ to replace ObamaCare, and that the failure to repeal the health law in 2017 while he was in office was ‘a low point for the Republican Party.’”

Reality check: Repealing the ACA is deeply unpopular. If Trump wins, millions of Americans who rely on the ACA to get the health care they need could be at risk of losing coverage.

Washington Post: “But what’s clear is that an effort to ‘terminate’ Obamacare is not something Americans are pining for. Not only were the GOP’s efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare during Trump’s term historically unpopular, but the law also appears to have gotten more popular since then. … And when politicians talk of ending health insurance for tens of millions of Americans, dropping coverage of preexisting conditions and cutting Obamacare’s Medicaid funding, things get even dicier.”

KFF Poll: 64% believe it is “very important” insurance companies continue to be prohibited from charging sick people more – including 55% of Republicans.

NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll: Eight out of 10 U.S. adults say all Americans have a basic right to health care coverage.

Bryan Bennett: “Per our October @NavigatorSurvey research, repealing the ACA (and January 6) remain the top concerns about Trump’s first term as president”

Repealing the ACA would strip away protections for as many as 135 MILLION people with preexisting conditions — and empower insurance companies to deny coverage to people who need it most.

Center for American Progress: “According to new estimates from the Center for American Progress, 135 million people under age 65, or about half of nonelderly people, have a preexisting condition that an insurer could use to discriminate against them if they ever sought coverage through the individual market in the absence of ACA protections.”

KFF Poll: 72% believe it is “very important” the ACA provision protecting those with preexisting conditions stay in place – including 62% of Republicans.

As a reminder, Trump spearheaded efforts to repeal the ACA as president.

NBC News: “Trump approved a surprise decision to push for the complete elimination of the Affordable Care Act in the courts. If it succeeds, millions of Americans will lose their private insurance or Medicaid coverage and the health care system would be thrown into chaos.”

NPR: “The very day President Trump was sworn in — Jan. 20, 2017 — he signed an executive order instructing administration officials ‘to waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay’ implementing parts of the Affordable Care Act, while Congress got ready to repeal and replace President Obama’s signature health law.”

Trump’s MAGA minion Mike Johnson is railing against providing affordable health care for hardworking Americans, including voting against the Inflation Reduction Act, which is lowering the cost of prescription drugs and capping the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare at $35 a month.

Press Release, Office of Congressman Mike Johnson: “U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson joined 11 other freshman members of Congress in a letter published Tuesday by Fox News urging the U.S. Senate to act on repealing the Affordable Care Act.”

The Hill: “As chair of the conservative Republican Study Commission, he has backed health care proposals that the GOP has espoused for years, including a repeal of the Affordable Care Act.”

Daily Beast: “Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), a member of House GOP leadership, said ‘I assume’ Republicans would move to repeal [the Inflation Reduction Act], but indicated it was still early.”

REALITY CHECK: Trump Said He Wants to Gut Social Security and Medicare After Pushing Cuts Every Year He Was in Office

In response to Donald Trump shamelessly trying to deflect from his own words and his record of coming after Social Security and Medicare, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“When Donald Trump said ‘there is a lot you can do’ to cut Social Security and Medicare, the American people heard him loud and clear. His record speaks for itself: Trump pushed cuts to these critical hard-earned benefits for our seniors every single year he was in office, and now he’s running on the same extreme and unpopular MAGA agenda that is threatening the pocketbooks of millions of Americans. If Trump gets the chance, he’ll gut Social Security and Medicare – and that’s why voters will once again reject him this November.”

Donald Trump said THIS WEEK that “there is a lot you can do” to cut Social Security and Medicare – programs that millions of American families rely on.

Joe Kernen, CNBC: “Have you changed your outlook on how to handle entitlements, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid?”

Trump: “So first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.”

Vox: “Trump just opened the door to Social Security cuts. Take him seriously.”

CNN: “Trump suggests he’s open to cuts to Medicare and Social Security after attacking primary rivals over the issue”

NBC News: “Trump floats ‘cutting’ retirement spending, drawing quick pushback from Biden”

Forbes: “Trump Floats ‘Cutting’ Spending On Entitlements Like Social Security And Medicare”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Floats Cuts to Social Security and Medicare”

Trump owns his extreme record of proposing cuts to Medicare and Social Security programs in EVERY SINGLE ONE of his budgets.

Washington Post: “His avowed stance, however, is at odds with Trump’s own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.”

Vox: “Trump said he wouldn’t cut Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. His 2020 budget cuts all 3.”

Trump’s FY18, FY19, FY20, and FY21 budgets each proposed billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security programs.

2019 and 2020: Trump proposed budgets that included hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare.

