JD Vance is Doubling Down on Hate And Extremism by Campaigning With Tucker Carlson

As JD Vance campaigns with Tucker Carlson in the aftermath of reporting on Donald Trump-endorsed North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson’s history of hate, lies, and conspiracy theories, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Yesterday, JD Vance refused to disavow Mark Robinson after he reportedly referred to himself as a ‘Nazi’ and praised Mein Kampf as ‘a good read’ and ‘a real eye opener.’ Today, Vance will take the stage with Tucker Carlson, a far-right extremist who platformed a Holocaust denier and echoes the worst elements of Trump’s hateful agenda. The American people reject this type of vitriolic extremism, even if Donald Trump and Vance continue to embrace purveyors of hate.”

After failing to disavow Trump-endorsed NC gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson’s history of spewing hateful rhetoric, JD Vance is doubling down by campaigning with Tucker Carlson, who recently elevated a Holocaust denier.

CNN: “‘I’m a black NAZI!’: NC GOP nominee for governor made dozens of disturbing comments on porn forum”

Washington Post: “Porn site user linked to Mark Robinson also praised Hitler’s Mein Kampf”

“A porn site user linked to North Carolina gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson praised Adolf Hitler’s book ‘Mein Kampf’ in addition to declaring himself a ‘black NAZI,’ according to screenshots obtained by The Washington Post. The user’s posts on porn forum Nude Africa vanished Thursday, the same day that CNN reported on the many ways the account resembled Robinson. A person with access to the site before their deletion provided The Post with screenshots. ‘Mein Kampf is a good read,’ the user, dubbed ‘minisoldr,’ wrote in a thread seeking book recommendations. ‘It’s very informative and not at all what I thought it would be. It’s a real eye opener.’ The book, an autobiography by Hitler, casts Jews as an ‘eternal parasite.’”

Reporter: “Senator Vance, do you have any reaction to the Mark Robinson news?”

Vance: *rushes into other room*

Vance: “My comment on Mark Robinson is that Kamala Harris cast the deciding vote on the Inflation Explosion Act and  because of that a lot of Americans can’t afford groceries”

Salon: “JD Vance will join Tucker Carlson on stage after the ex-Fox News anchor hosted a pro-Nazi historian”

Jewish Insider: “J.D. Vance declines to criticize Tucker Carlson over his friendly conversation with Holocaust denier”

The Bulwark: “Vance pre-recorded an interview with Tucker Carlson on Thursday just hours after the White House criticized the right-wing populist for featuring a historian who suggested, a few days before, that the Holocaust happened by accident.”

Carlson is a member of Vance’s inner circle and rooted for Donald Trump to pick Vance as his running mate.

New York Times: “Mr. Carlson was a key advocate in pressing Mr. Trump to name Mr. Vance as his running mate, ultimately drowning out other voices who wanted a more moderate or seasoned pick.”

Politico: “The former Fox News superstar [Tucker Carlson] used his prime-time show to promote Vance’s Senate candidacy in 2022 and has remained one of his most ardent public supporters. Vance is a regular guest on Carlson’s new platform… and Carlson reportedly personally lobbied Trump to pick Vance as his vice presidential candidate in the days leading up to the Republican National Convention.”

New York Times: “How Tucker Carlson Helped Sell J.D. Vance as Trump’s Running Mate”

Carlson is an extreme election denier who spread the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen and attempted to whitewash the violence of January 6.

Southern Poverty Law Center: “Two days before Jan. 6, 2021, Carlson told his audience that the 2020 election was ‘unfair’ and had been rigged against then-President Trump.”

Carlson: “It’s very clear January 6th was essentially what it appeared to be: Thousands of ordinary American citizens, voters – people who believe in our democracy far more fervently than Liz Cheney ever has – came to Washington because they sincerely believed democracy had been thwarted. They believed the presidential election was unfair – and they have a right to believe that. And by the way, in many ways, they were correct. The presidential election was unfair. And you don’t have to get into anything about voting machines to believe that.”

Carlson: “The overwhelming majority… were peaceful. They were orderly and meek. These were not insurrectionists. They were sightseers.”

Carlson has endorsed the racist “Great Replacement” theory and said that white supremacy is a “hoax.”

Southern Poverty Law Center: “In 2022, The New York Times studied Carlson’s shows and found that in more than 400 out of 1,150 episodes of ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ from 2016-21, he pushed the suggestion that elites worked to change the demographics of the U.S. to disadvantage white people.”

Carlson: “Now, I know that the left and all the little gatekeepers on Twitter become literally hysterical if you use the term ‘replacement,’ if you suggest that the Democratic Party is trying to replace the current electorate, the voters now casting ballots, with new people, more obedient voters from the Third World. But they become hysterical because that’s what’s happening actually. Let’s just say it: That’s true.”

Carlson: “[White supremacy] is a hoax, just like the Russia hoax. It’s a conspiracy theory used to divide the country and keep a hold on power. That’s exactly what’s going on.”

Southern Poverty Law Center: “The white supremacist David Duke praised Carlson’s embrace of ‘great replacement’ rhetoric in October 2021 on his radio show. Duke at one point asked, ‘How can I be an evil guy?’ for espousing the same things as a mainstream Fox News host.

“‘It’s really interesting that all of these things that Tucker is talking about now – Tucker’s been around a long time, too,’ Duke said of Carlson. ‘He’s been around from the 1990s, 2000s, and in his career, 2000s. And he finally in the last three or four years – somewhat also with the Trump campaign – but he’s finally come around to start even using the word ‘white people’ in any context.’”

As Donald Trump Prepares to Hold a Rally in Wilmington, Missing from the Stage Will Be His Buddy Mark Robinson

Robinson and Trump are two peas in a pod

Ahead of Trump’s visit to Wilmington, NC today, Democrats are continuing to remind North Carolinians of the cozy relationship between the two candidates, including with new billboards in Wilmington, right outside Trump’s rally, highlighting Trump’s consistent praise and admiration of Robinson.

A reminder: Trump has called Robinson “an outstanding person” and an “incredible gentleman.”

