REALITY CHECK: RFK Jr. Can’t “Disown” His Extremism

Today, in a fundraising email to supporters, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ‘s campaign lauded January 6th insurrectionists and called them “activists” who have been “stripped of their Constitutional liberties.” After NBC reported the email, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign quickly tried to “disown” it and deny responsibility despite the fact that the email aligns with his views and past comments about pardoning insurrectionists and President Biden being a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump

In response, DNC spokesperson Matt Corridoni released the following statement:

“There’s one big problem here for RFK Jr. as he tries to disown his campaign’s embrace of January 6th insurrectionists – it captures his views perfectly. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed RFK Jr.’s candidacy: he’s spent the week claiming that President Biden is a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump; he’s being propped up by Trump’s biggest donor; and he’s been praised by the likes of Steve Bannon. What is surprising is that RFK Jr. and his campaign believe that everyone would be naive enough to look the other way when he spouts more MAGA talking points.”

RFK Jr’s support of January 6th insurrectionists:

On two occasions, RFK Jr. Said he would be open to pardoning January 6th rioters.

Washington Post: The Washington Post Reported That RFK Jr. Said He Would Consider Pardoning People Convicted In Connection To January 6. “As president, would you pardon or consider pardoning people convicted in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol?  Maybe. Kennedy said he would consider pardoning people convicted in connection to Jan. 6. In response to The Post’s questionnaire, Kennedy said, ‘If prosecutorial malfeasance is demonstrated, then yes. Otherwise, no.’”

Fox News: Asked About Pardoning January 6 Rioters, RFK Jr. Said, “I Would Take A Look At Those Cases.” CAVUTO: “He wants to pardon and thought it would be a good idea to pardon any of the January 6 rioters if elected. What do you think of that?” KENNEDY: “I would not comment on that. I — that’s not — that’s not something that I would comment on until I was president of the United States. I would take a look at those cases.”

The Hill: Asked Again If He Would Extend His Use Of Pardon Power To Those Who Were Jailed After Rioting On January 6, RFK Jr. Said He Would “Look At Individual Cases.” “‘I would pardon people,’ Kennedy said. ‘I intend to use the pardon power, and I intend to use it very quickly in office. I’m going to pardon Julian Assange. I’m going to pardon Edward Snowden. I may pardon Ross Ulbricht if I find that his prosecution was, that his sentence, his very lengthy sentence, was the result of making an example of him in order to punish Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.’ Cavuto then asked if he would extend that to those who rioted on Jan. 6 and are in jail. ‘I would look at individual cases,’ Kennedy said.”

RFK Jr.’s Communications Director Del Bigtree spoke at a “MAGA Freedom Rally” a block from the Capitol on January 6th.

CNN: Del Bigtree Spoke At The “MAGA Freedom Rally D.C” On January 6th, Which Was Held About A Block From The Capitol. “As the Trump faithful gathered around the Capitol on January 6, two conspiracy theories peddling in government mistrust converged: The fraudulent belief that the election was stolen, and the dangerous narrative that Covid-19 vaccinations are wildly unsafe.  ‘We’re being led off of a cliff,’ Del Bigtree, an anti-vaccine activist, told the crowd at the ‘MAGA Freedom Rally D.C.’ about a block from the Capitol.  ‘I wish I could tell you that Tony Fauci cares about your safety…’ he said. ‘I wish I could believe that voting machines worked… but none of this is happening.’  In the wake of Trump’s electoral defeat, some leaders of the anti-vaccine movement latched onto the ‘Stop the Steal’ crusade, advancing their own conspiratorial claims and, in some cases, promoting private business ventures, CNN has found. Some prominent anti-vaxxers say they directly coordinated with organizers of the DC rallies in January and pushed their message at other MAGA demonstrations, and on pro-Trump podcasts and social media platforms.  The anti-vaccine message may have found a particularly receptive audience among some fervent Trump supporters, many of whom flout wearing masks and contend the lethality of the virus is overblown… The rally at the US Capitol featuring Bigtree, advertised as ‘The MAGA Health Freedom Event of the Century,’ included other notable vaccine conspiracy theorists such as Mikki Willis, the filmmaker behind ‘Plandemic,’ which falsely suggests Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was responsible for the creation of the coronavirus.”

