REMINDER: Medication Abortion Is STILL Under Attack Nationwide by Trump and MAGA Republicans

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, DNC National Press Secretary Emilia Rowland released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling that the MAGA extremists who sued the FDA in an attempt to ban medication abortion nationwide lacked standing does not change the dire stakes of this election for reproductive freedom. It does not change the fact that because of Trump, millions of women in states across the country cannot access the health care they need. It does not change the fact that Trump bragged about overturning Roe and thinks women suffering extreme physical, mental, and emotional harm because they can’t access reproductive health care is a ‘beautiful thing to watch.’ And it does not change the fact that if elected, Trump and his allies want to effectively ban abortion nationwide with or without the help of Congress and the courts. This lawsuit was just one part of Republicans’ relentless efforts to ban abortion in all 50 states and rip away access to reproductive health care — from safe treatment of miscarriages to IVF and birth control. The only way to stop the MAGA movement’s attacks on our freedoms is to turn out the vote in November to win Democratic majorities in Congress and reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris — who will never stop fighting to guarantee women in every state have access to the care they need.”

Louisiana governor Jeff Landry signed into law a bill that criminalizes possession of mifepristone and misoprostol — the first of its kind in the country. This ruling does nothing to protect Louisiana women from this ban.

Associated Press: “Louisiana governor signs bill making two abortion drugs controlled dangerous substances”

“First-of-its-kind legislation that classifies two abortion-inducing drugs as controlled and dangerous substances was signed into law Friday by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry. The Republican governor announced his signing of the bill in Baton Rouge a day after it gained final legislative passage in the state Senate. The measure affects the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, which are used in medication abortions, the most common method of abortion in the U.S.”

CNN: “Louisiana Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill Friday classifying the abortion-inducing drugs misoprostol and mifepristone as Schedule IV controlled dangerous substances, a first-of-its-kind law that places them in the same category as narcotics and depressants.”

The Atlantic: “Abortion pills in Louisiana are now in the same category as drugs such as opioids and Xanax—medicines that are thought to be at risk of abuse—even though the medical community and the FDA widely consider mifepristone and misoprostol to be safe.”

“Mifepristone and misoprostol have routine medical uses, such as inducing childbirth, stopping postpartum hemorrhages, and treating miscarriages. Under the new law, doctors must have a specific license to prescribe the drugs, and the pills would need to be stored in special facilities that rural clinics may find difficult to access. Experts predict that confusion about the law and fear of prosecution will have a chilling effect on patients and health-care providers.”

Trump and anti-abortion extremists won’t stop with banning and criminalizing abortion — they are coming for every aspect of women’s reproductive health care and even opening the door to the death penalty for abortion patients.

HuffPost: “Texas GOP Appears to Put Death Penalty for Abortion Patients on 2024 Wishlist”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Business Insider: “Trump boasts he’s ‘proud’ about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, the issue that has become ballot-box poison for Republicans”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”

Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”

Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”

Rolling Stone: “Inside the MAGA Plan to Attack Birth Control, Surveil Women and Ban the Abortion Pill”

“The attacks on mifepristone and resurrection of Comstock stand out as particularly harmful proposals, but they are only two of the dozens of ways the Republicans behind Project 2025 envision restricting access to abortion and contraception if they win the White House next year. Elsewhere in the document, there are proposals to eliminate the morning-after pill from the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate under the rationale that it is a ‘potential abortifacient.’”

Interviewer: “Do you support any restrictions on a person’s right to contraception?

Trump: “We’re looking at that, and I’m going to have a policy on that very shortly and I think it’s something that you’ll find interesting.”

Interviewer: “That suggests that you may want to support some restrictions? Like the morning after pill?

Trump: “You know, things really do have a lot to do with the states. And some states are going to have different policies than others.”

Meanwhile, President Biden and Vice President Harris are defending reproductive freedom at every turn.

NBC News: “Biden administration announces new abortion initiatives on Roe anniversary”

Democrats are leading the charge to restore and protect reproductive freedom.

New York Times: “Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, plans next month to fast-track a Senate vote on a bill to protect access to contraception nationwide, the start of an election-year push to highlight Republicans’ record of opposing reproductive rights that voters view as at risk of being stripped away.”

Forbes: “‘AAPI businesses have benefited from a stronger economy, with over 2.91 million AAPI owned businesses and counting, fueling job creation and economic growth in their communities,’ [said Chiling Tong, President and CEO of the National Asian Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (National ACE).”