As Donald Trump prepares to campaign in North Carolina this weekend, DNC Spokesperson Kenny Palmer released the following statement:

“As Donald Trump heads to Wilmington, NC today, the DNC is reminding North Carolinians that Donald Trump and Mark Robinson are two MAGA extremists cut from the same cloth. Both are anti-choice radicals, election deniers, and have a long and disturbing history of spewing hate. Make no mistake: Trump has embraced and tied himself to Robinson at every turn. Donald Trump and Mark Robinson are too extreme for Wilmington, and too extreme for North Carolina.”

Mark Robinson has appeared at numerous Trump rallies.

WGHP:  “‘I love North Carolina,’ Trump said as he took the stage. ‘In 76 days we’re going to win this beautiful state.’ Numerous North Carolina sheriffs, along with Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, briefly joined Trump on stage, and he gave a shoutout to Addison McDowell, his endorsed candidate for North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. Trump told the crowd that he and Robinson will win their races in the fall.”

Associated Press: “Donald Trump has endorsed North Carolina Lt. Gov Mark Robinson for governor, fulfilling a pledge the former president made several months ago. At a rally Saturday in Greensboro,  Trump compared Robinson, who is Black, to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the famed civil rights leader. Trump referred to Robinson as ‘Martin Luther King on steroids.’… Trump called Robinson, who also spoke at Saturday’s rally, an ‘incredible gentleman’ and ‘great, natural speaker.’ Trump recalled, with some imprecision, how Robinson rose to fame following a 2018 speech to the Greensboro City Council in support of gun rights and police that went viral.”

Like Trump, Robinson also has a long and shameful history of spewing hate and conspiracy theories.

CNN: “‘I’m a black NAZI!’: NC GOP nominee for governor made dozens of disturbing comments on porn forum”

Charlotte Observer: “Robinson said he owns AR-15s, a type of semiautomatic assault rifle, so he can fight back ‘in case the government gets too big for its britches.’”

Robinson: “When the chips are down, when the FBI is knocking on my door, will I cower, will I comply, or will I stand up and fight? Folks, it’s time to stand up and fight.”

HuffPost: “Mark Robinson’s Bizarre Ramble: ‘I Absolutely Want To Go Back To The America Where Women Couldn’t Vote’”

Daily Beast: “God Doesn’t Want Women to Lead, Says N.C. Lieutenant Governor”

HuffPost: “The Unbelievably Bonkers Conspiracy Theorist Running For Governor Of North Carolina”

“North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson has said it himself: He’s a conspiracy theorist.

“Robinson, who is the state’s lieutenant governor, has said he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if the 1969 moon landing was fake and the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an ‘inside job.’ He’s ‘SERIOUSLY skeptical’ of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. He falsely accused David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, of being a paid actor. He’s claimed that climate change is based on ‘junk science.’”

WRAL: “Robinson said this Sunday during a church service outside Charlotte that God created him specifically to fight against the push for LGBTQ rights and visibility, which he says is turning America into a ‘hellhole.’ ‘I was not crafted to be Mr. Nicey-Nice,’ Robinson said. ‘… God formed me because he knew there was going to be a time when God’s learning was going to be intolerable to the wicked. When children were going to be dragged down to go see the drag show. When pornography was going to be presented to our children in schools.’ Later on, he also slammed Christian churches that are accepting toward gay and lesbian people. ‘Makes me sick every time I see it — a church that flies that Rainbow flag, which is a direct spit in the face of God almighty,’ he said.”

Talking Points Memo: “In particular, the Black community has been a major target for Robinson. In various posts over the years he referred to Black people as ‘muddle headed negroes,’ ‘apes,’ and ‘a monkey.’ ‘February is Black History Month. I guess the shortest month of the year is all we need to learn about the separate but equal history of a people who have achieved so little,’ Robinson wrote in 2014.”

Jewish Insider: “Last fall, Raleigh’s News & Observer unearthed an interview in which Robinson spoke with a fringe pastor, Sean Moon, who claimed that the modern incarnation of the four horsemen of the apocalypse includes China, the CIA, Islam and the Rothschild family of ‘international bankers that rule every single national or federal reserve-type style of central bank in every single country.’ Rather than objecting to the blatantly antisemitic conspiracy theory, Robinson grunted along in agreement. ‘That’s exactly right,’ he said.”

HuffPost: “Top GOP Candidate For N.C. Governor Has A History Of Demeaning Successful Women.”

Robinson is running on an extreme MAGA education agenda, including  calling to eliminate the Department of Education, eliminate the state’s Board of Education, and reject funding for schools.

WUNC: “‘Beat them in a circle’: Robinson touts corporal punishment but won’t say if it belongs in schools”

Robinson: “The way to do this is to demand proficiency in reading, writing, and math in grades one through five. In those grades, we don’t need to be teaching social studies. We don’t need to be teaching science. We surely don’t need to be talking about equity and social justice. I’ll say it again: we need to be teaching kids how to read, how to write, and how to do mathematics. If I were totally in charge of education, that’s the course I would set in North Carolina.”

WRAL: “Robinson: ‘We don’t want’ federal education funds in NC”

“‘Honestly, come on. There should be no federal department of education,’ Robinson said.”

NC Newsline: “In his bid to become governor, Lt. Governor Robinson has supported an expansion of private school vouchers and advocated for eliminating the State Board of Education.”

Robinson continues to put the gun lobby over the safety of our children and even publicly berated mass shooting survivors.

Charlotte Observer Editorial Board: “As mass shootings continue unabated, NC Lt. Gov. Robinson cozies up to gun lobby”

CNN: “[Robinson] mocked school shooting survivors and once justified shooting protesters”

“Robinson… has a long history of remarks viciously mocking and attacking teenage survivors of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, for their advocacy for gun control measures. In posts after the shooting, Robinson called the students ‘spoiled, angry, know it all CHILDREN,’ ‘spoiled little bastards,’ and ‘media prosti-tots.’ Robinson, whose political rise as a conservative Internet personality started when a clip of him speaking at a city council meeting in April 2018 went viral, as he was speaking against a proposal to cancel a local gun show after the Parkland shooting. He also began attacking the Parkland survivors after they launched the ‘March for Our Lives’ movement that called for new gun control measures, comparing the students to communists.”