Legal Planet: RFK Jr. Comms Director Del Bigtree Promoted 2020 Election Conspiracies, Claiming At A January 6th Rally That The Country Was “Being Led Off Of A Cliff,” Adding That “I Wish I Could Believe That Voting Machines Worked… But None Of This Is Happening.” “Here’s what we know about the campaign’s chief communicator. Del Bigtree is an LA-based producer of conspiracy theory content. He leads the Informed Consent Action Network, or ICAN, a well-funded advocacy group that spreads vaccine misinformation, including baseless claims that childhood vaccines cause autism. He hosts the group’s podcast, ‘the Highwire,’ and he produced the 2016 pseudo-documentary ‘Vaxxed.’  He’s dabbled in election denial. He told the crowd at the ‘MAGA Freedom Rally D.C.’ near the Capitol on Jan. 6, ‘we’re being led off of a cliff.’  ‘I wish I could tell you that [Anthony] Fauci cares about your safety…’ he said. ‘I wish I could believe that voting machines worked… but none of this is happening.’”

April 2024: RFK Jr.’s campaign sent out a fundraising email that supported January 6th defendants.

NBC News: RFK Jr.’s Campaign Sent Out A Fundraising Email That Referred To Jan. 6 Defendants As “Activists” Who Have Been “Stripped Of Their Constitutional Liberties.” “The campaign of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent out with a fundraising email Thursday referring to Jan. 6 defendants as ‘activists’ who have been ‘stripped of their Constitutional liberties,’ echoing former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric about the 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol.  In the appeal sent to supporters, signed by ‘Team Kennedy,’ the campaign called for the exoneration of ‘political prisoner Julian Assange,’ the founder of WikiLeaks, suggesting he and Jan. 6 defendants are victims of prosecutorial abuse.  ‘This is the reality that every American Citizen faces — from Ed Snowden, to Julian Assange to the J6 activists sitting in a Washington DC jail cell stripped of their Constitutional liberties. Please help our campaign call out the illiberal actions of our very own government,’ the fundraising email read.”

NBC News: Hours Later, Campaign Spokesperson Stephanie Spear Said The Statement Was “An Error That Does Not Reflect Mr. Kennedy’s Views” And Claimed “It Was Inserted By A New Marketing Contractor And Slipped Through The Normal Approval Process.” “After publication of this piece, Kennedy spokesperson Stephanie Spear told NBC News that the language was an ‘error.’  ‘That statement was an error that does not reflect Mr. Kennedy’s views. It was inserted by a new marketing contractor and slipped through the normal approval process,’ she said.”

NEW: Americans Overwhelmingly Support President Biden’s Efforts To Slash Junk Fees and Lower Costs

In response to new polling showing voters in battleground states overwhelmingly support President Biden’s work to slash junk fees, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Americans overwhelmingly support President Biden’s work to slash junk fees and bring down costs – even two-thirds of Republicans in critical states back President Biden’s agenda to help Americans’ pocketbooks. But Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans only care about rigging the economy for the ultra-wealthy, not helping working families. The difference this November could not be clearer: While President Biden fights to bring down costs for hardworking Americans, Trump is rooting for the economy to crash, doubling down on his tax giveaways for the mega wealthy, and planning a rerun of his disastrous MAGAnomics agenda that left him with the worst jobs record since the Great Depression.”

NEW: Voters in battleground states overwhelmingly support President Biden’s agenda that includes slashing junk fees and lowering costs for hardworking families.

Navigator Research: “Nearly Nine in Ten Battleground Constituents Want Congress to Pass Laws Banning or Limiting Junk Fees”

“By a 79-point margin, nearly nine in ten battleground constituents support congressional action on junk fees.”

“Nearly three in four battleground constituents believe that it is important for Congress to address hidden and unexpected fees (73 percent), including 85 percent of Democrats and 67 percent of both independents and Republicans. An even larger share — 87 percent — support Congress passing a ban on hidden and unexpected fees altogether, while just 8 percent are opposed. Support for congressional action is strong across partisanship, including 95 percent of Democrats, 85 percent of independents, and 81 percent of Republicans.”

President Biden’s actions to cut junk fees are popular across the political spectrum.

Data For Progress: “We also tested support for the Junk Fee Prevention Act, which would ban hidden or extra fees on items like cable and cell phone bills, apartment rental applications, and concert and sporting event tickets. We find that the proposal is overwhelmingly popular, with support from 77% of voters — including 81% of Democrats, 78% of Independents, and 72% of Republicans.”

Morning Consult: “A new Morning Consult survey shows Biden’s proposals have bipartisan support, with clear majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents saying Congress should pass laws limiting these so-called ‘junk fees.’ Overall, about 3 in 4 Americans support the measures.”

Navigator Research: “More than three in five independents (64%) and Republicans (62%) support Biden and Democrats’ Junk Fees Prevention Act. … Even higher shares support their plan to lower limits on credit card late fees (74% independents, 68% Republicans).”