New York Times: “Republicans argue that this will benefit small businesses. In fact, a large majority of small-business owners already have personal tax rates below 25 percent. This provision would aid a small group of developers, investors and other tycoons who work in professions or industries where it is relatively easy to set up pass-through businesses. Like, yes, Mr. Trump and his family, who make their money from one such industry: real estate.”

Vox: “Trump said this tax break was for small businesses. It’s giving $17 billion to millionaires this year”

“If many average Americans aren’t noticing or loving the tax cut bill yet, it might be understandable — it benefits the wealthy by design. And a congressional report released this week shows that one specific new deduction for so-called ‘pass-through’ companies is heavily benefiting the rich. … The Republican tax bill cut the corporate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent and disproportionately benefits corporations and the wealthy.”

La administración de Trump dejó atrás a los propietarios de pequeñas empresas de comundiades minoritarias durante la pandemia.

Univision: “El entorno cercano a Trump se beneficia del programa de préstamos a pequeñas empresas (aún no siendo pequeñas)”

NPR: “But a new report from the Small Business Administration’s inspector general found that businesses owned by people of color may not have received loans as intended under the Paycheck Protection Program. There was no evidence, the report said, that the SBA told lenders to prioritize business owners in ‘underserved’ markets, including business owners of color — something the CARES Act had specifically instructed the SBA to do.”

Y Trump uso repetidamente una retórica anti asiática durante la pandemia, a la que siguió un aumento de los crímenes de odio, la violencia y las reacciones violentas contra las empresas propiedad de la AANHPI.

CNBC: “‘We were scared’: Asian-owned small businesses devastated by double whammy of Covid and hate crime”

Small Business is Booming for Communities of Color Thanks to President Biden and Vice President Harris

Today, President Biden and the Small Business Administration announced that a record 18 million new business applications have been filed under the Biden-Harris administration — the most applications under any president in history. Thanks to President Biden’s economic agenda, the economy is growing from the bottom up and middle out, and business owners of color are getting the help they need to serve their communities and bolster economic growth across the country.

NEW: The number of small business applications filed under the Biden-Harris administration reached a record 18 MILLION

Statement from President Biden: “Today, my Administration announced over 18 million new business applications since I took office, each one an act of hope and confidence. We’ve had the three strongest years for new businesses on record and the small business boom that has powered our economic comeback continues.”

Statement, Small Business Administration: “Since the start of the Biden-Harris administration, there have been 18.1 million new business applications with an average 443,000 filed each month – a rate over 90% faster than pre-pandemic averages. Having already achieved the first, second, and third strongest years of new business applications on record, President Biden’s economy remains on track for its fourth consecutive year of historic business filings. The U.S. economy has grown more under President Biden than at this point in any presidential administration in the last quarter century.”

President Biden’s economic agenda has helped hardworking Americans and business owners, especially business owners of color, get back on track since the pandemic.

Statement from President Biden: “Since the pandemic, Black business ownership has more than doubled, Hispanic business ownership is up 40 percent, and women own a record share of businesses.”

Let’s not forget every Republican voted against President Biden’s historic American Rescue Plan that helped hundreds of thousands of restaurants and child care programs stay open.

White House Fact Sheet: “The American Rescue Plan also includes a Small Business Opportunity Fund to provide growth capital to main street small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas, including minority-owned businesses”

Statement from President Biden: “Every Republican in Congress voted against vital American Rescue Plan relief that helped 100,000 restaurants and bars and 225,000 child care programs stay open, and a State Small Business Credit Initiative that is helping businesses launch across the country.”

Trump sided with big corporations and greedy Wall Street execs over small businesses during his presidency — and he’s promised to do it again if reelected.

Trump’s administration left behind small business owners of color during the pandemic.

And Trump repeatedly spewed anti-Asian rhetoric during the pandemic, which was followed by an uptick in hate crimes, violence, and backlash against AANHPI-owned businesses.

REPORT: Donald Trump Wants To Give Big Corporations Tax Cuts Worth More Than The Government’s Entire Budget For K-12 Schools

Following a new report on Trump’s plan for a second tax scam, DNC National Press Secretary ⁨Emilia Rowland⁩ released the following statement:

“First – Donald Trump put CEOs ahead of hard-working Americans with his corporate tax scam that lined the pockets of Wall Street executives, union busters, and price gougers at the expense of everyone else. Now, Trump and his MAGA minions in Congress want to give the largest corporations a tax handout larger than the K-12 budget at the Department of Education.  Their plan to force American taxpayers to foot the bill for a $48 billion handout to the largest 100 corporations – even as corporate profits hit record highs in 2023 – would be a disaster for everyone but Trump’s billionaire donors and CEO cronies. Meanwhile, President Biden has worked tirelessly to bring down costs for American families and reverse Trump’s tax scam that forces teachers and firefighters to pay more in taxes than billionaire CEOs. The contrast could not be clearer.”