News & Observer: “North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson delivered a fiery defense of gun ownership at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Houston, vowing to continue fighting against supporters of stricter gun laws who he said want to disarm all Americans. … The NRA’s decision to move ahead with the three-day annual gathering as planned has come under intense scrutiny this week after a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday left 19 children and two teachers dead.”

While Trump continues his pursuit of repealing the Affordable Care Act, Robinson has railed against giving hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians access to health care by expanding Medicaid.

News & Observer: “Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the presumed frontrunner for the GOP nomination for governor in 2024, has said he doesn’t think the state should expand Medicaid. In September 2022, Robinson told Business NC that he wasn’t in favor of expansion and hoped the effort to expand Medicaid failed, because he didn’t want health care in the state ‘to be turned over to the federal government.’”

MAGA Malarkey: The Extremism You Missed From Republicans This Week

MAGA Republicans stooped to new lows this week with their extremism, hypocrisy, chaos, and — as President Biden would call it — malarkey. In case you missed it: JD Vance celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a “victory” after new reporting showed that Donald Trump’s abortion bans lead to preventable deaths; Vance correctly said Trump has been consistent about his extreme, anti-choice agenda; Trump’s MAGA minions in the Senate once again blocked legislation to protect IVF access nationwide – and Vance couldn’t even be bothered to show up for the vote; Trump continued to pressure Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson to shut down the government; Vance failed to disavow Mark Robinson after yesterday’s horrific reporting; Vance made clear that the Trump-Vance health care plan is to rip away protections from people with preexisting conditions; and Trump once again lied about his loss in the 2020 election.

Hours after new reporting showed that Donald Trump’s abortion bans across the country are leading to preventable deaths, JD Vance celebrated Trump’s overturning of Roe v. Wade as a “victory.”

Vance: “The Supreme Court’s decision [to overturn Roe v. Wade] was a victory… We’re united in our gratitude and our admiration for these devoted defenders of the unborn and for the judges, justices, and especially President Trump, whose commitment to defending the law and the constitution allowed this breakthrough after over 50 years.”

ProPublica: “Abortion Bans Have Delayed Emergency Medical Care. In Georgia, Experts Say This Mother’s Death Was Preventable.”

“In her final hours, Amber Nicole Thurman suffered from a grave infection that her suburban Atlanta hospital was well-equipped to treat. […]

“But just that summer, her state had made performing the procedure a felony, with few exceptions. Any doctor who violated the new Georgia law could be prosecuted and face up to a decade in prison. […]

“It took 20 hours for doctors to finally operate. By then, it was too late.”

ProPublica: “Afraid to Seek Care Amid Georgia’s Abortion Ban, She Stayed at Home and Died”

“Candi Miller’s health was so fragile, doctors warned having another baby could kill her. […]

“But when the mother of three realized she had unintentionally gotten pregnant in the fall of 2022, Georgia’s new abortion ban gave her no choice. Although it made exceptions for acute, life-threatening emergencies, it didn’t account for chronic conditions, even those known to present lethal risks later in pregnancy. […]

“Her case adds to mounting evidence that exceptions to abortion bans do not, as billed, protect the “life of the mother.”

Vance correctly said that Trump has been consistent on his extreme, anti-choice agenda to ban abortion nationwide.

Vance: “You take [Trump] for his word or you don’t. … He’s been as consistent as he could about [abortion].”

Associated Press: “Trump says he will support national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy”

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump’s MAGA minions in the Senate blocked legislation to protect IVF access nationwide (again), and his running mate Vance couldn’t even be bothered to show up for the vote.

The Independent: “IVF is supposedly key to Trump’s campaign. JD Vance didn’t even show up to vote on it”

“…it was Trump who put IVF in jeopardy. His confirmation of ultra-conservative judges to the Supreme Court led to the overturn of Roe v Wade with the Dobbs decision, which then in turn led a court in Alabama to declare embryos humans. If embryos are humans, of course, then IVF is untenable. […]

“Unsurprisingly, most Republicans opposed the motion. But what is more surprising is who did not vote at all: Trump’s running mate and man on the Hill, Senator JD Vance of Ohio. […]

“This is not the first time that Vance has skipped a vote on legislation that ostensibly matters to him. He’s previously said he supports an expanded child tax credit — but then when given a chance to vote on a bipartisan proposal that passed the House and would have included a child tax credit, he skipped the vote.”

NPR: “Senate Republicans block IVF bill, as Democrats elevate issue ahead of November election”

Trump continues to pressure Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson to shut down the government, something even Mitch McConnell knows is “beyond politically stupid.”

The Hill: “House GOP torpedoes Speaker Johnson’s funding bill”

“A diverse group of House Republicans torpedoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) proposal to fund the government on Wednesday, dealing an embarrassing blow to the GOP leader and derailing his strategy to avoid a shutdown at the end of the month.

“The vote outcome, nonetheless, is putting the Speaker in a bind. It leaves the path to averting a shutdown unclear, puts him in danger of disappointing former President Trump and his conference’s right-flank, and threatens to thwart his efforts to remain GOP leader in the next Congress.”

CNN: “Johnson under pressure after House fails to pass GOP funding plan and Trump pushes shutdown”

NBC News: “House Republicans reject their own funding bill with a shutdown around the corner”

“House Republicans on Wednesday defeated their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it.

“It was an embarrassing blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who had yanked the same funding package off the floor last week amid growing GOP defections, only to watch it collapse on Wednesday in a vote that seemed doomed from the start.”

The Daily Beast: “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was blunt in his assessment of a potential shutdown on Tuesday, warning that it would be ‘beyond politically stupid’ for Republicans to allow the government to shutter just weeks before the election. ‘One thing you cannot have is a government shutdown. It would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election, because certainly we’d get the blame,’ McConnell told reporters.”

Vance failed to disavow Mark Robinson after yesterday’s horrific reporting.

CNN: “‘I’m a black NAZI!’: NC GOP nominee for governor made dozens of disturbing comments on porn forum”

Vance made clear that the Trump-Vance “concept of a plan” for health care is to rip away protections for Americans with preexisting conditions.