Global Strategy Group: “Costs remain Americans’ top concern, and most believe the Administration’s work to crack down on ‘price gouging’ and eliminate ‘hidden junk fees’ will lower costs for them. Two thirds (68%) say hidden junk fees are a growing problem, and 60% also believe ‘crack[ing] down on price gouging by banning hidden junk fees’ would be effective at lowering costs.”

While President Biden works to lower costs for hardworking families, Donald Trump’s MAGAnomics agenda is all about benefiting the ultra-wealthy – which he has promised to double down on in a second term.

Trump: “You’re all people that have a lot of money … You’re rich as hell. We’re gonna give you tax cuts.”

Washington Post: “Trump and his advisers have discussed deeper cuts to both individual and corporate tax rates that would build on his controversial 2017 tax law … Further cutting corporate taxes … would primarily benefit large firms.”

Bloomberg: “[Trump] intends to center his economic plans on extending and deepening the Republican tax cuts from 2017.”

Vanity Fair: “Donald Trump Wants to Give His Favorite Corporations Another Giant Tax Cut in a Second Term: Report”

CBS News: “Two years after Trump tax cuts, middle-class Americans are falling behind”

Forbes: “Trump Tax Cuts Helped Billionaires Pay Less Taxes Than The Working Class In 2018”

Economic Policy Institute: “The TCJA overwhelmingly benefited the rich and corporations while overlooking working families”

Trump is actively rooting for the U.S. economy to crash for his own political gain.

Trump: “And when there’s a crash — I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover.”
Daily Beast: “Donald Trump admitted Monday that he wants a severe economic downturn to happen during the next year, because it will help his odds of winning the presidential election.”

Trump’s Cabinet 2025: Fellow MAGA Loser Kevin McCarthy As Chief of Staff

Donald Trump surrounds himself with the most out-of-touch extremists he can find – and is already planning to fill his Cabinet with far-right MAGA fanatics ready to push his dangerous agenda. As Trump floats fellow MAGA loser Kevin McCarthy as chief of staff, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“There’s nobody better than Kevin McCarthy at bending the knee to Donald Trump, pushing his extreme and unpopular MAGA agenda, and then getting humiliated time and time again all the same. McCarthy repeatedly backed Trump’s plans to ban abortion nationwide, threaten our democracy, and rip away affordable health care – and now he’s ready to once again get used by Trump to push the same dangerous platform. If a loser like McCarthy is the best Trump can do for a sidekick, then even Trump knows he’s in deep trouble ahead of November.”

McCarthy is reportedly a “top candidate” to be chief of staff in Trump’s possible second-term Cabinet because of his “understanding of Capitol Hill”…

Bloomberg: “Ousted US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is seen as a top candidate to serve as chief of staff. McCarthy … has assets that Trump views positively including an understanding of Capitol Hill, federal agencies and budgets.”

… the same Kevin McCarthy who got ousted as speaker of the House by his fellow Republicans after a disastrous speakership.

Reuters: “Kevin McCarthy’s wild ride as US House speaker ends in historic fall”

McCarthy did lasting damage to our democracy by voting to overturn the results of the 2020 election and subsequently embracing Donald Trump after the January 6 insurrection.

Vanity Fair: “Kevin McCarthy cast a vote that should forever define his legacy. Along with 138 of his Republican colleagues in the House, and eight more in the Senate, the then-minority leader voted against certifying the election results on January 6, 2021—even after armed Donald Trump supporters besieged the Capitol to disrupt that very process. It was a shameful act, and one that belied his behind-the-scenes exhortations that the former president put a stop to the chaos and violence. But McCarthy did it anyway—voted against democracy, voted against impeachment, and truckled to Trump at Mar-a-Lago weeks after the Capitol attack—for the same reason he does everything: ambition.”

The Atlantic: “Kevin McCarthy’s Loyalty to Trump Got Him Nothing”

“[McCarthy] quickly moved to mend the breach [after January 6], flying to Mar-a-Lago in late January 2021 to prostrate himself. … Over the next two years, he remained close to Trump, and courted the most hard-core Trump supporters. Faced with the challenge of how to handle Marjorie Taylor Greene, the new representative with a slate of appalling statements and passionate conservative support, McCarthy chose to only lightly castigate and then align with Greene. Those moves were cowardly and often self-debasing.”

Wall Street Journal: “McCarthy Tries to Mend Fences With Trump”

“House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy worked to patch up his relationship with Donald Trump in a meeting in Florida on Thursday, a sign of the former president’s continued sway over the party despite his loss in November and his impeachment this month over the Capitol riot.”