Trump’s proposed tax cuts would:

  • Give the largest 100 U.S. companies (the Fortune 100) a total estimated annual tax cut of $48 billion — more than the entire U.S. Department of Education K-12 budget for 2024. They reported $1.1 trillion in profits in their last annual report.
  • Give the five largest drug makers—Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Pfizer, AbbVie, and Bristol-Meyers Squibb—an annual total estimated tax cut of $3.1 billion, while gutting President Biden’s landmark victory in the Inflation Reduction Act that requires drug manufacturers to negotiate prices to bring down costs for consumers. They reported over $50 billion in profits.
  • Give five of the largest Wall Street banks—JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs—an annual total estimated tax cut of $4.1 billion. They reported nearly $113 billion in profits.
  • Give five of the largest grocery companies—Kroger, Costco, Albertsons, Target, and Walmart—an annual total estimated tax cut of nearly $1.7 billion. They reported over $29 billion in profits.

Under Trump’s plan, the top 10 corporations would receive nearly $25 billion in annual tax cuts, even though they already reported more than $520 billion in profit.

Center for American Progress: “This nearly $25 billion in annual tax cuts for just 10 corporations is more than double what the federal government spends on cancer and Alzheimer’s research combined.

“Give 10 of the largest U.S. companies alone, including Meta, Comcast, and JPMorgan Chase, a total estimated annual tax cut of $23 billion. They reported more than $520 billion in profits.”

The five largest oil and gas companies would receive $2.5 billion in annual tax giveaways.

Center for American Progress: “Americans upset about the price of gasoline this summer should also know that the 15 percent corporate tax rate would give America’s five largest oil companies an annual total tax cut of $2.5 billion. These companies (Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Marathon-ConocoPhilips, Phillips 66, and Valero Energy) reported more than $90 billion in profits last year.”

President Biden wants to raise the corporate tax rate to 28%, which would raise $1.1 trillion over 10 years to reinvest in the American people and help reduce the deficit.

Center for American Progress: “President Joe Biden, by contrast, would raise the corporate tax rate to 28 percent—halfway between the current 21 percent rate and the previous 35 percent rate.”

Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2025: “Ensures Corporations Pay Their Fair Share”

“The Budget increases the rates that corporations pay in taxes on their profits. Corporations received an enormous tax break in 2017, cutting effective U.S. tax rates for U.S. corporations to a low of less than 10 percent. While their profits soared, their investment in their workers and the economy did not. Their shareholders and top executives reaped the benefits, without the promised trickle down to workers, consumers, or communities. The Budget would set the corporate tax rate at 28 percent, still well below the 35 percent rate that prevailed prior to the 2017 tax law. In addition, the Budget would raise the Inflation Reduction Act’s corporate minimum tax rate on billion-dollar corporations from 15 percent to 21 percent, ensuring the biggest corporations pay more of their fair share.”

Five Questions for MAGA Republicans As They Continue Undermining Access to IVF

Tomorrow, in an effort to protect access to in vitro fertilization for families across America against attacks by MAGA Republicans, Senate Democrats will bring the Right to IVF Act to the floor for a vote. In the two years since Donald Trump’s handpicked Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade, MAGA Republicans have continued to push their extreme anti-choice agenda and are now threatening access to IVF, a medical procedure that has helped millions of Americans start and grow their families. Anti-choice MAGA Republicans are relentless in their crusade against women’s access to reproductive care – and Trump has made clear that he will double down on these attacks if he retakes power. But President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats up and down the ballot will continue to defend reproductive freedom, including IVF.

1. Seventy percent of Americans believe access to IVF is a good thing. Will you continue to push an out-of-touch agenda that ignores your constituents who want more reproductive freedoms, not less?

ABC News: “Americans continue to support IVF and abortion access”

“The vast majority of registered voters, 80 percent, think IVF should be legal.

Navigator Research: “Large majorities say reproductive care like birth control pills and IVF should be made easier to access, including majorities of Republicans. … Americans across party lines also say access to fertility planning like IVF should be easier to access, including 72 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents, and 53 percent of Republicans.”

2. Do you believe every American should have the freedom to start and grow their family when and how they choose?

Trump’s Project 2025 cronies want to restrict access to IVF.

Politico: “Anti-abortion advocates worked for five decades to topple Roe v. Wade. They’re now laying the groundwork for a yearslong fight to curb in vitro fertilization. Since the Alabama Supreme Court ruled last month that frozen embryos are children, the Heritage Foundation and other conservative groups have been strategizing how to convince not just GOP officials but evangelicals broadly that they should have serious moral concerns about fertility treatments like IVF and that access to them should be curtailed.”