Washington Post: “Vance floats new health plans for chronically ill, reopening ACA debate”

“Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) this week said the Trump campaign wants to roll back the Affordable Care Act’s approach to how chronically ill Americans shop for health insurance, with the Republican vice-presidential candidate reopening a health-care debate that Democrats are eager to have — and resurrecting a fight that has repeatedly burned the GOP.

“Speaking in North Carolina on Wednesday, Vance floated an idea to group chronically ill patients together in health-insurance pools based on their elevated risks. That would reverse a shift driven by the Affordable Care Act, which largely ended the practice of shunting chronically ill patients into what are known as high-risk pools and provided new protections for patients with preexisting conditions.”

Bloomberg: “JD Vance’s Pitch Puts Obamacare Repeal Efforts Back in the Spotlight”

“Democrats are seizing on JD Vance’s pitch to do away with a bedrock part of the Affordable Care Act, saying it would cause costs for chronically ill people to spike.

“At a rally on Wednesday, Vance said a second Trump administration would work to separate people into different risk pools, allowing them ‘to choose a health care plan that works for them.’

“Such a policy would effectively end the ACA’s guarantee that people pay the same prices and get the same benefits regardless of their health status, a popular part of the program.”

Semafor: “JD Vance reopens the pre-existing condition debates”

New York Magazine: “Vance: Trump’s Health-Care Plan Is to Let Insurers Charge More for Preexisting Conditions”

The New Republic: “J.D. Vance Reveals Atrocious Little Detail of Trump’s Health Care Plan”

Trump lied – for the umpteenth time – about his loss by over 7 million votes in the 2020 election.

Trump: “If that didn’t happen, I don’t think — and I guarantee you, if the election were a straight election, we won that election. We should’ve won that election, everybody knew we won the election.”

Trump-Vance’s Project 2025 Agenda Would Take Extreme Trump Abortion Bans Nationwide

As Donald Trump, JD Vance, and their extreme MAGA allies push their Project 2025 agenda that includes banning abortion nationwide, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“The facts are clear: thanks to Donald Trump ‘proudly’ overturning Roe v. Wade, women are being denied critical and life-saving emergency medical care. While women suffer under the cruel abortion bans he made possible, Trump and JD Vance have an extreme Project 2025 agenda that would ban abortion nationwide with or without Congress. The American people are already seeing the dangers of Trump abortion bans in real time — and will make sure the Trump-Vance ticket can’t take their horrifying agenda nationwide.”

Donald Trump “proudly” overturned Roe v. Wade and paved the way for extreme abortion bans across the country.

New York Times: 22 states across the country currently have abortion bans.

TRUMP DID THIS: Reporting shows that abortion bans across the country — which Trump said are “working very brilliantly” — are delaying emergency medical care and leading to “preventable” deaths.

ProPublica: “Abortion Bans Have Delayed Emergency Medical Care. In Georgia, Experts Say This Mother’s Death Was Preventable.”

“But ProPublica obtained reports that confirm that at least two women have already died after they couldn’t access legal abortions and timely medical care in their state…

“Thurman’s case marks the first time an abortion-related death, officially deemed ‘preventable,’ is coming to public light. ProPublica will share the story of the second in the coming days…

“But since abortion was banned or restricted in 22 states over the past two years, women in serious danger have been turned away from emergency rooms and told that they needed to be in more peril before doctors could help. Some have been forced to continue high-risk pregnancies that threatened their lives. Those whose pregnancies weren’t even viable have been told they could return when they were ‘crashing.’”

Trump: “We broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly … But they’re working, and it’s working the way it’s supposed to.”

Trump, JD Vance, and MAGA Republicans are pushing an extreme anti-choice Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide — with or without Congress — and is promising anti-choice extremists will “always have a seat” at their table.

Rolling Stone: “Trump Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide: Report”

Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”

Sean Hannity, Fox News: “So you completely agree, are in full, complete agreement with President Trump?”

JD Vance: “My view is that Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party and his views on abortion are going to be the views that dominate this party and drive this party forward.”

Vance, to anti-choice extremists: “Cultural conservatives… will always have a seat at the table in the Republican Party of this president and of this leadership…”

Rolling Stone: “Inside the MAGA Plan to Attack Birth Control, Surveil Women and Ban the Abortion Pill”

“[Project 2025] explicitly names their intention not just to rescind FDA approval for the abortion pill if they regain control of the White House in 2024, but to revive a 150-year-old law that criminalizes sending or receiving through the mail any “article, instrument, substance, drug, medicine or thing” that could be used to facilitate an abortion. That law, the Comstock Act, is viewed as a de facto federal abortion ban by reproductive rights advocates and anti-abortion activists alike…

“The attacks on mifepristone and resurrection of Comstock stand out as particularly harmful proposals, but they are only two of the dozens of ways the Republicans behind Project 2025 envision restricting access to abortion and contraception if they win the White House next year. Elsewhere in the document, there are proposals to eliminate the morning-after pill from the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate under the rationale that it is a ‘potential abortifacient.’”

Axios: “This is undeniably a Trump-driven operation. The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee — one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer — is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.”

New York Times: “Roberts told me that he views Heritage’s role today as ‘institutionalizing Trumpism.’”

Politico: “Organizations including Heritage, former Vice President Mike Pence’s group Advancing American Freedom, and the Southern Baptist Convention’s public advocacy-focused Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission have worked behind the scenes over the last few weeks to distribute talking points, circulate policy recommendations and educate Republican officials and their staff about their ethical concerns with how IVF is commonly practiced in the United States.”

Vance’s anti-choice record includes wanting abortion to be “illegal nationally,” celebrating Trump’s overturning of Roe, attacking exceptions for rape and incest, and more.

CNN: “JD Vance said in 2022 he ‘would like abortion to be illegal nationally’”

“During a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he ‘certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally’ and was ‘sympathetic’ to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion.”

Newsweek: “J.D. Vance Backs ‘National Standard’ for Abortions”

Daily Beast: “J.D. Vance suggested he would support prohibiting abortion even in cases of rape and incest—and dismissed those catalysts as ‘inconvenient.’”

Vice: “JD Vance Compared Abortion to Slavery”

The Hill: “During his campaign for Senate, Vance applauded the overturning of Roe v. Wade and supported Texas’s ban on abortion, which does not allow exceptions other than cases where the mother’s life is at risk.