MSNBC Opinion: “What was McCarthy’s previous low point, prior to his ouster? Because there are just so many to choose from.”

“Was it on Jan. 6, 2021, when McCarthy joined 138 other House Republicans voting to try to overturn the 2020 election result, after — I repeat, after — an armed mob of Donald Trump supporters had laid waste to the Capitol?

“Was it on Jan. 28, 2021, when McCarthy made a pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago, Florida, to bend his knee to Trump, and then released a photo of the two of them smiling together, just weeks after he had publicly declared that the former president ‘bears responsibility’ for the attack on Congress?

“Was it on Jan. 7 of this year, when McCarthy finally secured the speaker’s gavel on the 15th House ballot, ‘more rounds of voting than any other time since before the Civil War’?”

McCarthy and Trump want to ban abortion nationwide.

CNN: “McCarthy told CNN he backs legislation to codify a 15-week [national] ban on abortion, saying: ‘I’d support that.’”

McCarthy and Trump both have yearslong records of floating cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

Washington Post: “House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said that if Republicans win control of the House the GOP will use raising the debt limit as leverage to force spending cuts — which could include cuts to Medicare and Social Security.”

McCarthy and Trump support repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Washington Post: “Rep. McCarthy: Repealing Obamacare is ‘easier and faster’ than replacing it”

ICYMI: The Washington Post: The Former Trump Aides Who Would Rather Not See Him on the Ballot

Key Point: “Several of Trump’s former top advisers and allies have refused to endorse their former boss’s campaign, including former vice president Mike Pence, former attorney general William P. Barr and former White House chief of staff John Kelly.”

The Washington Post: The former Trump aides who would rather not see him on the ballot

By: Mariana Alfaro

  • Donald Trump may have defeated his primary challengers and secured enough delegates to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee this year, but a striking number of his former aides publicly said they would rather not see his name on the ballot in November.
  • Several of Trump’s former top advisers and allies have refused to endorse their former boss’s campaign, including former vice president Mike Pence, former attorney general William P. Barr and former White House chief of staff John Kelly.
  • Other former members of Trump’s inner circle, including former defense secretary Mark T. Esper, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and former White House counsel Ty Cobb, went further in their criticism of Trump by saying they’re not going to vote for him in November — and that they’re open to casting a ballot for President Biden instead.
  • After a dutiful four years serving as Trump’s No. 2, Pence split with Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol in which Pence was targeted by the mob of pro-Trump supporters who chanted “Hang Mike Pence.”
  • Former defense secretary Mark T. Esper told HBO host Bill Maher that “there’s no way” he’ll support Trump in November because he believes his former boss “is a threat to democracy.”
  • Esper previously said on multiple occasions that he wouldn’t support Trump during the Republican primary process, telling CNN in July that Trump is not “fit for office because he puts himself first, and I think anybody running for office should put the country first.”
  • “Any elected official needs to meet some basic criteria: They need to be able to put country over self. They need to have a certain level of integrity and principle,” Esper said. “They need to be able to reach across the aisle and bring people together and unite the country.” “Donald Trump doesn’t meet those marks for me,” he added.
  • “I will say my door is completely shut to voting for Donald Trump,” [Cassidy Hutchinson] said in a November interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, President Biden’s former White House press secretary. Hutchinson, who went on to write a memoir about her time in the Trump White House, said she thinks “everybody should vote for Joe Biden if they want our democracy to survive.”
  • “He has never cared about America, its citizens, its future or anything but himself,” Cobb wrote in an email to The Post last year. “In fact, as history well shows from his divisive lies, as well as from his unrestrained contempt for the rule of law and his related crimes, his conduct and mere existence have hastened the demise of democracy and of the nation.”
  • Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as a White House communication director for Trump in 2020 and is now a host for ABC’s “The View” and a CNN commentator, told The Post last month that Trump “is a threat to democracy, and I will never support him.”
  • [William] Barr has repeatedly said that Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election, despite his claims that the race was stolen from him.

Thanks to Trump, Florida’s Extreme Abortion Ban Will Rip Away Access to Care for Women Throughout the South

With another of Trump’s extreme abortion bans going into effect in Florida, access to reproductive care will be ripped away from millions of women not just in Florida, but throughout the South. This wouldn’t be possible without Trump proudly “killing” Roe v. Wade, and he and his MAGA allies are actively plotting to take this agenda nationwide and ban abortion in all 50 states.

“Donald Trump is responsible for the extreme abortion ban in Florida and those across the country. It’s not just Florida: Women throughout the South will face the brunt of this cruel attack on their freedoms, but what’s worse is his MAGA allies already have plans to take this agenda nationwide by enacting a national abortion ban with or without the help of Congress,” said DNC spokesperson Jackie Bush. “The stakes in this election couldn’t be higher, and come November, voters in the South and across the country will head to the polls knowing that President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates fighting to protect reproductive freedom.”