“They plan to appeal to evangelical denominations and their leaders to take a firm stance that IVF as practiced in the U.S. destroys human life. That, they hope, will reshape how conservative Christians — and in turn, the officials they elect — view the issue, just as it did on abortion. Ultimately, it could lead to laws that create a patchwork of IVF access in the United States, where the procedure is more accessible in liberal states and more limited in conservative ones.”

3.2. Would you let Donald Trump and his anti-IVF cronies set the extreme MAGA agenda?

TIME: “Roger Severino, a prominent attorney for the Christian right, led the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights during the Trump administration. In 2017, The Atlantic called him ‘the man behind Trump’s religious-freedom agenda for health care.’”

“Severino calls for HHS to prohibit women’s health facilities that receive Title X funding from distributing condoms. And by declaring that life begins at conception, his manifesto appears to commit HHS to finding ways to outlaw IVF, which relies on generating multiple embryos, most of which are not implanted. It could also eliminate birth control methods like the IUD and even some forms of the pill.”

HuffPost: “Donald Trump Has Deep Ties To Anti-IVF Movement”

“While in the White House, Trump and his administration praised, appointed and worked with some of the nation’s most extreme thought leaders who believe the IVF process is akin to murder. Trump hosted the Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the IVF ruling twice: once during his 2016 campaign and in 2018 at the White House. (This is the same chief justice who recently appeared on a QAnon conspiracist’s show.)”

4.3. Donald Trump never stops bragging about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade — which has paved the way for devastating abortion bans and attacks on everything from medication abortion to IVF across the country. How much longer will you enable these attacks?

CNN: “How the reversal of Roe v. Wade led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children”

New York Times: “[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump’s appointment of three justices.”

Politico: Louisiana is set to make possessing abortion pills without a prescription punishable by up to 10 years in prison

5.4. Do you support extreme anti-abortion legislation that could rip away IVF access from Americans who want to start a family nationwide?

Politico: At the same time that they are professing support for IVF, dozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.”

Matthew Yglesias, Bloomberg: “In case anyone is still covering the IVF question, today’s new Republican Study Committee budget specifically endorses the idea that embryos have the full legal rights of persons under the 14th Amendment.”

Associated Press: “Republicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments”

Business Insider: “Most House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are ‘unborn children.’

“This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which states that the term ‘human being’ includes ‘all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.’

“The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.”

NBC News: “But with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF, reproductive rights advocates say.”

5. 70% of Americans believe access to IVF is a good thing.

Voters Turn Out Against MAGA Republicans As Democrats Continue to Overperform In Special Elections

Last night’s special election in Ohio shows Republicans everywhere are on shaky ground with voters

Continuing trends of Democrats’ overperformance in special elections, voters in Ohio sent Donald Trump’s MAGA Republicans a strong message last night. In Ohio’s 6th district special election, Democratic candidate Michael Kripchak overperformed by about 20 points, a stunning achievement that made a nail-biter out of what was projected to be an easy win for Republican Michael Rulli. In a district that went for Trump by 29 points, and where Rulli had the financial advantage, voters were once again motivated to reject Trump’s MAGA Republican Party.

Following Democrats’ continued overperformance in electoral contests, DNC spokesperson Maddy Mundy released the following statement:

“Republicans may have been surprised by their underperformance in Ohio last night, but we weren’t. The best indicator of how voters are feeling heading into November is how they are actually voting at the ballot box, and for the past three years, in special elections across the country, voters have turned out to support Joe Biden and Democrats’ winning platform of safeguarding Americans’ freedoms against MAGA extremism. In 2024, voters continue to prove they understand the dangerous stakes of enabling Trump’s MAGA Republican Party. Come November, Americans across the country will turn out to reject the ultimate MAGA candidate: Donald Trump.”