“‘Two wrongs don’t make a right,’ he said in 2021 when asked whether abortion laws should allow for exceptions for rape and incest.”

JD Vance: “I think that what I really think on – so first of all, the Dobbs decision, everybody knows, overruled Roe v. Wade – I think that was the right decision.”

Vance: “The Supreme Court’s decision [to overturn Roe v. Wade] was a victory… We’re united in our gratitude and admiration for these devoted defenders of the unborn and for the judges, justices, and especially President Trump, whose commitment to defending the law and the constitution allowed this breakthrough after over 50 years.”

NBC News: “Senate Republicans block Democratic bill codifying Roe v. Wade abortion protections”

“Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked legislation led by Democrats to revive the protections of Roe v. Wade in the wake of the Supreme Court eliminating the nationwide right to abortion.”

Republicans who voted against include: JD Vance.

REALITY CHECK: Attacks on reproductive rights, like Trump and Vance’s anti-choice Project 2025 agenda to rip away reproductive freedoms, are wildly unpopular.

USA Today: “Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.”

Axios: “Record share of U.S. voters back abortion rights and will vote on it: Gallup”

NBC News: “Abortion rights have won in every election since Roe v. Wade was overturned”

Axios: “There’s widespread support for letting women obtain drugs for medication abortion from their doctor or a clinic, with 72% supporting — including half of Republicans.”

ICYMI: Trump’s Project 2025 Plans Would Devastate Rural America

A new report by the Center for American Progress details how Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda to gut checks and balances and give himself unprecedented power would be devastating for rural communities across America.

Not only does Trump’s Project 2025 agenda include plans to slash farmers’ safety nets, gut crucial investments in rural connectivity, and cut off disaster recovery programs for small businesses – but it could also defund public schools and eliminate childcare options that rural communities depend on.

Center for American Progress: Project 2025’s Plan To Gut Checks and Balances Harms Rural America

Key Point: “Project 2025 is a plan to gut America’s system of checks and balances in order to enact an extreme, far-right agenda that would hurt all Americans. The plan proposes taking power away from everyday people to give politicians, judges, and corporations more control over Americans’ lives. Here are specific ways that Project 2025 harms Americans in rural communities.”

Putting farmers at increased risk of financial harm and stunting their ability to grow: “Project 2025 proposes eliminating the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs, which “[protect] farmers from substantial drops in crop prices or revenues” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The plan would also “ban farmers from receiving ARC and PLC payments the same year they also receive crop insurance indemnities,” undermining farmers’ ability to plant the next crop.”

Eliminating child care options: “Project 2025 proposes to make this shortage even worse by eliminating Head Start, which… would wipe out a critical supply of child care in rural communities. A previous CAP analysis found that Head Start accounted for between 21 and 59 percent of all child care slots in rural communities across 10 states.”

Defunding public schools that serve rural students: “Project 2025 calls for eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and the Title I program, which provides vital resources to schools that serve low-income students, including in rural areas.”

Eliminating free school meals that disproportionately benefit rural students: “Hence, Project 2025’s proposal to end the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)—which provides free school meals to those attending schools serving a student body wherein at least 25 percent of students are eligible for free- or reduced-price school meals—would be an acute threat to students in rural America. Nearly 20 million students attending more than 40,000 schools in the United States are currently eligible to benefit from free school meals under the CEP.”

Undermining recovery efforts for small businesses from natural disasters in rural areas, which are more susceptible to extreme weather events: “Project 2025 proposes to end the Small Business Administration’s direct lending program… Doing so would be particularly harmful to rural communities that ‘lack the basic capacity to access competitive federal [recovery] grants” due to lack of manpower, financial resources, expertise, and time.’”

Gutting rural connectivity: “Project 2025 calls for repealing all unspent funds provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, otherwise known as the bipartisan infrastructure law (BIL). Rural communities have benefited tremendously from the law, including through upgraded roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, ports, and waterways. The BIL also provided an unprecedented $65 billion to deploy broadband in all communities and make internet access more affordable. Prior to the law’s passage, rural communities were nearly 15 times more likely to lack access to reliable broadband than those in urban areas, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Thus, repealing the bipartisan infrastructure law’s broadband investments would disproportionately harm people living, working, or going to school in rural America.”

Limiting air travel service in rural areas: “Project 2025 slams the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which helps ensure commercial air carriers can serve small airports in rural communities. The plan blames EAS for ‘distorting the commercial market’ and calls for ‘finally ending the program.’ Specifically, Project 2025 proposes allowing the market to dictate commercial service in all regions, including rural communities that would otherwise not be served in the absence of EAS.”

What They Are Saying: Trump-Vance’s Project 2025 Anti-Health Care Agenda Would Rip Away Protections For Pre-Existing Conditions

This week, JD Vance reminded us exactly what the extreme Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda on health care would do: rip away access to affordable health care coverage from millions of Americans, including people with pre-existing conditions. After Trump tried (and failed) to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Vance is making clear that it is a “priority” for him and Donald Trump to “terminate” the ACA — and they absolutely will if given the chance.

Here’s what they are saying about the Trump-Vance agenda to gut protections for pre-existing conditions:

Washington Post: “Vance floats new health plans for chronically ill, reopening ACA debate”

Key Point: “Sen.

New York Magazine: “Vance: Trump’s Health-Care Plan Is to Let Insurers Charge More for Preexisting Conditions”

Key Point: “What Vance came up with is not only surprising but, if understood properly, far more damaging than Trump’s original statement. The Trump plan, according to Vance, is to permit insurance companies to discriminate against people with preexisting conditions.

The New Republic: “J.D. Vance Reveals Atrocious Little Detail of Trump’s Health Care Plan”

Key Point: “Vance said that under Donald Trump’s plan, Americans wouldn’t be put ‘into the same risk pools.’… But doing so, as Vance suggests, would come at the expense of much higher charges for everyone else—especially older Americans and those with pre-existing conditions. Right now, the law allows insurance companies to bill older people up to three times as much as they do for the young, Vance is talking about making that gap even higher.”