After Donald Trump paved the way for Roe v. Wade to be overturned, nearly every state in the South enacted an extreme abortion ban.

Alabama: “Abortions became almost entirely illegal in Alabama on June 24. A 2019 state abortion ban took effect making it a felony to perform an abortion at any stage of pregnancy, with no exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.”

Arkansas: “Arkansas bans nearly all abortions after Roe v. Wade overturned”

Georgia: “Georgia abortion ban remains in effect after state Supreme Court ruling”

Kentucky: “Abortion is banned in almost all circumstances.”

Louisiana: “Louisiana abortion ban preserved after lawmakers kill bill to call public vote”

Mississippi: “How abortion ban has impacted Mississippi one year after Roe v. Wade was overturned”

Oklahoma: “Abortion is banned in almost all circumstances.”

South Carolina: “South Carolina’s new all-male highest court reverses course on abortion, upholding strict 6-week ban”

Tennessee: “Amid uncertainty and anger, Tennessee’s abortion ban takes effect”

Texas: “Teen pregnancies on the rise for the first time in 15 years after Texas bans abortion, study shows.”

Women across the South will lose critical access to reproductive care because of Florida’s extreme abortion ban.

The 19th: “Florida’s new restrictions will chip away at the little abortion access left in the South”

Capital B: “Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned 1973’s Roe v. Wade decision last summer, access to abortion in the South has become increasingly limited. It’s a region where many of the country’s strictest abortion laws have taken hold, largely pushed by Republican lawmakers.”

Associated Press: “‘A six-week ban is a really substantial shock to practical abortion access across the South,’ said Caitlin Myers, an economics professor at Middlebury College in Vermont who studies abortion access.”

CNN: “If Florida’s high court rules to restrict abortion access there, it would affect more than a third of abortions in the South and nearly 1 in 10 nationwide.”

Trump not only brags about overturning Roe v. Wade he is proudly taking credit for extreme abortions bans throughout the country.

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Claims Credit for All Abortion Bans”

Business Insider: “Trump boasts he’s ‘proud’ about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, the issue that has become ballot-box poison for Republicans”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”

Trump campaign radio ad: “And Trump nominated conservative judges, leading to Roe v. Wade being overturned.”

FWIW: “This week, we found more evidence that the Trump campaign has no interest in ‘moderating’ on the issue of abortion. On Monday, his team began running new Facebook video ads targeting voters in Iowa, referring to Trump as ‘THE MOST Pro-Life President in history.’”

Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”

Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”

DNC Statement on Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Saying Biden is a Bigger Threat to Democracy than Donald Trump

In response to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appearing on CNN and saying that President Biden is a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump, DNC Senior Advisor Mary Beth Cahill released the following statement:

“With a straight face Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that Joe Biden is a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump because he was barred from pushing conspiracy theories online. There is no comparison to summoning a mob to the Capitol and promising to be a dictator on day one. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. laid to rest tonight any doubts that he’s a spoiler candidate by pushing his MAGA talking points in prime time.”

ICYMI: The Guardian: RNC Plan for Christina Bobb To Head ‘Election Integrity’ Unit Raises Alarms

Key Point: “Bobb is a former Trump lawyer and ex-reporter for the far-right One America News Network, who gained prominence after Trump’s 2020 loss for promoting bogus fraud charges in Arizona, Wisconsin and elsewhere, and was part of Trump-backed efforts to substitute fake electors for ones that Joe Biden won in some states.”

The Guardian: RNC plan for 2020 denialist to head ‘election integrity’ unit raises alarms