Democrats have won crucial special elections this year as they offer voters a positive and powerful alternative to Trump’s extreme abortion bans and hate-fueled vision for this country. In addition to last night’s performance in Ohio, Democrats have racked up victories early this year in:

  • Michigan: In April, Michigan voters preserved Democrats’ trifecta in the state after electing Democrats Mai Xiong and Peter Herzberg, who ran campaigns focused on pocketbook issues and reproductive rights. In Herzberg’s case, his support for reproductive freedoms was in contrast to Republican opposition to abortion without exceptions
  • Alabama: In March, Democrat Marilyn Lands flipped a district that Trump won in an Alabama state House seat long held by Republicans. Lands centered her campaign on protecting access to reproductive care like abortion and in vitro fertilization in the wake of Trump and MAGA Republicans’ attacks.
  • New Hampshire: Democrats Jennifer Mandelbaum and Erik Johnson won two special elections for seats in the New Hampshire state House.
  • New York: In a hotly contested special election in New York’s Third Congressional District, Democrat Tom Suozzi flipped the Republican-held seat in part by attacking his opponent’s anti-abortion views.
  • Pennsylvania: PA Dems cemented their House majority in a February special election when Democrat Jim Prokopiak won his battleground district in swingy Bucks County by championing reproductive rights.

The results of Ohio 6th’s special election secured one of the strongest electoral swings towards Democrats this cycle, within a series of strong Democratic performances in special elections:

Washington Post: “Democrats’ surprisingly close Ohio election loss, in context”

“High on that list is how Democrats have done in special elections. A case in point: Tuesday’s sleepy special in Ohio’s 6th District.

“While virtually nobody paid attention to the race, unheralded and underfunded Democrat Michael Kripchak was losing by less than 10 points in a district that Biden lost in 2020 by 29 points. For a time Tuesday night, it appeared as though it could have been even closer…

“Democrats have over-performed in special elections throughout the 2023-2024 election cycle, but this House race was one of the biggest swings to date.”

Newsweek:Ohio Election Shock as Republican District Shifts 20 Points to Democrats”

The Hill: “GOP averts disaster in Ohio shocker: 5 takeaways from Tuesday’s primaries”

“Even though it didn’t result in a surprise upset, Democrats have reason to be heartened by the results. It’s the latest special election in which the party has performed well — the last example was Rep. Tom Suozzi’s (D-N.Y.) comfortable victory in the February special election to fill the remainder of ex-Rep. George Santos’s (R-N.Y.) term.”

REMINDER: Trump’s MAGA Cronies Sided with Big Pharma Over Seniors When They Voted to Block Cap on Insulin Costs, While Biden, Dems Are Lowering Prescription Drug Costs

This week, the Biden-Harris campaign launched Seniors for Biden-Harris, a new program to engage and mobilize senior voters across the country to reelect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Meanwhile, over the weekend, Donald Trump tried his best to take credit for a landmark win for President Biden’s agenda: capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare. Trump is lying once again: His MAGA minions in Congress voted against President Biden’s historic legislation containing the price cap that is lowering costs for seniors across the country. What’s even more shameless? Trump has railed against the legislation that made it possible.

As Team Biden-Harris launches Seniors for Biden-Harris, DNC National Press Secretary Emilia Rowland released the following statement on the threat Trump poses to seniors:

“Donald Trump is leading his MAGA cronies – who voted against capping the once-exorbitant cost of insulin for seniors – in siding with big corporations over working people. Now that American seniors are benefitting from the insulin price cap that President Biden’s historic Inflation Reduction Act made possible, Donald Trump is lying through his teeth, trying to take credit for the popular policy win. Seniors know that President Biden is why millions of Americans are saving hundreds of dollars per year on health care costs. Not only is Trump taking credit for lowered insulin costs, but his allies in the House have also proposed repealing the very law that capped the price for seniors. President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates on the presidential ballot this year who will protect seniors from greedy corporations looking to make a buck off their backs.”

The Republican senators and representatives in battleground states during the 117th Congress voted to block legislation that capped the cost of insulin at $35/month for seniors on Medicare:

Arizona

  • All FOUR Arizona House Republicans, including Reps. Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, Debbie Lesko, and David Schweikert voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Georgia

  • All EIGHT Georgia House Republicans, including Reps. Buddy Carter, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jody Hice, Andrew Clyde, Drew Ferguson, Barry Loudermilk, Rick Allen, and Austin Scott, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Nevada

  • The ONLY House Republican from Nevada, Rep. Mark Amodei, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

North Carolina

  • BOTH Republican senators from North Carolina, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.
  • All EIGHT North Carolina House Republicans, including Representatives Dan Bishop, Virginia Foxx, David Rouzer, Madison Cawthorne, Ted Budd, Patrick McHenry, and Greg Murphy, and Richard Hudson voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Michigan

  • All SEVEN Michigan House Republicans, including Reps. Jack Bergman, Bill Huizenga, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar, Fred Upton, Peter Meijer, and Tim Walberg, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Wisconsin

  • The ONLY Republican Senator from Wisconsin, Ron Johnson, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.
  • All FOUR Wisconsin House Republicans who voted on final IRA passage, Reps. Scott Fitzgerald, Glenn Grothman, Bryan Steil, and Tom Tiffany, voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Pennsylvania

  • All NINE House Republicans from Pennsylvania, including Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, John Joyce, Mike Kelly, Dan Meuser, Scott Perry, Guy Reschenthaler, Lloyd Smucker, Glenn Thompson, and Fred Keller voted to block the $35/month cap on insulin.