Bloomberg: “JD Vance’s Pitch Puts Obamacare Repeal Efforts Back in the Spotlight”

Key Point: “Democrats are seizing on JD Vance’s pitch to do away with a bedrock part of the Affordable Care Act, saying it would cause costs for chronically ill people to spike.

Politico: “How JD Vance reopened the health care fight”

Key Point: “Vance on Meet the Press last Sunday and in Raleigh on Wednesday, outlined a plan to ‘deregulate’ health care while somehow still making sure everyone had coverage, including the tens of millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions.

“‘You also want to implement some deregulatory agenda so that people can choose a health care plan that fits them,’ he said. ‘And we want to make sure everybody is covered.

“‘But the best way to do that is to actually promote some more choice in our health care system and not have a one-size-fits-all approach that puts a lot of people into the same insurance pools, into the same risk pools, that actually makes it harder for people to make the right choices for their families,’ Vance added.”

The Hill: “Vance revives old GOP fights on ObamaCare insurance coverage”

Key Point: “Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) on Sunday floated an idea that would turn back the clock on covering people with preexisting conditions, relitigating a position that was a hallmark of GOP proposals to replace ObamaCare during Donald Trump’s presidency.

“In an interview on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ Vance said Trump’s health plan would ‘promote choice’ in the health system by separating sicker people into different health insurance coverage pools from the healthier populations.”

The 19th: “Health plan floated by JD Vance could weaken protections for pregnant people”

Key Point: “A health care proposal suggested by Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance could gut a popular Affordable Care Act protection, making it legal for companies to charge more for or deny coverage of expensive medical conditions, including pregnancy.

“Speaking at a Wednesday event in North Carolina, Vance said that if elected, former President Donald Trump would change health insurance regulations so that people who are healthier and use their insurance less can have cheaper coverage, while those with chronic conditions or who use health care more would have different insurance.”

Vox: “Trump’s health care plan exposes the truth about his ‘populism’”

Key Point: “On that program, NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Vance to explain what — if anything — Trump planned to change about America’s health care system.

[…]

“[T]he one concrete policy Vance did detail would actually involve making health care coverage less affordable for those with chronic illnesses.”

Semafor: “JD Vance reopens the pre-existing condition debates”

Key Point: “Vance’s comments in the same interview appeared to reference policy ideas advanced by Trump during his presidency that would have significantly changed, pared back, or eliminated aspects of the law’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

[…]

“He also criticized the law for putting people into ‘the same risk pools’ with a ‘one-size-fits-all approach’ — a seeming reference to prior Republican proposals to offer insurance to people with expensive conditions in separate ‘high risk pools’ rather than require insurers to cover everyone together under similar plans.”

Washington Post: “Opinion: Trump’s ‘concepts of a plan’ would destroy the health-care system”

Key Point: “Vance is referring to letting insurance companies offer different plans and pricing based on whether patients have preexisting conditions or might need more medical care because of their age, health status, gender, etc., or perhaps even their genetic profile. Rather than spreading the insurance risk around to a larger group of people who to some extent cross-subsidize one another, Vance wants to segment riskier patients into their own ‘pools.’ Sicker, higher-risk, more expensive people can ‘choose’ to go into one pool; healthier, less risky, cheaper-to-insure people can ‘choose’ to land in another.

“Allowing insurers to discriminate based on age or preexisting conditions has long been politically unpopular. But politics aside, the bigger problem with this design is that it would probably cause insurance markets to implode.”

DNC Launches Campus Voter Registration Campaign at HBCUs and HSIs to Mark National Black Voter Day and Hispanic Heritage Month

During Hispanic Heritage Month and on the eve of National Black Voter Day, the DNC is expanding its HBCU and HSI campus voter registration campaign with hundreds of “I Will Vote” posters in battleground states to empower students to make their voices heard

Today, the Democratic National Committee expanded its campus voter registration campaign on HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institutions) campuses across battleground states to reach college students in these critical states and empower them with the information they need to register to vote ahead of Election Day.

In addition to campus kiosk ads, students will see hundreds of “I Will Vote” posters across campuses in Georgia, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania laying out the stakes of this election for young voters and the threat Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda represents to students’ futures – from banning abortion and using the government to monitor women’s pregnancies, to rolling back student loan debt forgiveness, to even slashing public education funding, including support for colleges and universities. The on-campus ads direct students to IWillVote.com to encourage them to check their voter registration status, register to vote, and access information on when, where, and how to vote.

“Young voters are critical to the coalition that Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz are building ahead of November’s election,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “The DNC is taking every opportunity to reach students where they are and make sure they have all of the tools they need to vote this November on the issues that matter most to them. Young voters’ futures and freedoms are on the line as Donald Trump and JD Vance’s extreme Project 2025 agenda threatens to undermine reproductive rights, rig the economy for the ultra-wealthy, and slash public education funding, including support for colleges and universities. This campaign is the latest investment to bring young voters the information they need to cast their votes by calling, texting, or visiting I Will Vote online.”

Earlier this week, the DNC announced a new “I Will Vote” text-line, providing young voters with an easy way to access voter information at their fingertips by texting VOTE to 70888 for English or VOTO to 70888 in Spanish. I Will Vote is also available online at IWillVote.com and VoyAVotar.com and through a phone hotline at 1-833-DEM-VOTE (1-833-336-8683). Whether students prefer to visit online, call, or text, the Democratic Party is ensuring that voter information is at their fingertips ahead of this critical election season, including how to register to vote and access important, state-specific voting information – from voting deadlines to polling and ballot drop off locations.

BREAKING: House GOP Chaos Continues As Trump Demands Mike Johnson Shut Down the Government If They Don’t Get What They Want

As MAGA Mike Johnson tries and fails to pass a continuing resolution that prioritizes Trump’s demands ahead of the American people, DNC Senior Spokesperson Hannah Muldavin released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is now demanding that the House GOP put his political interests ahead of the American people and shut down the government if Republicans don’t get their way. Republicans and MAGA Mike Johnson showed us yet again today that they are more consumed with assuaging Trump with political stunts than fighting for working families — willing to cause a shutdown that even Mitch McConnell warned is ‘politically beyond stupid’ if they don’t get what they want. House Republicans have once again reminded the American people of the chaos they can expect if Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Republicans are calling the shots.”