By: Peter Stone

  • As Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has cemented its hold on the Republican National Committee (RNC), alarms are being raised about the organisation’s tapping of the fervent election denialist Christina Bobb to run an “election integrity” unit.
  • Bobb is a former Trump lawyer and ex-reporter for the far-right One America News Network, who gained prominence after Trump’s 2020 loss for promoting bogus fraud charges in Arizona, Wisconsin and elsewhere, and was part of Trump-backed efforts to substitute fake electors for ones that Joe Biden won in some states.
  • Bobb helped spread phoney voting fraud claims with Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani and the former campaign operative Mike Roman, both of whom along with Trump and others face charges in Fulton county, Georgia, of conspiring to overturn Biden’s win there; Bobb was not charged.
  • “By designating Bobb to the RNC post, they’re beginning to promulgate the same false narrative of widespread election fraud that we saw in 2020 and 2021 but way earlier,” said John Jones, a former federal judge in Pennsylvania and now president of Dickinson College.
  • “There’s a concept known as illusory truth,” he added. “If you keep saying these same falsehoods over and over, people begin to believe they’re true, and it has the potential to morph into violence. That puts judges, prosecutors and others at risk.”
  • The RNC’s hiring of Bobb comes as Trump keeps falsely claiming that the 2020 election was rigged and talks up new efforts this year to “guard the vote” to ferret out potential fraud. Experts have conclusively said fraud was not a factor in Trump’s loss by over 7 million votes, and stressed that historically voting fraud has been minimal.
  • The former Republican congressman Charlie Dent said the RNC’s hiring of Bobb “is a further indication of how the RNC has not only become an arm of the Trump campaign, but an outlet for the most extreme elements of the election denial movement”. Likewise, the ex-Republican congressman Dave Trott predicted: “Bobb will be leading the charge and saying the election was rigged if Trump loses.”
  • But Bobb’s litany of baseless fraud claims as she worked with key Trump allies to overturn the 2020 election results, shadow her new RNC role. For instance, Bobb used her perch at One America News Network (OAN) to spread bogus claims of fraud that led to a defamation lawsuit against her and OAN by the voting technology firm Dominion; Bobb and OAN have both denied any wrongdoing.
  • Separately Bobb signed a letter falsely certifying to the justice department on Trump’s behalf in 2022 that after a “diligent search” he had returned all the classified documents the special counsel Jack Smith later charged the former president with illegally taking to Mar-a-Lago after he left the White House.
  • Still, some lawyers and election veterans are troubled by the RNC’s hiring of Bobb given her history of election denialism and Trump’s obsession with debunked claims of fraud in 2020. “I don’t think it’s a good thing when a major party hires fringe characters who don’t understand how elections work,” said David Becker, the executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research.
  • Looking ahead, Chioma Chukwu, the deputy executive director of the watchdog group American Oversight, called Bobb’s hiring by the RNC “a dangerous sign of how entrenched the election denial movement has become on the right”.
  • “Elevating Bobb – who continues to push baseless lies about voter fraud – to a top post focused on ‘election integrity’ serves no purpose other than to sow chaos and confusion in November, allowing partisan actors to cry ‘foul’ if their preferred candidate loses.”

ICYMI: Los Angeles Times: Cesar Chavez’s Family Wants Nothing To Do With Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Presidential Campaign

Key Point: “When we saw Bobby Kennedy begin to use images of my father, and then when we heard about this event in L.A., it really prompted us to stand up and to make sure that people understood that the Chavez family does not support his campaign.”

Los Angeles Times: Cesar Chavez’s family wants nothing to do with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign

By: Benjamin Oreskes

  • “When we saw Bobby Kennedy begin to use images of my father, and then when we heard about this event in L.A., it really prompted us to stand up and to make sure that people understood that the Chavez family does not support his campaign,” Paul Chavez, Fernando’s brother, told The Times.
  • “We’ve never seen anybody go as far as using that image for political gain,” Andres Chavez, Paul’s son, said of Kennedy’s campaign event invitation. Fernando and Paul, as well as Andres — who runs the National Chavez Center in Keene, Calif. — said they are endorsing President Biden for reelection, and that if Cesar were alive, he would do the same.
  • Biden keeps a bust of the labor leader in the Oval Office, and Chavez’s granddaughter Julie Chavez Rodriguez, who once organized strawberry pickers and later worked for President Obama, now serves as Biden’s campaign manager.
  • Relatives of Chavez said it was painful to speak out because the Kennedy and Chavez clans remain closely connected — apart from Kennedy Jr.
  • Now, with the 2024 presidential election just months away, Chavez family members said they fear that in a close contest, any support for Kennedy could help Republican Donald Trump regain the White House. “I’m kind of horrified and saddened about that,” said Fernando Chavez, who added that he hasn’t stayed in touch with Kennedy Jr. since they worked together decades ago.
  • Fernando and others pointed [out] how badly farmworkers were hit by COVID-19, partly fueled by rampant disinformation among Latinos about the vaccine’s efficacy. The Cesar Chavez Foundation worked to vaccinate farmworkers, Andres Chavez said, and Kennedy Jr.’s views on vaccines horrified him.
  • “When Trump and Kennedy were spreading misinformation about vaccines in the pandemic, people were dying,” Andres Chavez said. “I don’t think my grandfather would stand by anybody who would be spreading this misinformation — knowing that farmworkers and Latinos were among the most impacted.”