Trump has promised to try to cut Social Security and Medicare in a second term in office – including threatening the programs’ financial standing by promising to permanently eliminate the taxes that fund both programs.

National Review: “Speaking with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump was asked whether he would cut entitlements at some point. ‘Will entitlements ever be on your plate?’ asked interviewer Joe Kernen. ‘At some point they will be,’ Trump responded. ‘At the right time, we will take a look at that. You know, that’s the easiest of all things [to cut].’”

CNN: “Trump now says he’s open to entitlement cuts, including Medicare”

Mediaite: “During a Fox News town hall, President Donald Trump promised to cut entitlements like Medicare and Social Security if he were to win a second term. … ‘But if you don’t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,’ town hall co-moderator Martha MacCallum interjected, alluding to social safety programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. ‘Oh, we’ll be cutting,’ Trump rushed to confirm.”

Washington Post: “President Trump pledged on Saturday to pursue a permanent cut to the payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare if he wins reelection in November, a hard-to-accomplish political gambit that some experts see as a major headache for the future of the country’s entitlement programs.”

Trump: “If we win … the payroll tax will be rescinded.”

CNN: “Eliminating the payroll tax could deplete the Social Security trust fund within three years if there’s no alternative source of revenue, according to the agency’s chief actuary.”

Associated Press: “Trump, in effect, has proposed a dramatic restructuring of how Social Security is financed by not relying on the payroll tax as a dedicated source, but instead by tapping the general fund. … The risk is that the loss of a dedicated funding source could destabilize an anti-poverty program that provides payments to roughly 65 million Americans. It also could force people to cut back on the spending that drives growth so they can save for their own retirement and health care needs if they believe the government backstop is in jeopardy. … It is highly unlikely that economic growth would be enough to offset the loss of the payroll tax. Indeed, Trump suggested that his 2017 income tax cuts would propel economic growth as high as 6% annually. That never happened.”

Trump has made calls to privatize Social Security and even praised Republicans as they pushed plans to end Medicare as we know it.

CNN: “Trump previously backed policies on Social Security for which he’s now attacking DeSantis, calling the program a ‘Ponzi scheme’”

“Former President Donald Trump once backed raising the retirement age to 70 and called for privatizing Social Security which he called a ‘Ponzi scheme’ – two positions he has hammered Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for supporting as a former member of Congress and congressional candidate. … but a CNN KFile review found Trump himself also once praised Ryan on Medicare, along with the 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, without praising their specific policy proposal, which called for similar changes to Ryan’s plan.”

Trump and MAGA Republicans’ plan to gut Social Security and Medicare is highly unpopular with Americans across the political spectrum.

Fox News: “Fox News Poll: 71% choose funding Social Security, Medicare over budget cuts”

Sahil Kapur, NBC News: “Digging deeper into this @FoxNews finding. Support for funding entitlements like Social Security & Medicare over reducing deficits is overwhelming with the GOP base:

Republicans 59-38%

Trump voters 59-37%

Conservatives 60-36%

Rural voters 70-26%

White non-college voters 73%-24%”

CNN: “Nearly 67 million Americans have received monthly Social Security benefits this year, and more than 66 million people are enrolled in Medicare. Polling shows little support for major changes to the programs themselves to help shore up their finances.

“A March CNN/SSRS poll of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, for instance, found that 59% said it was ‘essential’ that the GOP nominee for president ‘pledges to maintain Social Security and Medicare as they are.’”

Associated Press: “Most oppose Social Security, Medicare cuts: AP-NORC poll”

Axios: “Nearly 9 in 10 Americans say they oppose reducing spending on Social Security or Medicare, according to new polling from our Axios-Ipsos Two Americas Index.”

ATTN House GOP: Here Are Some Things To Figure Out on Your Retreat

Between losing elections, “panic” over resignations, and flaming out on their own political stunts, we figured Speaker Mike Johnson might not have enough time to set the agenda for today’s House GOP retreat — so we put one together for him.

Here’s a list of things House Republicans need to figure out:

#1: How to grow a backbone and disobey Trump in order to finally pass a bipartisan border security bill like the one Republicans in Congress killed at Trump’s command – despite two-thirds of Americans backing the deal.

Trump: “I think [Republicans] are making a terrible mistake if they vote for the bill.”

New York Times: “Republicans Against Border Enforcement”

Rolling Stone: “Border Patrol Supports ‘Strong’ Immigration Deal. Republicans Don’t Care”

CNN: “Trump, who is hoping to make immigration a key plank of his presidential campaign, has suggested on Truth Social that approving additional resources for the border would make Republicans ‘look bad.’”