NEW: As Trump demands MAGA Mike Johnson shut down the government if they don’t get what he wants, a move Mitch McConnell calls “beyond politically stupid,” House Republicans just failed again to pass a continuing resolution that puts Trump’s demands ahead of the American people.

MAGA Mike Johnson made House Republicans vote on the same legislation that he pulled just last week, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle can agree on one thing: they’re not really sure why.

Washington Post: “House to vote Wednesday on doomed GOP bill to avert government shutdown”

Punchbowl News: “The House is set to vote today on a short-term funding bill that won’t pass. GOP lawmakers are grumbling about messaging, strategy and yearning to get back home to run for reelection. And Speaker Mike Johnson is being publicly and privately cagey about his next move, frustrating the entire House Republican Conference, which is looking for guidance about the leadership’s plans. In fact, the GOP leadership is even in the dark at most times as to what Johnson is thinking and planning.

“Johnson is putting a bill on the floor that his entire leadership team — Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Tom Emmer of Minnesota — knows is going to fail. One House Republican lawmaker entered a meeting of GOP whips Tuesday and told us that he was ‘going to see how well they’re polishing this turd.’”

Axios: “Johnson’s colleagues baffled by his shutdown strategy”

“House members in both parties are perplexed about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) decision to revive a short-term government funding bill that he pulled last week.

“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), asked if he has any sense of why Johnson is reviving the bill, told Axios, ‘I have no idea.”

“Why it matters: Even some Republicans are questioning Johnson’s strategic decision-making, with some warning that his decision to hold a vote on the measure could actually hurt him in the long run.

“I don’t know how he thinks it’s going to pass … where are the votes coming from?” said Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas).

“Another House Republican, speaking on the condition of anonymity, called Johnson’s plan ‘puzzling’ and predicted that it will frustrate some GOP lawmakers.

“Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, told reporters: ‘There’s an old saying in Arkansas that you don’t learn nothing the second time you get kicked in the head by a mule.’”

The House GOP’s chaos continues as they follow Donald Trump and JD Vance’s calls for a government shutdown unless they get their way – proving once again they cannot govern.

NBC News: “‘I would shut down the government in a heartbeat if they don’t get it,’ Trump said on the ‘Monica Crowley Show’ last week.”

“‘It should be in the bill. And if it’s not in the bill, you want to close it up,’ he said. ‘So I’m not there but, you know, I have influence.’”

CNBC: “Trump tells Republicans to shut down government if hard-line voter ID bill gets cut from spending bill”

“Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said congressional Republicans should pursue a government shutdown if they cannot attach a hard-line voting bill to the temporary funding resolution that would keep the government open.”

Vance: “…And so yeah, man, why shouldn’t we be trying to force this government shutdown fight to get something out of if that’s good for the American people?

A government shutdown could disrupt the lives of millions of Americans who are on the federal government payroll.

Reuters: “All federal employees’ pay could be disrupted during a shutdown, though they would receive retroactive pay once government operations resume.”

Congressional Research Service: “According to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal workforce is composed of an estimated 2.1 million civilian workers.”

ICYMI: Republican Allies Boost Spoiler Candidate Jill Stein

New reporting from CBS News reveals that third-party spoiler candidate Jill Stein’s legal efforts in Nevada and Wisconsin are being aided separately by Jay Sekulow, an attorney who represented Trump during his impeachment trials, and Michael Dean, an attorney involved in lawsuits attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.

Stein’s campaign has admitted it welcomes the support. On Monday, her campaign manager, Jason Call, acknowledged Trump’s team has ulterior motives for propping up Stein’s spoiler candidacy and showed no qualms about being used in their political games.

This follows reporting from the Associated Press that exposed GOP efforts to prop up third party candidates like Jill Stein and Cornel West. It revealed that a GOP associated firm, the Synapse Group, collected ballot access signatures on Stein’s behalf in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Cornel West was aided by a network of Republican operatives across the battlegrounds. In North Carolina, Blitz Canvassing– a firm known for working with Republican congressional races and for a pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC — aided West in gaining ballot access. Republican activists who gathered signatures for West in an effort to “[help] the Trump team” told voters having West on the ballot “helps take away votes” from the Democratic nominee.

ICYMI: CBS News: Republican allies boost longshot candidate Jill Stein as Democrats try to remove her from ballots in battleground states

By: Allison Novelo

  • [Stein’s] campaign has accepted support from Republican allies as she works to secure ballot access in multiple states, including key battleground states like Nevada and Wisconsin […]
  • In Nevada, where the Green Party was removed from the ballot earlier this month because of incorrect petition forms, according to the Nevada Supreme Court, the party is seeking reinstatement and is being represented by Jay Sekulow, an attorney who represented Trump during his impeachment trials.
  • On Friday, the Nevada Green Party asked for emergency intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Nevada Supreme Court’s ruling under the pro bono guidance of Sekulow, the Stein campaign told CBS News.
  • In Wisconsin, […] Stein accepted legal representation from Michael D. Dean, a Wisconsin lawyer involved in lawsuits attempting to overturn the 2020 election results on behalf of Trump, according to an ethics complaint filed by the bipartisan group The 65 Project.
  • “We understand that Republicans are going to want to help us for their own reasons, but our reasons are for democracy,” [said Jason Call, Jill Stein’s campaign manager.]
  • The Stein campaign learned over the weekend that yet another lawsuit had been filed against the third-party candidate in New Hampshire. In response, the campaign stated it is ready to accept assistance from partisan lawyers if it has to in order to secure ballot access.
  • “Cornel West, he’s one of my favorite candidates,” Trump said during a campaign rally in Philadelphia in June. “I like her also, Jill Stein, I like her very much. You know why? She takes 100% from them. He takes 100%.”
  • Recent Associated Press reporting shows that Cornel West has a network of GOP operatives supporting his campaign, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who suspended his presidential bid last month and endorsed Trump, is now working to remove himself from ballots in states where he believes his candidacy could siphon votes away from Trump.