Trump’s Crooks, Cranks, and Convicts: Trump’s Handpicked RNC Chair Michael Whatley Is an Election Denying MAGA Extremist

This week, we’re highlighting some of the crooks, cranks, and convicts that make up Donald Trump’s MAGA GOP. As Trump-installed RNC chair Michael Whatley makes election denial a litmus test in the Republican Party, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump hand picked Michael Whatley to take over the RNC because he parroted Trump’s baseless lies about the 2020 election, and Whatley is returning the favor by making election denialism a key litmus test to join the GOP. Putting an election denying extremist like Whatley in charge of the RNC makes it clear that the future of our democracy is on the ballot in this election – and the American people will once again reject Trump and his MAGA allies this November.”

Let’s be clear: Michael Whatley was backed by Donald Trump to take over the RNC because of his history of election denial.

CNN: “RNC staffers and new hires asked whether they believe the 2020 election was stolen”

Washington Post: “Those seeking employment at the Republican National Committee after a Donald Trump-backed purge of the committee this month have been asked in job interviews if they believe the 2020 election was stolen, according to people familiar with the interviews, making the false claim a litmus test of sorts for hiring.”

New York Times: “Trump’s Man at the R.N.C. Will Face Pressure to Satisfy His Election Lies”

New York Magazine: “Trump Taps Election Deniers Lara Trump, Michael Whatley to Lead RNC”

Associated Press: “In pushing Michael Whatley as the next leader of the Republican National Committee, Donald Trump zeroed in on the North Carolina GOP chairman’s dedication to ‘election integrity,’ baselessly suggesting he would ensure the 2024 race ‘can’t be stolen.’”

Whatley is a dangerous election denier who parroted Trump’s baseless lies about the 2020 election.

New York Times: “Mr. Trump likes Mr. Whatley for one overwhelming reason, according to people who have discussed him with the former president: He is ‘a stop the steal guy,’ as one of the people described him. He endorses Mr. Trump’s false claims about mass voter fraud … Mr. Whatley has baselessly claimed that election security efforts from Republicans in North Carolina stopped Democrats from cheating.”

CNN: “Likely frontrunner for RNC chair parroted Trump’s 2020 election lies”

“Michael Whatley, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, shared false claims that Republican observers were prevented from accessing polling locations and repeatedly said Democratic cities in swing states were engaged in ‘massive fraud.’”

“His elevation to RNC chair could give Trump a loyalist more willing to devote resources to pursue future voter fraud claims in court should they arise.”

“‘Regardless of how these lawsuits come out around the country with the presidential race we do know that there was massive fraud that took place,’ Whatley said in one late November 2020 interview on local North Carolina radio. ‘We know that it took place in places like Milwaukee and Detroit and Philadelphia.’”

Raleigh News & Observer: “Whatley has frequently repeated Trump’s false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.”

Vice: “North Carolina Republican chair Michael Whatley falsely claimed in February that ‘we certainly saw evidence of voting irregularities, of election counting irregularities in a number of places around the country,’ and invented the claim that the reason Trump won North Carolina was his state party’s vigilance against Democrats’ attempts to cheat.”

Whatley has failed to condemn a state House GOP candidate with ties to a neo-Nazi organization.

Raleigh News & Observer: “NC GOP chair stays quiet about candidate’s Nazi ties after failed effort at removal from ballot”

“This year, however, the state GOP, led by Chair Michael Whatley, has remained silent on a candidate with ties to a neo-Nazi organization.

“Joseph Gibson III, a Rockingham County podcaster with past felony convictions, is running for a state House seat. … After Gibson was approved to be on the ballot, Whatley — who is now running to be chair of the Republican National Committee with former President Donald Trump’s support — did not publicly condemn his candidacy.”

“The Anti-Defamation League found that Gibson had ties to the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement and referred to him as a ‘white supremacist and anti-government extremist.’

“The ADL’s report said Gibson participated in livestream events hosted by the NSM and in one instance messaged the channel saying ‘88,’ a dog whistle used by white supremacists to mean ‘Heil Hitler.’”

Trump’s inner circle is filled with election deniers, conspiracy theorists, and convicted felons.

Axios: “Trump eyes convicts and conspiracists for 2024 reunion”

“Sidelined characters from former President Trump’s past campaigns — ‘crazies,’ some of his top advisers call them — are reattaching themselves to his inner circle now that he’s locked up the Republican nomination. … ex-advisers, conspiracy theorists and convicted felons are now knocking on the campaign’s door — and some are getting in.”

New York Times: “Paul Manafort, a top adviser to Donald J. Trump’s 2016 campaign who was pardoned by the former president at the end of his White House term, is in discussions to return to help with the Republican National Convention.”