Now, Trump is trying to take credit for President Biden’s win after his party voted to tank it, and GOP senators went out of their way to strip out a provision from the Inflation Reduction Act that also would have capped the cost of insulin at $35 a month for Americans on private insurance.

NBC: “Republicans block cap on insulin costs for many Americans from Democratic deal”

CBS:Senate Republicans block $35 cap on price of insulin from Democratic bill”

Guardian: “Republicans vote against insulin bill as price soars, dismaying diabetics”

What’s worse, Trump’s allies in the House Republican Study Committee have proposed repealing the law that caps insulin costs. Meanwhile, President Biden is going to bat for seniors.

KFF: “The House Republican Study Committee proposed a full repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act in its FY2025 budget proposal.”

White House Fact Sheet: “As part of President Biden’s historic Inflation Reduction Act, nearly four million seniors on Medicare with diabetes started to see their insulin costs capped at $35 per month this past January, saving some seniors hundreds of dollars for a month’s supply. But in his State of the Union, President Biden made clear that this life-saving benefit should apply to everyone, not just Medicare beneficiaries.”

DNC Statement on the 8th Anniversary of Pulse Nightclub Shooting

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and LGBTQ Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes issued the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting:

“Eight years ago today, we witnessed the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ+ community in American history. Forty-nine innocent lives, some as young as 19, were cut short in the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. This Pride month, as we celebrate love, equality, and inclusion, this anniversary reminds us of the work left to ensure all LGBTQ+ Americans can live their lives without fear of harassment, discrimination, and violence.

“In the years since this tragic attack, President Biden and Democrats in Congress have championed LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms while ensuring everyone can safely love who they love and be who they are. Under President Biden’s leadership, we passed the Respect For Marriage Act and expanded anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans in health care. Democrats also passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first significant piece of federal gun safety legislation in three decades, which strengthened background check requirements, narrowed the “boyfriend loophole,” and made significant investments in mental health.

“Despite decades of senseless gun violence, MAGA Republicans continue to follow Trump’s lead, bow down to the NRA, and block meaningful action that could help prevent another tragedy. Rather than pass common sense gun reform, extreme Republicans would rather put their energy into passing anti-LGBTQ+ laws and erasing LGTBQ+ history. Enough is enough. It’s time for MAGA Republicans to come to the table and protect the lives of all Americans, regardless of gender and sexuality, from hateful acts of violence. This November, the choice is clear. There is only one candidate who will fight for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ Americans and fight to end gun violence — and that is President Joe Biden.”

Latino Seniors Are Benefitting Significantly from President Biden and Vice President Harris’ Agenda to Protect and Enhance Their Benefits

As President Biden and Vice President Harris continue to deliver historic progress in reducing costs and expanding access to health care, Trump is threatening to terminate the Affordable Care Act, cut Medicare and Social Security, and put the health care coverage of 4.3 million Latinos at risk, including Latino seniors. For Latino communities who already face health care disparities, this isn’t just about politics — it’s about our livelihoods and that of our families.

Latino seniors deserve a president who fights for them, and President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading the charge in this fight. Another Trump term means millions of Latinos and working families would lose their health insurance, while health care costs and the cost of prescription drugs would shoot through the roof, putting his Big Pharma donors ahead of American seniors.

Meanwhile, President Biden is fighting for us, protecting essential benefits such as Social Security and Medicare, capping insulin at $35/month, and more. When it comes to taking action, President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only ones fighting for the dignity of our seniors and protecting their hard-earned benefits.

President Biden has vowed to protect Social Security for America’s seniors, which includes over 4.6 million Latino seniors. Meanwhile, Trump and MAGA Republicans want to end Social Security as we know it.

Social Security Administration: “Hispanics benefit from the guaranteed benefit that is annually adjusted for inflation. With longer life expectancies, Hispanics will live more years in retirement and benefit from Social Security’s cost-of-living protections.

“In 2021, the average annual Social Security income received by Hispanic men 65 years and older was $14,579, compared to $11,628 for Hispanic women.”

Vox: “Trump just opened the door to Social Security cuts. Take him seriously.”

CNN: “Trump suggests he’s open to cuts to Medicare and Social Security after attacking primary rivals over the issue”

Vox: “Trump said he wouldn’t cut Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. His 2020 budget cuts all 3.”