STATEMENT: RFK Jr. Staffing Healthcare Positions Is Terrifying

In a recent appearance with Tucker Carlson, anti-vax Trump surrogate RFK Jr. proudly claimed, “I’m going to be deeply involved in helping to choose the people who run FDA, NIH, and CDC.” Even Carlson acknowledged that people will have “nightmares” about that prospect.

RFK Jr. has a long history of pushing dangerous rhetoric and views on healthcare — including advocacy that led to a deadly measles outbreak. Now, new reporting from the New York Times unpacks what experts call a “worrisome” history of public health policy positions as RFK Jr. further embeds himself with Trump’s inner circle.

In response, DNC Senior Advisor Mary Beth Cahill released the following statement:

“The prospect of RFK Jr. choosing personnel for the FDA, NIH, and CDC should scare the daylights out of anyone who cares about public health. His dangerous rhetoric helped stoke a deadly measles outbreak that killed dozens of children — an incident that he still refuses to accept any responsibility for. He’s the last person who should be anywhere near the agencies charged with keeping Americans safe and healthy. Trump embracing RFK Jr. — with his erratic behavior and harmful policies — further illustrates how disastrous it would be to have him back in the White House.”

ICYMI: New York Times: What R.F.K. Jr.’s Alliance With Trump Could Mean for Public Health

By: Emily Baumgaertner

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. looked out into the crowd in Glendale, Ariz., on Saturday at his first major campaign event for his onetime rival, former President Donald J. Trump, and talked up their future together — one he hopes will finally bring his long-held agenda for public health to fruition.
  • As a candidate polling in the single digits, Mr. Kennedy had no path to the White House. But now, as an ally of Mr. Trump’s who has already been named to the transition team that would advise on personnel and policy priorities, he has very real opportunities to exert influence and gain power in a field where he has long been considered a fringe voice.
  • Historically, members of a winning candidate’s transition team often end up in prestigious positions themselves. Mr. Trump said in an interview with CNN that he “probably would” appoint Mr. Kennedy to a role in a second Trump administration.
  • In an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Kennedy confirmed that Mr. Trump “asked me to be involved in the administration at a high level.” He said they had not discussed the specific role yet, given the “legal constraints” of doing so before the election.
  • “We’ve talked about the sort of general role in looking at corruption across the agencies, having some kind of portfolio that would look at unraveling corruption — and particularly in the agencies that I’ve had a lot of litigation experience with,” Mr. Kennedy said, citing several federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, Environmental Protection Agency and C.D.C. “And public health: in doing what needs to be done to end the chronic disease epidemic. So those are the two areas that he’s asked me to be involved with.”
  • Mr. Kennedy would likely struggle to achieve Senate confirmation for a cabinet post, like secretary of health and human services, or to head an agency, like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Mr. Trump could appoint him to a White House position, such as a seat on the domestic policy council, with no obstacles. The former president has already indicated that he would establish a panel of experts to work with Mr. Kennedy to investigate the “toxins” behind chronic health issues in children.
  • That prospect concerns many public health officials who are not themselves overtly political.
  • “For elected officials — or the people who are advising or are appointed by elected officials — we want to make sure they have the best interest of families and children at heart,” said Dr. James Campbell, an infectious disease physician and pediatric vaccine expert at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “My knowledge of statements made in the past — they make me concerned.”
  • Mr. Kennedy has promoted theories that suggest H.I.V. is not the true cause of AIDS, that 5G networks are being used for mass surveillance and that Black Americans in particular should avoid being vaccinated.
  • Mr. Kennedy has also likened some Covid policies to conditions experienced by Jewish people during the Holocaust and wrote a book arguing that Bill Gates and Dr. Anthony S. Fauci conspired with vaccine manufacturers for their own profit. These were among a multitude of other theories so robust that a social media research nonprofit called Mr. Kennedy one of the top 12 superspreaders of misinformation about Covid on the internet.
  • In a time when an array of pathogens — bird flu, mpox and new variants of Covid, among others — could potentially cause major disease outbreaks, health experts say confidence in vaccines and the agencies that oversee their approval is more important than ever.
  • But at the Saturday rally, Mr. Kennedy denounced the “corrupt murderous state of corporate power” that he said had given major pharmaceutical companies and other groups “control of the F.D.A.” He promised to “eliminate” the corruption inside the agencies.
  • Dr. David Gorski, a cancer surgeon at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Michigan and Ohio who has tracked Mr. Kennedy’s health statements for nearly 20 years, said the narratives had been destructive.
  • When public health officials worried in 2019 that the anti-vaccine movement was driving a deadly measles outbreak in Samoa, for example, Mr. Kennedy wrote to the nation’s prime minister on Children’s Health Defense letterhead, suggesting that the failure of vaccines given to pregnant women and children was the true culprit.
  • “It is a regrettable possibility that these children are casualties” of the vaccine, Mr. Kennedy wrote. More than 50 children were killed in the outbreak.
  • He is quite a magician, from the standpoint of being able to pull the wool over people’s eyes,” said Dr. Richard Allen Williams, a cardiologist and the president of the Minority Health Institute. Dr. Williams worries that certain marginalized groups could be more susceptible to Mr. Kennedy’s claims. “Many people will not be not see what he’s aiming to do. Therein lies the danger,” he said.
  • “The public is what I would call the proverbial chicken house, and I look at R.F.K. Jr. as a fox,” Dr. Williams added. “He’s looking for a way in — to gain control. That would be disastrous.”
  • In the Tuesday interview, Mr. Kennedy said that in a federal government role, he would not do away with all vaccine research funding, but he emphasized the need to prioritize chronic disease over infectious disease.
  • “I think we need to reallocate a lot of energy and resources toward eliminating the causes of chronic disease and studying the causes — identifying the etiology and the origins of chronic diseases — rather than focusing on cures and treatments which benefit the pharmaceutical industry. They may alleviate some suffering in people, but wouldn’t it be better to eliminate the disease altogether, rather than having them be dependent on pharmaceutical products for the rest of their lives?”
  • Mr. Kennedy has also claimed that Covid was engineered to target Caucasian and Black people and spare those of Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. And he has said he would fight the next pandemic not by prioritizing the research and development of defenses, but instead by “building people’s immune systems.”
  • To many public health experts, that mission — laid out in no uncertain terms — is most worrisome.