“Mr. Manafort was found guilty in late August 2018 of a range of financial crimes, including tax and bank fraud.

“In September 2018, Mr. Manafort pleaded guilty to additional charges brought by Mr. Mueller and agreed to cooperate. But as the case proceeded, Mr. Mueller said that Mr. Manafort had not been truthful in his cooperation, breaching that plea deal.”

Washington Post: “Former president Donald Trump is preparing to bring back into his campaign fold a man convicted of multiple crimes and whom a bipartisan Senate report labeled a ‘grave counterintelligence threat’ because of his ties to a Russian spy.”

The Guardian: “Headache for campaign team as Trump gets the band back together”

New York Times: “Former President Donald J. Trump recently told aides to hire Laura Loomer, a far-right and anti-Muslim activist with a history of expressing bigoted views, for a campaign role, according to four people familiar with the plans. Mr. Trump met with Ms. Loomer recently and directed advisers to give her a role in support of his candidacy.”

Trump-Backed Michigan Politician’s Unhinged Racist Tweet About… A Men’s Basketball Team?

In response to Donald Trump-backed Michigan State Rep. Matt Maddock spewing racist rhetoric about the Gonzaga men’s basketball team, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“Matt Maddock decided to spew disgusting, racist conspiracy theories about a college basketball team rather than take two seconds to realize what was going on — unsurprising from a Republican who Donald Trump has given a ‘complete and total endorsement’ to and said he’s with ‘all the way.’ Both Maddock and his wife already have plenty of experience parroting Trump’s dangerous rhetoric: they both went all in on Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen and Maddock’s wife was even part of the fake elector scheme in Michigan to overturn the will of the voters. Republicans shouldn’t expect anything less than another total loss at the ballot box next November.”

Maddock welcomed the Gonzaga men’s basketball team by spewing Trump’s dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Trump proudly endorsed Maddock while he was running to be Michigan House Leader, saying he was “with [him] all the way” because he supports the Big Lie.

Detroit News: “Former President Donald Trump threw his support Thursday behind Michigan Rep. Matt Maddock, one of his most committed followers in the Legislature, as Maddock campaigns to be the next state House GOP leader. Maddock, a second-term Republican lawmaker from Milford who has advanced Trump’s unproven claims that the 2020 election was stolen, posted Thursday a photo of a printed Detroit News story about his run to be the caucus’s leader next term. The document appeared to be signed and edited by Trump. ‘I am with you all the way,’ the message above Trump’s apparent signature said. ‘Also, you have a great wife.’

If Michigan drains the Lansing swamp, it will take a leader like Matt Maddock to do it,’ Trump’s statement said. ‘Matt is running for re-election. He has my complete and total endorsement. We need leadership in Michigan who will investigate and document the 2020 voter fraud, the crime of the century.”

For Maddock and his wife Meshawn, parroting Trump’s baseless lies about the 2020 election is a family affair. Meshawn took part in the 2020 fake elector scheme in Michigan at the Trump campaign’s command.

CNN: In a December 2020 radio interview reviewed by CNN’s KFile, Meshawn Maddock, one of the 16 fake electors in Michigan charged by the state attorney general for the alleged scheme, detailed the Trump campaign-directed plan and said the crucial decision on which electors to use would ultimately rest with a constitutional attorney and Vice President Mike Pence and Congress… Maddock, the wife of a conservative member of the state legislature, would go on to serve as co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party after the 2020 election and preside over historic losses for Michigan Republicans in the 2022 midterms.”

“Despite Trump losing the state by more than 150,000 votes, Maddock and 15 others signed phony certificates claiming to be the legitimate electors from the state just days before the interview and attempted to enter their state capitol to deliver the votes.”

Michigan Advance: “Outside of the building, a small group of Trump supporters rallied, with some Republicans staging an attempt to submit to police at the Capitol a fake slate of GOP electors, which is not legal. Among them were state Reps. Daire Rendon (R-Lake City) and Matt Maddock (R-Milford). Both signed on to the longshot Texas lawsuit that sought to toss election results in Michigan and three other states. Seventeen other Michigan lawmakers supported the case. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected it on Friday.”

Michigan Advance: “Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock said former President Donald Trump’s campaign directed the operation to have 16 fake Electoral College delegates submit a certificate declaring Trump the winner of the state’s electoral votes in December 2020. ‘We fought to seat the electors. The Trump campaign asked us to do that,’ Maddock is heard saying at a public event last week organized by the right-wing group, Stand Up Michigan, per audio obtained by CNN. ‘I’m under a lot of scrutiny for that today.’”