Trump’s FY18, FY19, FY20, and FY21 budgets each proposed billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security programs.

2019 and 2020: Trump proposed budgets that included hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare.

And Trump and his extreme MAGA minions also want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, ripping away its life-saving provisions such as capping seniors’ out-of-pocket costs for insulin at $35 per month – a provision that’s critical for Latinos who suffer from diabetes at a disproportionate rate.

Axios: “Failure to include a monthly $35 insulin cap in the climate and health care bill that passed the Senate last weekend could especially affect Latinos.

The big picture: CDC data shows Latinos are 70% more likely than their white non-Hispanic peers to be diagnosed with diabetes.”

Kaiser Family Foundation: “The Inflation Reduction Act limits monthly cost sharing for insulin products to no more than $35 for Medicare beneficiaries.”

Axios: “RSC budget revives conservative health priorities”

“The Republican Study Committee today laid out a budget proposal that suggests a health policy blueprint if the GOP controls the White House and at least one chamber of Congress next year.

“The health care section… calls for killing the Inflation Reduction Act and its drug price provisions. … It would remove many of the Affordable Care Act’s protections for pre-existing conditions.”

The Hill: “The [Inflation Reduction Act] has been in Republicans’ crosshairs ever since it passed. If they win the White House and both chambers of Congress in the upcoming election, they’re likely to aim for at least a partial repeal.”

President Biden is expanding and protecting the life-changing Affordable Care Act, which led to more than 15 million Latinos gaining health insurance. Before the ACA more than 4-in-10 Latinos were uninsured. Now, more than three-quarters of Latinos have health coverage.

CBS News: “Data shows that prior to the 2013 implementation of the Medicaid expansion — a provision of the ACA that made more families eligible for Medicaid coverage — 40.2% of the Hispanic population, 24.4% of the Black population, and 14.5% of the White population were uninsured in America. However, by 2021, those numbers dropped significantly to 24.5%, 13.5%, and 8.2%, respectively.”

NBC News: “Hispanics have the highest rate of people without health insurance coverage and saw the largest drop in people without insurance under Obamacare.”

KFF: “Since implementation of the major ACA health coverage expansions in 2014, people of color have experienced large coverage gains that

helped narrow the longstanding racial and ethnic disparities in coverage. These gains reflected increases in both Medicaid and private coverage. Hispanics experienced the largest coverage gain.”

CNN: “Obamacare sign-ups hit record 21.3 million as Biden pushes his efforts to lower health care costs”

“Nearly 5 million more people signed up for Obamacare policies for this year compared with last year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which oversees the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, said Wednesday. Notably, about a quarter of people selecting plans were new consumers.”

The Hill: “Biden touts Affordable Care Act enrollment spike”

“The White House is reporting strong enrollment numbers through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) one week after enrollment began, with 300,000 new customers signing up for plans already.”

Washington Post: “ACA linked to reduced racial disparities, earlier diagnosis and treatment in cancer care”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even though it would be devastating for millions of Latino families.

Trump: “The cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it’s not good Healthcare. I’m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican Senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. It was a low point for the Republican Party, but we should never give up!”

Thanks to the ACA, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people with preexisting conditions, and 6.1 million Latinos gained access to preventative care services without added out-of-pocket costs.

Dept. of Health and Human Services: “The law requires insurers to cover HIV screening without cost-sharing for individuals at high risk of infection. This is important for Hispanics/Latinos, who represent 20 percent of the total estimated number of HIV diagnoses among adults and adolescents. An estimated 6.1 million Latino Americans with private insurance currently have access to expanded preventive services with no cost-sharing because of the Affordable Care Act.

Kaiser Health News: “Following the ACA’s enactment in 2010 through 2016, coverage increased across all racial/ethnic groups, with the largest increases occurring after implementation of the Medicaid and Marketplace coverage expansions in 2014. Nonelderly Hispanic people had the largest percentage point increase in coverage, with their uninsured rate falling from 32.6% to 19.1%.”

Dept. of Health and Human Services: “Under the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies can’t refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a ‘pre-existing condition’ — that is, a health problem you had before the date that new health coverage starts. They also can’t charge women more than men.”

President Biden is strengthening Medicare and Medicaid, while Donald Trump is trying to gut these programs.