Vox: “Trump made this clear when he reportedly urged Republicans in Congress to turn against the bipartisan Senate border security bill scheduled for a vote Wednesday so that he could keep the issue alive through the presidential election. His supporters have largely fallen in line.”

#2: New ways to hide from their all-out assault on women’s basic freedoms — after 125 House Republicans, including Speaker Johnson, sponsored extreme legislation to ban abortion nationwide that could threaten IVF access.

Associated Press: “Republicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments”

Business Insider: “This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which states that the term ‘human being’ includes ‘all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.’

“The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.”

CBS Mornings: “Do you see [standard IVF practices] as murder?”

Mike Johnson: “It’s something that we’ve got to grapple with. It’s a brave new world. IVF’s only been invented, I think, in the early ‘70s.”

Politico: “Dozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.”

#3: An explanation to America’s seniors for the MAGA plan to gut Social Security and Medicare.

Joe Kernen, CNBC: “Have you changed your outlook on how to handle entitlements, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid?”

Trump: “So first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.”

Semafor: “These days, the RSC is best known around Washington as a GOP policy shop responsible for crafting proposals to balance the federal budget, often through changes and cuts to Social Security and Medicare.”

“The Conservative Playbook” by the RSC, led by Chairman Mike Johnson in the 116th Congress: “With our entitlement programs facing dire financial futures and more Americans receiving welfare benefits than ever before, we cannot afford to waste money simply because the federal bureaucracy writes checks to the wrong people or for the wrong amount.”

#4: A plan to rebrand their reputation as the least productive Congress since the Great Depression by putting an end to the petty political games and prioritizing Trump’s political interests over taking real action to make life better for working families.

Punchbowl News: “This is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority we’ve seen in decades covering Congress. It started this way under former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has gotten worse under Johnson.”

New York Times: “But in today’s Republican Party, doing the right thing is considered a transgression, not a virtue — a sign of unforgivable allegiance to the political establishment. … House Republicans, beholden to a base that reveres former President Donald J. Trump and detests compromise, have become ungovernable. And it is doubtful that his precipitous downfall will break the fever.”

Washington Post: “One other factor has brought the House Republicans to this point. That is the person and example of Donald Trump, the former president. Trump put governing by chaos on steroids (if one can call what he did governing) and in doing so produced a group of Mini-Mes, symbolized most by the politician who brought down McCarthy on Tuesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.). This is the kind of leadership the party now offers the country.”

ICYMI: Financial Times: ‘Chaos’ in Donald Trump’s Republican party will boost Joe Biden, Democratic memo says

Key Point: “‘Voters, donors, and staff alike are either fleeing the MAGA-fied Republican party or being chaotically forced out in a mass purge, casting a troubling shadow on the committee’s balance sheet and their prospects at the ballot box leading into a critical election year,’ wrote DNC executive director Sam Cornale.”

Financial Times: ‘Chaos’ in Donald Trump’s Republican party will boost Joe Biden, Democratic memo says

By: James Politi and Lauren Fedor

  • In a memo to be released on Wednesday and obtained by the Financial Times, the Democratic National Committee said its counterpart — the Republican National Committee — was “barely able to stay afloat” amid fundraising struggles and internal strife.
  • “Voters, donors, and staff alike are either fleeing the MAGA-fied Republican party or being chaotically forced out in a mass purge, casting a troubling shadow on the committee’s balance sheet and their prospects at the ballot box leading into a critical election year,” wrote DNC executive director Sam Cornale.
  • [Trump’s] campaign and the RNC have been lagging behind Biden in terms of fundraising and in the amount of cash they have on hand, just as an election battle that is expected to be the most expensive in history gets under way.
  • At the end of 2023, Biden groups had about $118mn in cash on hand, compared with about $66mn for Trump groups. The difference — $52mn — was equal to the Trump groups’ legal costs in criminal and civil cases.
  • The mounting legal costs have raised concerns among some donors that any money they give to Trump or the party might be used to cover the former president’s defence in court, rather than help his campaign or other Republicans.
  • Democratic officials believe that Trump’s takeover of the RNC will only harm Republicans — and help their own prospects — in the November election, both at the presidential level and in congressional and other races.
  • “This latest MAGA rebrand with Whatley and Lara Trump at the helm won’t do the RNC any favours, and it doesn’t bode well for down-ballot Republicans,” Cornale wrote in the DNC memo.
  • “Pledging to spend the RNC’s non-existent war chest on Trump’s legal bills is not a good pitch to donors, who are already refusing to donate”, Cornale wrote. In contrast, he said the DNC was “breaking fundraising records, and are in a strong position to keep building our already massive war chest”.