New York Times: “U.S. Labor Market Strength Steadied Social Security and Medicare Funds”

President Biden and Vice President Harris Are Restoring and Expanding Black Seniors’ Benefits

President Biden and Vice President Harris are delivering on their promises to America’s seniors, including Black seniors. The Biden-Harris administration is protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare benefits and successfully passed the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which capped insulin costs at $35 a month for seniors, drastically lowering prices for the third of Black Medicare beneficiaries who are affected by diabetes.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump tried to cut funding for Social Security and Medicare every year he was in office and plans to take away Black seniors’ health care if given another term. President Trump has made it clear he doesn’t care about America’s seniors  — President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates fighting to maintain the retirement benefits that Black Americans have earned and deserve.

The Biden-Harris administration has repeatedly stood up to Trump and his extreme MAGA allies who want to cut funding to Social Security and Medicare.

AARP: “‘If anyone here tries to cut Social Security or Medicare or raise the retirement age I will stop them,’ Biden said. ‘I will protect and strengthen Social Security and make the wealthy pay their fair share.’”

Social Security Administration: “African Americans receiving benefits are helped by Social Security’s cost-of-living protection which guarantees a benefit that is annually adjusted for inflation.”

The Guardian: “Joe Biden swiftly seized on Donald Trump’s suggestion that he would cut ‘entitlements’ like social security and Medicare if re-elected, saying: ‘Not on my watch.’”

Washington Post: “President Trump pledged on Saturday to pursue a permanent cut to the payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare if he wins reelection in November, a hard-to-accomplish political gambit that some experts see as a major headache for the future of the country’s entitlement programs.”

Mediaite: “During a Fox News town hall, President Donald Trump promised to cut entitlements like Medicare and Social Security if were to win a second term. … ‘But if you don’t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,’ town hall co-moderator Martha MacCallum interjected, alluding to social safety programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. ‘Oh, we’ll be cutting,’ Trump rushed to confirm.”

While Trump is vowing to rip away Black seniors’ health care if reelected, President Biden is strengthening and protecting the Affordable Care Act, which has significantly reduced racial disparities in health care among Black Americans.

CNN: “Obamacare sign-ups hit record 21.3 million as Biden pushes his efforts to lower health care costs”

Washington Post: “ACA linked to reduced racial disparities, earlier diagnosis and treatment in cancer care”

AARP: “ACA Has Led to More African Americans Getting Health Insurance”

The number of Black Americans under age 65 without health insurance has dropped by 40 percent since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

“In 2011 about 7.1 million African Americans lacked coverage, but by 2019 that number had dropped to 4.4 million, according to the report by researchers in HHS’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE).”

TheGrio: “Trump ‘coming for’ Black America’s health care with Obamacare vow”

“Former President Donald Trump is vowing yet again to repeal the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, which would have devastating impacts on Black communities and their access to affordable and quality health insurance.”

“On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump, the leading 2024 Republican presidential candidate, wrote that he is ‘seriously looking at alternatives’ to Obamacare, which he argued is too costly.”

CNN:Obamacare has gotten popular. Trump doesn’t care”

President Biden delivered on his promise to cap insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare, drastically lowering prices for the roughly 38% of Black Medicare beneficiaries who take insulin to manage their diabetes.

The Root: “Here’s How Biden’s Inflation Act Helps Black Americans With Diabetes”

“Over five million Black Americans live with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Roughly 19 percent of all African Americans in the United States over 20 years old have diabetes, compared to just 7 percent of all white Americans.

“This could be a huge improvement for many Black Medicare recipients who receive drug coverage and also take insulin. As of 2011, roughly 38 percent of Black Medicare beneficiaries had diabetes, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. And nearly a third of Black Medicare beneficiaries reported health care cost-related problems in 2018.”

CNN: “More Americans can now get insulin for $35”

“Congress, the White House and new players in the market have increased pressure on insulin manufacturers to lower their prices. Eli Lilly and Sanofi announced that they would institute $35 caps shortly after President Joe Biden called on drugmakers to do so in his State of the Union address last year.”

AARP: “The new prescription drug law allows Medicare for the first time ever to negotiate the prices of some high-cost drugs, starting with 10 medications whose prices are being negotiated this year. Biden called on Congress to next allow Medicare to more than double the number of high-cost prescriptions drugs whose prices the government can negotiate each year.  ‘It’s time to go further and give Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for 500 drugs over the next decade,’ he said.”

President Biden is making sure Black seniors have the opportunity to remain in their homes as they age, allowing them to retire with dignity and respect.

Federal Housing Administration: “Similarly, FHA remained the

leader by share for mortgages supporting wealth-building for Black and Hispanic borrowers. Lastly, almost 33,000 senior homeowners were able to age with stability and security in their own homes in fiscal year 2023 thanks to FHA’s Home Equity Conversion Mortgage programs.”
